Intro: Comedies involving a central pair of main characters usually have one thing in common; their premise is generally very simple. Take 1994’s Dumb and Dumber, for example. The Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels all-time classic comedy, in which two hapless, hopeless losers attempt to return a suitcase full of cash to its rightful owner, thrives on how simple both the plot and the two main characters are. The Farrellys had an amazing knack in the 1990s for delivering comedies that were hilarious because they had a simple idea for the plot, plus they weren’t worried about upsetting anybody with outrageous sequences. Those were the days. You couldn’t produce mainstream comedies such as Me, Myself and Irene, Kingpin or There’s Something About Mary nowadays, for fear of upsetting someone.

John Carpenter's 1986 action-comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is an odd duck. The plot involves an ancient wizard named Lo Pan (James Hong) who aims to kidnap, marry, and then sacrifice a green-eyed woman to break a curse he is under. The woman in question is Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), the fiancée of Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), who, fortunately, knows a little bit about evil wizards and ancient Chinese warriors. It will be up to Wang to rescue Miao Yin from Lo Pan. Also kidnapped is the green-eyed Gracie (Kim Cattrall), beloved by the dumb-as-rocks blowhard Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), essentially Wang's sidekick.

Arnold Schwarzenegger made a whole slew of classic 80s action movies. Still, one remains totally obscure despite being released smack dab in the middle of his amazing The Terminator to Predator run of movies from 1984-87. That film in 1986’s Raw Deal. A formulaic 80s action flick, it’s the most modestly mounted Schwarzenegger action epic of the era, with Arnie coerced into starring in it to complete a long-standing contract he had with producer Dino De Laurentiis following Conan The Barbarian.

In it, Schwarzenegger is somewhat unconvincingly cast as a small-town sheriff named Kaminski, who used to be an FBI agent but was forced out of the bureau after roughing up a suspect. He’s recruited by his old mentor (The Night Stalker’s legendary Darren McGavin) whose son was killed by the Chicago mob. He wants Kaminski to go undercover in the mob and tear them apart from the inside.

It’s been 36 years since Die Hard hit the theatres and became a memorable action movie that still remains relatable in the entertainment industry. Providing a watershed genre moment, while building up the careers of Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, Die Hard also featured often forgotten actors like Robert Davi.

Gary DeVore, the screenwriter of movies including Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Raw Deal and Back Roads, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field, went missing in June 1997, sparking a major manhunt.

DeVore’s mysterious disappearance has never been truly solved and there have been a number of conspiracy theories surrounding the subject including one that the CIA may have played a role in whatever happened to him.

When director Ben Affleck first approached William Goldenberg, his Oscar-winning go-to editor (“Argo”), to cut “Air,” the sports biopic about Nike’s revolutionary Air Jordan basketball shoe line, it was only a couple of months before shooting began. Yet Goldenberg had to wait a month before reading the script while Alex Convery finished his rewrite.

It was a tight turnaround, but it led to a fast and loose production that perfectly fit the film’s recreation of the scrappy, underdog culture at Oregon-based Nike in 1984, which was then on the verge of bankruptcy.

Marsha Hunt, an actress most known for her roles in films like “Pride and Prejudice” and “Raw Deal,” died from natural causes at the age of 104 on September 7. She died in her Sherman Oaks home in Los Angeles that she had lived in since 1946.

Hunt starred in more than 60 films for Paramount, MGM, Republic and other studios and appeared in more than 30 stage productions.

Her caregivers, her nephew, actor-director Allan Hunt and Elizabeth Lauritsen, her devoted friend and executive manager were with her in her home.

Filmmaker and documentarian Roger C. Memos announced Hunt’s death, having directed a documentary about the late actress in 2015 called “Marsha Hunt’s Sweet Adversity.” Outside of her film roles, which she appeared in more than 50 of them in a 14-year period between 1935 and 1949, her career had been greatly defined by the blacklisting she faced from Hollywood executives for protesting the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Old Hollywood actor and activist Marsha Hunt has died at the age of 104.

She died Wednesday of natural causes at her Sherman Oaks home, where she had lived since 1946, Roger C. Memos — writer-director of the documentary Marsha Hunt’s Sweet Adversity — told The Hollywood Reporter.

