The universe of Minor Threats — actor and comedian Patton Oswalt and TV writer Jordan Blum’s cult hit comic book centered on the travails of underappreciated and overlooked D-list villains — continues to expand and has now attracted the attention of some A-list creators.
Matt Fraction, known for his Eisner Award-winning work on Marvel’s Hawkeye, and Miles Morales co-creator Brian Michael Bendis, along with award-winning artists Michael Allred and Gene Ha, are working on an anthology mini-series that is set in the Minor Threats universe and set to be published by Dark Horse Entertainment next year.
Writers Gail Simone and Gerry Duggan and artists Soo Lee and Mark Torres are also involved in the four-issue project that is titled Welcome to Twilight City and will feature a mix of new and established characters.

For the last two years, Dark Horse Comics has been delivering a brand-new comic book universe that shows a different side of superhero storytelling. The Minor Threats franchise has taken readers into a dangerous, experimental, and incredibly funny world that focuses less on the heroes and more on the underdogs.
Co-creators Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum have been working with a number of talented writers and artists to expand their universe with spin-offs such as The Alternates and the currently ongoing Barfly. With Minor Threats next spin-off, The Brood, just weeks away, Oswalt and Blum, along with writer Heath Corson and artist Ian Culbard sat down to discuss their project and what fans can expect.
Minor Threats first debuted 2 years ago, and its blossomed into a full universe with multiple volumes and spin-offs. Talk a little bit about how this world came together and how its evolved since the first volume.

Its always exciting to see Hollywood actors make major comebacks after a long time away from the spotlight. In some cases, actors have taken a step back intentionally, and in other instances, it's forced upon them due to a string of commercial failures, but no matter the circumstances, a career comeback reminds viewers what was great about the performer in the first place. Whether its silent-era starlets reviving their careers in the age of sound or modern movie stars overcoming personal problems to lead multi-billion dollar franchises, a Hollywood comeback represents the very best of Tinseltown.
Some of the best actors working today had major career setbacks that led to them shying away from the spotlight only to make a grand return several years later. Occasionally, these comebacks were so impressive that the actors gained widespread accolades and Academy Awards for their achievements. Witnessing a movie star reclaim their past...

Patton Oswalt’s Dark Horse comic book Minor Threats is heading to the small screen as a live action series for Netflix.
As well as acting, Patton Oswalt is well known as an award winning stand-up comedian, having released several specials and toured all over the world. He’s also built up an impressive CV in film and TV, from voicing Remy in Brad Bird’s wonderful Ratatouille and starring opposite Charlize Theron in Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman’s Young Adult, indie comedy I Love My Dad, to shows like A.P. Bio, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, season four of Veronica Mars and many, many more.
In 2022, Oswalt co-authored Minor Threats with Jordan Blum for Dark Horse Comics. It follows low-level supervillains who usually find themselves bound in front of a police station with a note saying, “Courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Batman.”
It subverted genre tropes by having the main villain,...

Minor Threats, the hit comic book co-created by actor and comedian Patton Oswalt and screenwriter Jordan Blum, is headed to television.
Netflix is developing the live-action adaptation, with Oswalt and Blum to serve as writers, showrunners and executive producers. Scott Hepburn, the artist who drew and co-created the title, will also exec produce. The project is described as being in the early stages of development, according to sources.
Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg will exec produce for Dark Horse Entertainment, the company that publishes the comic; Kasey Adler will oversee the project for the company. Dark Horse has a first-look deal with Netflix, which is home to the long-running adaptation of its comic book Umbrella Academy.
In fact, the development dovetails nicely with Umbrella, whose fourth and final season hits Aug. 8 and, like Minor Threats, offers a off-kilter take on superheroics.

