An explosive confrontation between a Muslim man and a Christian mob in an African nation on the brink is at the heart of “Safe House,” an upcoming drama from Norwegian filmmaker Eirik Svensson. The film, which is being repped internationally by TrustNordisk, was presented among the works in progress this week at the Finnish Film Affair in Helsinki.
Written by prolific screenwriters Harald Rosenløw-Eeg and Lars Gudmestad, “Safe House” is based on the real-life story of Lindis Hurum, a Norwegian field worker with the aid group Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) who was stationed in the Central African Republic when civil war erupted in 2013.
The story unfolds on Christmas Eve at a field hospital outside a refugee camp in the capital, Bangui. As Hurum and her colleagues tirelessly work to save lives, a desperate Muslim man rushes into the clinic, fleeing persecution by an angry Christian mob. As the...

Labor Day weekend has come and gone, and that can only mean one thing – it’s TIFF time, baby! Once again, I’ll be attending the Toronto International Film Festival on behalf of JoBlo.com. I’m looking forward to getting an early look at some of the prestigious awards fare we’ll all be hearing plenty about in the coming months. Crazy enough, this will be my sixteenth year in a row covering the festival!
Here’s what I’m most excited to check out at this year’s edition:
Conclave:
Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front was one of the biggest surprises of the 2022 edition of TIFF, as that new adaptation of the classic novel/ film proved to be one of the most dazzling war films in recent memory. It put Berger on the map in a big way, with him tipped as potentially taking...

Bold and the Beautiful has Luna Nozawa thinking her conversations with Rj Forrester are just between them, but when her mother gets carted off, it looks like the young intern can’t trust her boyfriend anymore on this CBS soap. But he’s not the only betrayal Luna faces when B&b rolls out next week.
Bold and the Beautiful: What’s Up with Rj Forrester?
Luna Nozawa (Lisa Yamada) trusted Rj Forrester (Joshua Hoffman) with what she found in the apartment she once called home. She was concerned that her mother hid Tom Starr’s (Clint Howard) backpack behind the couch for a devious reason.
Poppy Nozawa (Romy Park) denied any knowledge of the beat-up bag holding all Tom’s earthly belongings. This included letters he wrote to Poppy but were returned to the sender. It soon appears Luna Nozawa made a grave mistake on Bold and the Beautiful last...

Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.
Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.
The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.
He also served as an Academy vice president and board member for many years.

10 Most Watched Netflix Series Of All Time(Photo Credit –Instagram)
In the past decade, Netflix has dominated the television landscape, doling out the biggest hits in entertainment. Netflix, which launched as a streaming platform a decade later in 2007, pioneered the streaming era, dishing out a slew of original shows that have enabled the streamer to establish itself as an award-winning content giant.
Netflix’s top 10s enable viewers to see the biggest original hits within the first 91 days of release. The hits are measured by taking the runtime of the show or movie and dividing it by the number of hours watched. While the mechanism is a bit convoluted, that’s all the steamer has for you now. At Least the numbers aren’t cloaked in secrecy like in Apple.
The numbers are recorded from October 2021 to June 2024 after Netflix switched its scale from the number of households who watched within the first 28 days.

Julia Roberts has captivated fans all over the world with her iconic romantic comedy films. She has long been heralded as one of America’s sweethearts, painting the actress a picture of a very modest and prim-and-proper woman.

As Kyle Bradstreet’s Secret Invasion reaches its halfway point, the spy series is surprising us in more ways than one. It’s not just the shocking death of Emilia Clarke’s G’iah and the well-signposted reveal that Don Cheadle’s James “Rhodey” Rhodes is a Skrull that make Episode 3 worth a watch. Somehow, Secret Invasion has done the almost unthinkable and made us reconsider Iron Man 3.
Up there with Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World and (more recently) Chloé Zhao’s Eternals, Shane Black’s 2013 threequel is often held as one of the ‘worst’ Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. While even a bad MCU outing usually fares better than an average DC movie, Iron Man 3’s reception hasn’t exactly improved over the years. With botched villains, a bizarre push to release in 3D, and That Mandarin twist, it’s taken a...