Hunt also appeared opposite Mickey Rooney in the best picture Oscar nominee The Human Comedy (1943) during a period in which she was known as “Hollywood’s Youngest Character Actress.”

A former model who signed with Paramount Pictures at age 17, the Chicago native made her first big splash as a suicidal co-ed opposite Lana Turner in MGM’s These Glamour Girls (1939).

It was announced today that acclaimed horror author Peter Straub passed away, an undeniable creative force who completely changed what was possible in the landscape of dark fantasy and horror fiction. Straub wrote with such beautiful world-building detail and rich prose that he often elevated the simplest concepts into full-fledged epics, which is precisely why the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King, collaborated with him on their collaborative masterpiece, "The Talisman."

While King has been the most adapted author of the modern era, Straub has only had two novels brought to life. In 1977, "The Haunting of Julia" was released inspired by his novel "Julia," but the film that should have had studios vying to gain the rights to any and all of Straub's works came in 1981 when Universal adapted his haunting novel "Ghost Story."

Straub published the novel in 1979, which became a national bestseller and helped cement Straub as one of the horror fiction greats.

The inaugural London Action Festival had its opening night at the Royal Geographical Society (Rgs) on Thursday 28th July. The evening featured a screening of Die Hard (celebrating its 35th birthday) followed by an in-person interview with its director John McTiernan, and live music from actor/Die Hard co-star Robert Davi, who is also a professionally trained opera/jazz singer.

Davi performed four songs with his band, including Frank Sinatra’s That’s Life and You Make Me Feel So Young followed by Roger Miller’s King of the Road, before finishing with festive belter Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

After rousing the crowd, Davi was interviewed by film journalist Ian Nathan, during which he reminisced about his early acting days; appearing in his first film, Contract on Cherry Street (1977), with Frank Sinatra, and relocating to Florida after 45 years in LA.

Exclusive: Finnish filmmaker Hanna Bergholm, whose latest body-horror coming of age movie, Hatching, made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, has inked with CAA.

The pic debuted in the fest’s midnight section to critical acclaim and will be released by IFC Midnight on April 29.

Bergholm previously directed the internationally-awarded short films Varjot and Gorilla, as well as the television drama series A Reetta Ja Ronja. Her latest short horror film, Puppet Master, screened at several international film festivals, including Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, Fantastic Fest in Austin, and the MoMA Museum of Modern Art New York.

Martha De Laurentiis, a producer with more than forty years of experience in the entertainment industry and wife of the late Dino De Laurentiis, died on Saturday following a long battle with cancer. She was 67.

News of De Laurentiis’ death was shared on Instagram by television writer and producer Bryan Fuller. Fuller developed and executive produced the NBC series “Hannibal,” an adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novels which featured Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. De Laurentiis was an executive producer on the series.

“What an amazing lady. Martha De Laurentiis left us yesterday peacefully with her family at her side,” Fuller wrote. “Long live Martha and her brilliant legacy.”

The impact that Rob Halford and his band Judas Priest have had on heavy metal is immeasurable. His black-leather outfits gave the genre its trademark look, his pitch-perfect vocals gave it some drama, and his penchant for riding motorcycle onstage gave it some larger-than-life flair. When Halford came out as gay in 1998, the self-proclaimed Metal God broadened his role-model status to appeal to metalheads looking to break out of the closet.

The singer has now recounted the highs and lows of his life story in his newly released memoir, Confess.

“Docu-noir At Its Finest”

A sub-genre of film noir is that of the so-called “docu-noir,” a crime drama usually based on a true story and told as a Dragnet-style procedural. Most likely there is an omniscient voiceover narrator, a focus on the lawmen who are investigating the case, and all the other stylistic and thematic elements associated with film noir in general: starkly contrasting black and white photography, urban locations, shadows, gritty realism, angst and cynicism, and sometimes brutal violence.