Some MCU actors have made unusual demands before making their first appearances in the MCU. Marvel Studios has accommodated some of these requests, but others have been ignored, often benefiting the story or characters of the McU's projects. Mickey Rourke wanted a bird in Iron Man 2, Simu Liu didn't want to wear Air Jordans in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Samuel L. Jackson didn't want Nick Fury to run, and Jeremy Renner wanted to be killed off early, to name a few.
Some actors have made weird demands and requests when joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while Marvel Studios implemented some of them, things haven't always gone their way. Since the very beginning of the MCU in 2008's Iron Man, Marvel Studios has given roles to some of Hollywood's biggest stars, but some have had strange conditions for joining the superhero franchise. It’s a fine line between genius and madness, and an even thinner, barely visible gossamer thread that demarcates genius and being categorized as difficult. Faye Dunaway has been labeled both, though in a competition between those two descriptives, “difficult” often had a three-to-one lead. Most documentaries about legendary stars would sand off its subject’s rough edges and try to present the most hagiography-friendly version imaginable. Faye, much like the force of nature (note that we did not say maelstrom) at the center of this movie, takes a bumpier road less traveled.

New Biker Mice from Mars comic series to explore their origin story while maintaining the tone and style of the original '90s animated series. The cover art released ahead of the series' release hints at unadulterated, kid-friendly badassery with a nod to Akira. The series will delve into dark themes without going overly dark, staying true to the beloved zaniness of the classic Biker Mice from Mars.
Biker Mice from Mars is easily one of the most hardcore cartoons of the 90s era, even when compared to other shows of its kind like Street Sharks, Toxic Crusaders, and - of course - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And now, the iconic Throttle, Modo, and Vinnie are having their origin stories fully explored for the first time in the franchises history in an all-new Oni Press comic series, one that promises to stay true to the TV shows original tone and style.

Barfly miniseries from Dark Horse Comics introduces $#!%eater, a mutant fly from the Lower Lair bar. Cover art and teaser featuring punk song hints at $#!%eater using music to express his frustrations and drive his storyline. Patton Oswalt and other creators use punk rock to tell the story of how $#!%eater rises up in the Minor Threats universe.
The universe of Minor Threats is expanding into a glorious age of punk rock beauty with the upcoming miniseries, Barfly. The new series will center around a character fans of the Dark Horse Comics series will surely recognize, yet know almost nothing about: $#!%eater. The humanoid fly is quite literally a barfly that hangs out in the Lower Lair bar, but his story is far bigger than that - and now, its finally being told.

Cinephiles romanticize the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and most of the 1970s as a time of artistic rebellion during which a batch of young directors and experienced helmers saved Hollywood by connecting with Baby Boomer moviegoers bored with formula Westerns, backlot musicals, and all the other fusty stuff their parents dragged them to throughout their childhood. These artists toyed with genre conventions and film technique to reignite a jaded generation's excitement for the medium at a time when television was becoming an increasingly appealing entertainment option.
It was an incredibly exciting time for movies, but audiences of all ages still had an appetite for good ol' cinematic spectacle. They might've tired of sword-and-sandal epics and widescreen adaptations of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, but there was nothing wrong with studios spending loads of money to fill the big screen with eye-popping imagery.

With their comic Minor Threats, actor and comedian Patton Oswalt and TV writer Jordan Blum found unexpected success with their title focused on the travails of underappreciated and overlooked D-list villains.
Now, a background character in the comic that is about background villains is getting his moment in the spotlight.
From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly teams up the duo, who created Hulu’s stop-motion Marvel series M.O.D.O.K., with comics author Kyle Starks and artist Ryan Browne, the illustrator of indie hit Eight Billion Genies. It tells a coming-of-age story about an insect monster-man, seen previously as a silent but oh-so-cool-looking humanoid fly in a punk jacket in certain panels of the Threat comics. Now, he is searching for his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City. Dark Horse Comics is publishing the four-issue mini-series starting in July.