Not much happens in the third episode of Secret Invasion, but “Betrayed” is easily the best instalment of the Marvel show yet. The show got off to a messy, uneven start, but after a much-improved second episode it seems to have hit its stride here, as the relationships between the main players gel together and the fraught nature of their history deepens. This episode also has some of the best lighting and composition I’ve seen in the MCU to date.
In “Betrayed”, little time has passed since the “Nick Fury has a wife!” twist at the end of last week’s episode. To be clear, we’ve known Nick had a wife since Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but we didn’t know she was a Skrull. Their marriage is naturally a mess, with Nick having been thought dead for five years during The Blip,...

“Betrayed” doesn’t depict anything that hasn’t been seen many times before, but that’s less a knock on its lack of originality than a sad reflection of the fact that millions suffered similar hardships, tragedies and horrors during the Holocaust. Based on a true story, Eirik Svensson’s WWII saga focuses on the Braude family, who along with hundreds of fellow Norwegian Jews were rounded up and sent to work camps or, via the SS Donau cargo ship on Nov. 26, 1942, to Auschwitz, from which they never returned. , and no less valuable — or powerful — for being regrettably familiar.
Svensson opens “Betrayed” with Nazi collaborator Knut Rød (Anders Danielsen Lie) tranquilly dispensing orders to his men to detain the remaining Jews left in Oslo. It’s a small, quiet vision of the bureaucratic work upon which fascist genocide is built, and it casts a mournful pall over the ensuing action,...

Oscars: Norway Submits Joachim Trier’s ‘The Worst Person In The World’ To International Feature Race
Norway has selected Joachim Trier’s Cannes hit The Worst Person In The World as its submission to the Oscars’ International Feature Film category. The choice was made by the Norwegian Oscar Committee which had earlier shortlisted three pictures, opting for Trier’s third installment of the Oslo Trilogy which the committee believes “has a unique opportunity to reach all the way to an Oscar for best international film.”
Committee chief, Kjersti Mo, who is also Director of the Norwegian Film Institute, called the movie a “tribute to film art in the form of a drama comedy that conveys deep seriousness with playful lightness and elegance.” This is Trier’s third time repping his home country.

Telepool Consolidates Int’l Distribution Business
Telepool’s international distribution division Global Screen has consolidated all sales and acquisition activities across both TV and film content, with Julia Weber appointed to run the entity as Head of International Acquisitions and Sales. Alexandra Heidrich, previously in the role, will depart the company. “The traditional international distribution model is very much a thing of the past. More than ever, we need to engage with creators earlier, and operate as reliable and fully committed co-producers – no matter the type of content. Theatrical films and TV product are each core to our international business. Consolidating everything under Julia’s experienced and proven leadership is a logical next step, and will allow us to be strategic, nimble and growth-focused,” said Telepool CEO Jan Frouman.

Polish director Piotr Domalewski, whose film “I Never Cry” screens this week in El Gouna Film Festival’s Out of Competition section, is facing a growing controversy surrounding his next project. It centers on the Nangar Khel incident, when Polish soldiers fired mortar shells into a wedding party in an Afghan village in 2007, killing six civilians. It became known as “the event that changed the Polish army.” “Some monstrous online discussion has already started,” Domalewski says.
The film is an adaptation of the book “Betrayed” by journalist Edyta Żemła, which investigated where the blame lay for the incident, and itself had an explosive effect, mostly because of Żemła’s claim that “in Nangar Khel, it wasn’t the soldiers who tarnished the honor of the Polish army, but the politicians.” Żemła will act as a consultant on the film, which has the working title “Nangar Khel – Zdradzeni” (“Nangar Khel – Betrayed...

Costa-Gavras, the Greek-born France-based director of some of the most famed movies of political cinema, from 1969’s “Z” to 1981’s “Missing,” will receive a career achievement Donostia Award at this September’s 67th San Sebastian Film Festival.
The filmmaker will collect his prize on Sept. 21 at a ceremony held at San Sebastian’s Victoria Eugenia, where his latest film, “Adults in the Room,” will screen.
The feature is the cinematic adaptation of the book of the same title written by former Greek minister of finance Yanis Varoufakis.According the film’s synopsis, it marks a portrayal of a group of politicians “trapped in an inhuman network of power” in a “brutal circle of Eurogroup meetings which imposed on Greece a dictatorship of austerity.” It’s described as a modern-day tragedy which chronicles the brief six months Varoufakis served in his position.

