There's is no real plot, but a succession of mini-sketches , most of them excellent ,riotously funny , full of black humor, cynicism, irony ...a few are disposable ,but it is to the best moments any fair review must address; the absurdity of our world indeed!
An advertisement is filmed, during which a farmer is supposed to praise the virtues of a brand of dog food ;Jean Carmet is true to form.
Food ads are broadcast on TV ,and while a couple is having dinner, pictures of starving children are shown : much to viewer's surprise , the TV viewers are Claude Chabrol and his wife Stephane Audran ! Who appear again later ,when the far right wing takes over the government : "kitchen!" the director yells out ,as his wife is bringing a tray.
A desperate woman lies down on a rallroad track and waits for the train;but she has forgotten to consult the train times .....
A playboy leaves a blonde for a brunette ; the former' s revenge will be ruthless, using the NYC speaking time
A teacher is reading a pupil's essay : the boy tells about the death of his mother;but the man blames him for his grammar mistakes....
An one-eyed woman is ridiculed by everyone ;both her mother and she go to Lourdes ,expecting a miracle .....which happens in a very special way.....
Tens of persons disappear ,led by their dogs ; no explanation is found.
A woman dies in a car crash and tells the people who have attended the accident about the hereafter.
A journalist has the execution of a fallen African leader brought forward to get the scoop; the newspapers sing the praises of the young reporter who has tried to save the unfortunate condemned person.
And as if it were not enough,Christ is back on Earth.
And it's only a sample of about thirty short scenes , played by many famous French actors ; it's drastically different from the French cinema of the eighties; exactly the kind of movie you do not expect much from ,and which grabs you till the very end.