The list of directors who put their trust in Robby Müller could constitute a nice history of post-war cinema. A retrospective of films on which he served as Dp reflects accordingly––so’s the case with Metrograph’s “Robby Müller: Remain in Light,” which starts on Friday, September 29, and for which we’re glad to debut the trailer.
Contained therein are bits and pieces of what Metrograph attendees can anticipate. The series will offer a chance to see (among others) 24 Hour Party People, Alice in the Cities, The American Friend, Barfly, Breaking the Waves, Dead Man, Down by Law, Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, Kings of the Road, Korczak, Living the Light – Robby Müller, Mystery Train, Repo Man, Saint Jack, To Live and Die in L.A., When Pigs Fly, The Wrong Move, and Paris, Texas. Surprise! Legendary director Barbet Schroeder, in Locarno to introduce his latest doc “Ricardo and Painting,” was greeted with a Special Tribute Award before the screening.
“Is this for the film?” Shroeder, a modest man, asked on stage. “No,” said Locarno festival director Giona Nazzaro. “It’s for being Barbet Schroeder.”
Despite focusing on harsher subjects in his previous documentaries, “General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait,” “Terror’s Advocate” or “The Venerable W.,” this time Schroeder decided to follow painter Ricardo Cavallo.
“I have already done my ‘Trilogy of Evil.’ I could continue: the world is full of bad people. But then there was this friend of mine, who I thought was such a good person,” he tells Variety.
Cavallo, convinced that “true life exists in creation,” could teach anyone how to change their way of seeing, claims Schroeder, sacrificing everything for his art.

Tom Luddy, who co-founded and served as artistic director for the Telluride Film Festival and produced films including “The Secret Garden” and “Barfly,” died Feb. 13 in Berkeley, Calif., after battling a long illness. He was 79.

“The world has lost a rare ingredient that we’ll all be searching for, for some time,” said Telluride Film Festival executive director Julie Huntsinger in a statement. “I would sometimes find myself feeling sad for those who didn’t get to know Tom Luddy properly. Tom Luddy, the film producer who co-founded Telluride Film Festival, died Monday in Berkeley, California, after a long illness, the festival confirmed. He was 79.

What do you do after you make a film that soars so far over budget it cripples one of Hollywood's most beloved studios? First off, you fall to your knees and thank the cinema gods that anyone is willing to finance anything more substantial than a home movie with your name on it. Secondly, you make certain your next film comes in on time and on budget. Finally, maybe tackle a subject that's unlikely to court controversy.
Michael Cimino at the very least delivered 1985's "Year of the Dragon" with a minimum of production fuss, even though his exacting aesthetic standards led him to seamlessly recreate parts of New York City's Chinatown on the Deg backlot in Wilmington, North Carolina while shooting select interiors and exteriors in six different cities all over the world. This might sound like a logistical nightmare, but Cimino learned his lesson from the debacle of "Heaven's Gate.

In Los Angeles Times film critic Justin Chang’s appreciative and insightful review of Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round,” Chang notes “ ‘Another Round,’ while very much about addiction, isn’t really an addiction drama. It’s a male midlife-crisis comedy in which drinking to excess is less a cause than a symptom of Martin’s funk — and sometimes, yes, a viable solution to it.”
Chang, aware of the film’s provocative examination of intoxication, quotes director Vinterberg, who calls the film’s Pov a “scandalous approach to a serious topic,” and Chang notes that “Round” “not only acknowledges, but also celebrates the life-giving buzz his characters experience with every swig of absinthe or Smirnoff.”
This unorthodox and non-judgmental view of the possible joys of dipsomania doesn’t just run counter to the cultural moment we’re in, but it’s also in stark contrast to the mainstream cinema’s traditionally...

Mubi's retrospective Spotlight on Barbet Schroeder is showing summer 2020 - spring 2021.Above: Barbet SchroederTrying to situate Barbet Schroeder on the film world-trend-map of the past six decades can be a tricky task. Coming on the scene as part of the MacMahonist group1, writing for Cahiers du cinéma mostly about American cinema in the late 1950s, Schroeder should be correctly considered a direct descendant of the politique des auteur. However, unlike other acknowledged “sons” of the New Wave, such as Jean Eustache and Philippe Garrel, this inheritance was not directly passed on to Schroeder when he began producing-directing his own stories, following the steps of his much admired Otto Preminger—in fact, his affective bonds with Cahiers didn’t protect him from the occasional scolding from the magazine’s “third-generation” critics: Serge Daney accused Schroeder of turning the subject of his documentary General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait (1974) into a stereotype,...