Eagle-Lion Films was a British/American production company that existed for only a few years in the late 40s, disbanding in the early 50s. There was some talent involved, and they produced a variety of genres and pictures of varying quality (Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes was a rare Best Picture nominee). “I’ll be back” is the signature line of the Terminator movie franchise, with either the catchphrase itself or a variation on it being said in all six films in the series to date. It’s such an iconic line, though, that it’s actually spread out into other movies totally unrelated to the James Cameron sci-fi saga. Well, apart from one thing: they all star Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Once upon a time, MGM launched a big spectacle Western remake with the top star Glenn Ford and the bright import Maria Schell — and then second-guessed the whole production, cutting back on everything so severely that director Anthony Mann ankled the set for Spain and El Cid. The storytelling is a mess — after starting big, the show soon falls into pieces. But many of individual scenes and set pieces are exemplary, especially Mann’s re-run of the Oklahoma Land Rush, staged in Arizona and augmented by classy special effects. The large cast rounds up some big talent — Mercedes McCambridge, Russ Tamblyn — to tell Edna Ferber’s multi-generational story about ambition, intolerance and dreams of glory on the frontier.

One of the most surprising things about director Roger Christian’s 1982 chiller The Sender, which screams America from almost every fibre, is that it’s British made. With a cast and crew of varied nationality and narratively set in America – location work took place in Georgia – all the studio work for the Paramount Pictures production was actually shot on stages at Shepperton in the UK.

British born Christian himself was a former Academy Award winning art director on the first Star Wars (and a nominee in the same category for Alien). On the other end of the ‘accomplishments to be proud of’ scale, however, he’s the man responsible for the woeful Battlefield Earth, so it’s fair to say his cinematic career was mixed. The Sender, his debut in the director’s chair, resides on the upper end of that scale.

When any of us recall our favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, we tend to bring up his more iconic offerings from the 1980’s and early 1990’s. Although Raw Deal will likely continue to be criminally overlooked, the likes of The Terminator, Commando and Total Recall are often among the most fondly remembered. But, if you repeatedly find yourself in a situation that requires you get to the chopper with haste, then Predator is probably the action flick for you.

That being said, we’re all aware that whenever a beloved franchise is revived on the big screen these days, it’s not uncommon for the filmmakers to try to lure familiar actors from the originals back, be it in a large role or a mere cameo. As such, Schwarzenegger has been brought up in conversation many times already in regards to the next Predator film. Unfortunately, however, everything we’ve heard...

Dennis O’Keefe, Claire Trevor and Marsha Hunt spin an excellent crime-love-murder triangle, for a road picture that’s one of the best Noirs not made by a big studio. Director Anthony Mann and cinematographer John Alton dial up the intensity for an experience as rich as the best pulp crime fiction.

Armory Films, Union Entertainment Group and Pegasus Pictures announced today that Mads Mikkelsen (Dr. Strange, Star Wars, The Hunt) is starring in the survival thriller Arctic, directed by Joe Penna. Co-written by Penna and Ryan Morrison, the film is being produced by Chris Lemole and Tim Zajaros of Armory Films and Noah C Haeussner of Union, and is being executive produced by Martha De Laurentiis, Einar Thorsteinsson and Cassian Elwes. The film also marks the first re-teaming of Mikkelsen and De Laurentiis since NBC’s “Hannibal.” Production is currently underway, with Xyz Films handling international sales.

The story surrounds a man (Mikkelsen) stranded in the Arctic, who is finally about to receive his long awaited rescue. However, after a tragic accident, his opportunity is lost and he must then decide whether to remain in the relative safety of his camp or embark on a deadly trek through the unknown for potential salvation.

Gilberto Valle, the “cannibal cop” from New York City, reveals he still harbors dark sexual fantasies about killing and eating women.

In an interview with Inside Edition that aired Wednesday, Valle, 32, said he continues to visit fantasy websites, even after he was arrested in 2012 and convicted over the discovery of online messages where he discussed killing his wife, as well as kidnapping, killing and eating other women.

Valle’s conviction was later overturned.

The father-of-one tells Inside Edition he does “on occasion” visit the websites “because there’s nothing illegal, there’s nothing wrong with that. What I do at home is my business.

2011 saw the release of The Intouchables, a French film that followed an aristocrat who hires a young man from the projects to be his caregiver after he becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident.
