Priscilla Barnes was set to play the sheriff, but Suzanne Somers replaced her just before production began. Barnes had replaced Somers in Three's Company (1976).
The original pilot, Cass Malloy (1982), was was shot at KTLA Studios (now Sunset Bronson Studios), produced by Lorimar Television Production, and aired on CBS in 1982. Annie Potts was originally cast in the title role, but left before production began. Caroline McWilliams replaced Potts. CBS ultimately passed on the show. When it was picked up for syndication in 1984, with a new title, Suzanne Somers was cast in the lead role. Lou Richards and George Wyner were the only two actors from the original pilot to be cast in the series.