Just as the new teaser for “Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets” shows, the documentary doesn’t necessarily want to play by the typical documentary rules. Using still photos, video, silent movie-esque narration, and other tricks, the Sundance standout is poised to be one of the most interesting non-fiction releases of 2020.

Icarus Films will be bringing Barbara Schroeder’s documentary “The Venerable W.” to DVD on May 19th.
Synopsis
Evil comes in many forms. In Myanmar, it manifests in the casual racism and Islamophobia of influential, charismatic Burmese Buddhist monk Ashin Wirathu. Through interviews with international journalists and community leaders who protest against Wirathu’s views, shocking amateur footage of the persecution of the Rohingya, and through powerful storytelling, acclaimed director Barbet Schroeder slowly, but inexorably, builds his case. Perhaps most damning of all are the interviews with the man himself; couching his nationalist fervor in life-affirming rhetoric.
Critics’ Comments
“NY Times Critic’s Pick! Barbet Schroeder has made yet another compelling documentary that demands to be seen.”
—New York Times
“Genuinely horrifying!”
– Film Comment
“There’s an ever-present sense of rage and despair burbling beneath the placid surface of Barbet Schroeder’s film.”

The early Nineties were the era of the psycho thriller, particularly those of the sexually charged variety. One of the most well-known films of that genre was Single White Female, directed by Oscar nominee Barbet Schroeder. Adapted from John Lutz's novel "Swf Seeks Same," Single White Female starred Bridget Fonda (Allie) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Hedy), and they're both incredible here. As it goes, Allie's husband-to-be Sam (Steven Weber) has cheated on her with his ex-wife and she can't bear to be around him. She kicks him out of her unbelievably spacious, rent-controlled New York City apartment in The Ansonia building (it gives The Dakota --- featured in Rosemary's Baby --- a run for its money) and decides to get a roommate. Enter Hedra/Hedy, the...

Muller was known for his collaboration with filmmakers including Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch, Lars von Trier, Alex Cox and Barbet Schroeder, who created some of the most notable auteur films of the 1980s and 1990s.
As a European, he brought a memorable approach to portraying Los Angeles on film in William Friedkin’s “To Live and Die in L.A.,” Schroeder’s “Barfly” and Cox’s “Repo Man.”

The last feature-length film he shot was Michael Winterbottom’s 2002 “24 Hour Party People,” which vividly captured the Manchester music scene of the 1980s. That same year, he collaborated with director Steve McQueen on an art installation,...

This article marks Part 7 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
On paper, “Heartburn” (1986) had the sound of a surefire smash. The picture reunited the talented trio from “Silkwood” (1983) – leading lady Meryl Streep, director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Nora Ephron. Production on the film hit a snag early on, as Nichols, seeing no magic between he and Streep, fired leading man Mandy Patinkin after mere days of shooting. Things would presumably still be A-ok, however, if not better, considering Patinkin’s replacement was none other than Jack Nicholson, hot as ever with his Academy Awards victory for “Terms of Endearment” (1983) and success the year prior with “Prizzi’s Honor” (1985).

Kit Harington paired up with his Game of Thrones costar Emilia Clarke at Sean Penn's annual Haiti Rising gala Saturday night. The onscreen love interests posed together for cute photos at the event, during which Brad Pitt bid a healthy $120,000 to watch an episode of the hit HBO series with Daenerys Targaryen herself; the actor dropped six figures in the hopes of winning the opportunity but was outbid by a fellow guest. Bummer! Just one night before linking up with Emilia, Kit was thrown out of NYC haunt Barfly after drunkenly trying to play a round of pool with patrons. Apparently, Kit "started banging on the table, grabbing at pool cues, and getting in people's faces." TMZ also reported that the actor "was asked to leave and did, but came back and finally had to be physically removed" from the bar. Bummer! Keep reading to see more photos of...

