The original novel, Hell Hound, is a work of American fiction and is set in an unspecified part of the United States. In this French adaptation, most of the characters names have been changed; for instance Madame Deville, the older woman who is Baxter's first owner, was named Mrs. Prescott. Apart from the titular Baxter, the character names Marie Cuzzo and Joseph Barsky are retained in this adaptation.
Hell Hound, the novel by Ken Greenhall on which this film is based, was originally published in October, 1977, by Zebra Books and was a rare, out of print title for several decades after. The book was re-published by Valancourt Press, with a new introduction by Grady Hendrix, in two editions: in 2017, and then again in January, 2023, as part of Valancourt's "Paperbacks From Hell" series of editions.
