Exclusive: Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars) has signed on to star in My One and Only, a psychological thriller from writer-director Wayne Kramer (The Cooler) that’s being presented for worldwide sales at Cannes by Film Bridge International.

Set to go before cameras in July, the film centers on Molly (Hale), a recently widowed young woman, suicidal with grief, who is abducted by a man intent on reinventing her as his dead wife — unleashing in Molly a fierce will to live.

Siena Oberman (The Good Mother) will produce for Artemis along with Steven Schneider and David Guglielmo (The Last Stop in Yuma County) for Spooky Pictures. Greg Lauritano (Fairyland) is executive producing alongside Phil Hunt for Head Gear, as well as DC Cassidy, Udaya Sharma and Michael Fisk for Interstellar Entertainment.

“The Landscape and the Fury” by Switzerland’s Nicole Vögele took the Grand Jury Prize in the International Feature Film Competition at Swiss doc festival Visions du Réel on Friday.

Shot on the Bosnian-Croatian border, which is also the European Union border, the film unveils the struggle of refugees being chased away by police and navigating a terrain still contaminated with mines from the Bosnian War.

It marks a return to VdR for Vögele, who premiered her first short film “Mrs Loosli” at the fest in 2013. Her 2018 debut feature, “Closing,” won the Special Jury Prize for Filmmakers of the Present at Locarno.

Her win marks a hat-trick for Swiss documentaries after Peter Mettler picked up the top prize last year with “Where the Green Grass Grows” and Tizian Büchi won in 2022 with “L’Îlot.”

Cinephiles will have plenty to celebrate this April with the next slate of additions to the Criterion Channel. The boutique distributor, which recently announced its June 2024 Blu-ray releases, has unveiled its new streaming lineup highlighted by an eclectic mix of classic films and modern arthouse hits.

Students of Hollywood history will be treated to the “Peak Noir: 1950” collection, which features 17 noir films from the landmark film year from directors including Billy Wilder, Alfred Hitchcock, and John Huston.

Sometimes actors are cast in a movie together and instantly display great onscreen chemistry. You look at them and think, “These two should work together again. They make a good team.” Sometimes they do reunite and it leads to a series of great screen collaborations, but sometimes they don’t and we’re left wishing the pair would have made more films together.

Back in the days of the old ‘Studio System,’ movies studio execs would look for actors who had good on-screen chemistry and repeatedly cast them together in films. This was called “packaging”, and it lead to the frequent teaming of people like Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers; William Powell & Myrna Loy; Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall; Boris Karloff & Bela Lugosi; Bob Hope & Bing Crosby; Errol Flynn & Olivia de Havilland; Nelson Eddy & Jeannette MacDonald; etc., etc.

The ‘Studio System’ is long gone and so is “packaging”. It’s a pity...

The Universal Soldier films are a strange case of life imitating art. Much like how series protagonist Luc Deveraux is killed in action then resurrected into something post-human, Universal was a pretty standard 90s action film which crashed and burned when it came to sequels, but became something unique and beautiful when it was reanimated for the straight to DVD market.

It’s a hushed secret among genre fans, but Universal Solder 3 and 4 (or possibly 5 and 6, it’s complicated) are some of the most remarkable action sci-fi films of the 21st century so far. Yes, really. I actually watched the series backwards when I first saw them, after being blown away by Universal Solder Day Of Reckoning and deciding to work my way back, and Roland Emmerich’s perfectly acceptable 1992 blockbuster...

The name Peter Hyams may not be the mentioned in the same breath as contemporaries like Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner and Barry Levinson, but this somewhat underappreciated filmmaker is far from a journeyman. During his five decade career he has effortlessly jumping between genres, churning out some entertaining and understated work, his most fruitful period being the 1980’s which saw the likes of Outland, The Presidio, Running Scared and 2010, a brave (and pretty enjoyable) attempt at crafting a sequel from Stanley Kubrick’s seminal work, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Enemies Closer, his first film since the 2009 Michael Douglas-headlining Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, sees him reunited with aging action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme (their two previous films together, Sudden Death and Timecop, are arguably the highlight of the former martial artist’s career). Eve of Destruction is another one of these early nineties movies, that’s actually a leftover eighties movie in disguise. Scream Factory is almost specializing in this type of movie at this juncture. It’s actually pretty familiar to their Blu-ray release of I Come In Peace. It’s an obscure enough title that virtually no behind-the-scenes footage or any kind of footage that could use used as supplemental material for the disc is in existence, but the fact that it has been released to Blu-ray is an impressive enough accomplishment. I’m not going to sit here, like some would do, and exclaim that Eve of Destruction has always been my favorite movie. In fact, I think I had only seen it twice prior to my Blu-ray viewing. Back in the early days of HBO and Cinemax, of course. But, I did have fond memories of the times that I did see it.

A former writer on the small screen for MADtv and the critically adored Parks and Recreation, Katie Dippold’s first feature The Heat hits screens this week. Directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids), and starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, the buddy cop movie has already proved a big hit in the U.S., grossing $160million at the box office and prompting talk of a sequel almost immediately.

We sat down with Katie to ask her about what made her want to write a female-led buddy cop comedy, her experiences working with Paul Feig on the film, and a little bit about her previous experience on the small screen with Parks and Rec.

Were you always a fan of buddy cop movies?

Since then Ms. McCarthy’s kept busy doing a CBS sitcom named “Mike and Molly” (and has nabbed an Emmy) and last Winter she had an all too brief cameo in This Is 40 (you have to stick around for the end credits which included several unused takes that are a wonder of improvisation). But now we’re finally getting her in showcase movie lead roles (besides a very funny cameo in the otherwise dreary recent The Hangover III). Throughout his 30+-year career, character actor Steven Bauer has been associated with films like Scarface, Thief of Hearts, Running Scared, Gleaming the Cube (a personal favorite), Raising Cain, Primal Fear and Traffic to name a few as well as the hit 80's TV series "Wiseguy."

For his latest project Bauer decided to switch things up a bit and don a crazy fur cap and eye patch to fight werewolves in Universal Studios Home Entertainment's latest classic monster project, Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, which was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD everywhere.

To mark the occasion, Dread Central had the opportunity to briefly chat with Bauer about how his life-long fandom for the Universal Monsters led to his involvement with Werewolf as well as more on his experiences shooting in Transylvania and how one small eye patch caused so many problems on set.

Theater, film and dance stars came out last night to pay tribute to late tap- dancing actor Gregory Hines at Harlem, New York's Apollo Theater. Hines, a Tony Award winner, who died of cancer aged just 57 in August, starred on Broadway and in movies like Waiting To Exhale and Running Scared. Cosby Show actress Phylicia Rashad and Hines' older brother Maurice Hines co-hosted the tribute, which included performances by tap dancers and singers as well as video clips of Hines' performances. A range of artists including ballet superstar Mikhail Baryshnikov came out for the tribute. Fellow actress and dancer Debbie Allen said Hines' love of dance infused his entire body of work, explaining, "He took tap to a whole other level. It was a part of everything he did - his movies, his Broadway shows, his music." Isabella Rossellini, who played Hines' wife in the 1985 film White Nights, said, "He was a wonderful, funny man, humorous and warm. He didn't change on the set and off the set. There was an authenticity about him." Gregory Oliver Hines was born in New York City in 1946. When he was just six years old he and Maurice performed at the Apollo with their father in a family dance trio billed as Hines, Hines And Dad. Tony-award winning actor and dancer Gregory Hines, who wowed audiences onstage as well as in film and television, died Saturday in Los Angeles of cancer, according to his publicist, Allen Eichorn; Hines was 57.