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a precedent! Barbet Schroeder’s documentary gets up close and personal with a narcissistic dictator consumed by his own ego. Idi Amin rants and raves incoherently and demands to be the center of all attention while taking his country down a road to ruin. This is Africa in 1973, where Uganda has been converted into ‘The Idi Amin Reality Show’ — and where a minion in disfavor might be fed to the crocodiles.

Marthe Keller stars in Barbet Schroeder's Amnesia
Barbet Schroeder's Amnesia, starring Marthe Keller and Max Riemelt with Bruno Ganz, Corinna Kirchhoff, Fermí Reixach, Marie Leuenberger, and Joel Basman is a supremely personal chamber piece by the filmmaker who brought us Hollywood films such as Reversal Of Fortune (which won Jeremy Irons an Oscar), Barfly (Faye Dunaway, Mickey Rourke) or Single White Female (Bridget Fonda, Jennifer Jason Leigh), who worked with Jacques Rivette and Jean-Luc Godard and directed an episode of Mad Men.

How one Dp captured and defined the juxtaposition of glamour and grime.
Like most major metropolitan areas of the United States, Los Angeles is a juxtaposition of fortune and failure. It’s a city where lifelong dreams are made and crushed every hour of every day, a city that’s home to some of the wealthiest people in our culture, and simultaneously a city that has one of the largest homeless populations in the country. It’s a city of angels and devils alike, the two often co-mingling so even the salvation in Los Angeles seems to come with tinges of sin. On screen, this translates to a landscape that’s both glitzy and grimy, a place of promise and also a spiritual purgatory.
These reasons and more are why not only is Los Angeles the capital of the American filmmaking industry, it’s also the setting for so many films. In...

Conventional wisdom says no way the writers of this show kill off Joe Miller. How could they?
No. Freaking. Way.
No way would they throw down the gauntlet on the tragically hip ex-cop turned space cowboy with the boxing pedigree of Mickey Rourke's "Barfly" and the deadliest one-liners since Chevy Chase's "Fletch." Miller's the guy fans of this show tune in to see every week — the guy we all ask: what's he gonna do or say this week?
But after watching The Expanse Season 2 Episode 5 — a heart-rending, gut-wrenching tear-jerker if there ever was one — what else are we to think, after watching the sentient asteroid he hitched a ride on, with the only love of his life (or at least her consciousness) at the controls crash and burn on Venus?
Miller has already cheated death a bunch of times, so maybe, just maybe (fingers crossed), it's premature to...

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City (2005) is playing on Mubi June 18 - July 17, 2016 in the United States. Sin CityWhat happens when a performer’s face changes? This very question animated a bewildering piece by Owen Gleiberman last month in Variety, wherein Gleiberman—a man—pondered whether Renée Zellweger’s slightly aged, maybe plastic surgery-tinkered visage made her an entirely different performer. He sustained this mediation on the basis of a whopping three-minute trailer for Bridget Jones’ sBaby, hoarily declaring his good intentions to combat Hollywood’s sexist machinations at his piece’s onset. Yet, in spite of this pretense, his approach exhibited an astonishing lack of stringency, ultimately scrutinizing Zellweger along the same sexist lines he claimed to bemoan. Like others, I find this storied practice of male critics inspecting women’s faces pretty odious. If male critics have gotten craftier than such forefathers as John Simon (who,...

Soak up the Sun: Pialat’s Palme d’Or Winning Spiritual Anguish
As part of Cohen Media Group’s Maurice Pialat retrospective, perhaps the most significant title showcased in the lineup is his infamous 1987 title, Under the Sun of Satan. Instantly reviled after winning the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival (with a jury made up of such heavy-hitters as Elem Klimov, Jerzy Skolimowski, Theo Angelopoulos, and Norman Mailer), where Pialat was jeered by a disapproving crowd, the title quickly lapsed into obscurity following a continually tepid critical reception.
Perhaps Pialat’s austere and increasingly deliberate examination of mental and spiritual anguish told through the perspective of a bumbling priest whose blasphemous predicament proves only the presence of Satan rather than God was as simultaneously too old fashioned as it was inconveniently provocative. Based on a 1927 novel by French author Georges Bernanos, Pialat’s treatment does seem...