“Contrary to Farrow’s claims, his story was never cleared or approved for air by NBC News Legal or Standards,” says the Comcast-owned network division this morning in the latest blast after days of dust-ups over how now Pulitzer Prize winning Ronan Farrow’s investigation into claims of sexual harassment and sexual assault against Harvey Weinstein was handled and why the story never ran on-air.
All of which translates into the Andy Lack run organization not quite calling Farrow a liar from his pointed response last night to a supposedly definitive memo from the NBC News chairman and a fact sheet – but basically calling him a liar. Farrow, of course, took portions of the reporting that NBC News now says wasn’t ready for broadcast and lacked sources who would go before the camera to the New Yorker, where he has dropped one extensive expose on Weinstein and others after another.

“Gavras is alive and spoke on Greek state television Thursday,” the wire service said in its follow-up report.
The Associated Press said it had based its its now-retracted report on what it described as a statement from Greek culture minister Mysini Zorba.

The roller coaster that is Mel Gibson just got thrown for yet another loop.
It looks like Gibson and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas won't be collaborating any further on that epic about Jewish hero Judah Maccabee, as Eszterhas' script has been rejected by both the director and Warner Bros., according to The Wrap.
Jewish groups were outraged after news broke last September that Gibson — who had delivered a now-infamous anti-Semitic public rant back in 2006 — had reached a production deal with WB to direct the story of Judah Maccabee, whose victory over Greek and Syrian armies in 2nd century B.C. is celebrated at Hanukkah. One Jewish group called it "a moral lapse in judgment."
Eszterhas, who wrote such B-movie guilty pleasures as "Basic Instinct" and "Showgirls" as well as politically- and religiously-charged thrillers such as "Betrayed" and "Music Box," delivered a draft of the script (called "The Maccabees") in late February.

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Mel Gibson is currently preparing to direct another film after settling his latest bout of personal problems, and it will be based on the life of Judah Maccabee, a Jewish warrior from the 2nd century B.C. Collaborating with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct, Flash Dance) on the script, Gibson will have the first option to direct the untitled film, which is set up at Warner Bros. For those unfamiliar, Judah Maccabee's life revolved around the "triumph and struggle against tyranny and oppression where people gave their lives so that others would be free to worship." This project has apparently been on his wish list to make for quite a while now, even dating back to his drunken arrest when he caused controversy with some anti-Semitic remarks. At first glance this might appear as a drastic change of pace for Gibson, but the story...

Is this an expression of genuine artistic interest, a motion of real penance, or a calculated move? Mel Gibson, a man who in 2006 told a cop "the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," is teaming with Showgirls writer Joe Eszterhas on a script about Jewish hero Judah Maccabee. Depending upon how that script turns out, Gibson may direct and act in the resulting film. Variety [1] says the two are working on the script, with Gibson first in line to direct the film for his own Icon Productions and distributor Warner Bros. Judah Maccabee (or Judas Maccabeus, as some spellings have it) was a Kohen (priest) who led a revolt against the Seleucid Empire around 160 Bce. Or, as Variety has it, he was " a legendary Jewish warrior who, along with his father and four brothers, led a revolt against the Greek-Syrian armies that conquered Judea in the second century B.

The roller coaster that is Mel Gibson just got thrown for another loop.
The director of "The Passion of the Christ" and the writer of "Basic Instinct," Joe Eszterhas, are collaborating on bringing the story of Jewish hero Judah Maccabee to the big screen, according to Deadline.
Yes, we said Mel Gibson is doing a movie about a Jewish hero. A Jewish one.
For those of you with short-term memory loss, the controversial actor-director was accused of anti-Semitism following the release of "The Passion of the Christ" in 2004. After two years of defending his film, Gibson was picked up for driving under the influence and proceeded to go on a drunk tirade against his arresting officer, blaming him and Jews in general for "all the wars in the world."
Needless to say, all this lends an element of surprise -- and inevitable debate -- to the news that Gibson's next project is about Judah Maccabee.
