While streaming services like Netflix offer a shockingly small number of films made before the advent of the Chicken McNugget, thankfully Turner Classic Movies is still showcasing the “greatest classic films of all time from one of the largest film libraries in the world.” And the cable channel doesn’t just air movies, they regularly feature interviews with filmmakers, critics, and this week, the star of Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death.

You may have heard that Bill Maher hated the Barbie movie — an all-too-predictable outcome for a 67-year-old crank who some HBO exec thinks is “edgy” because he spends so much of his airtime railing against “wokeness.” You’d think someone whose film acting CV includes winners like Pizza Man, Tomcats, and Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death would have a bit more self-awareness; then again, this is not one of Maher’s strong suits.

In 1984, a film about blue-collar entrepreneurs fighting a war against government bureaucracy — and an omnipotent eldritch god — solidified Ivan Reitman’s cinematic legacy.
If there’s one film that Reitman, who died Saturday at the age of 75, will probably be remembered for, it’s “Ghostbusters” — the blockbuster adventures of four misfits that blurred the lines between broad comedy, monstrous horror and working-class heroism.
But while “Ghostbusters” may have been Reitman’s biggest financial success, it’s that particular blurring of the lines that was the filmmaker’s lifelong calling card. Reitman repeatedly told stories that precariously but impeccably elevated the humor and heart in practically every genre.
The son of Hungarian Jewish immigrants (his mother an Auschwitz survivor and his father a World War II freedom fighter), Reitman grew up in Canada and studied music in college, gradually working his way into producing low-budget independent films. Reitman directed the comedies...

Producer-director Ivan Reitman, whose wildly successful comedies of the ‘70s and ‘80s included the blockbuster spookfest “Ghostbusters,” died in his sleep on Feb. 12 in Montecito, Calif., his family confirmed to the Associated Press. He was 75. The cause of death was not released.
“Our family is grieving the unexpected loss of a husband, father, and grandfather who taught us to always seek the magic in life,” his children, director Jason Reitman, Catherine Reitman and Caroline Reitman said via a joint statement. “We take comfort that his work as a filmmaker brought laughter and happiness to countless others around the world. While we mourn privately, we hope those who knew him through his films will remember him always.”
Born in Czechoslovakia and raised in Canada (where he first met such young comics as his later stars Dan Aykroyd and Rick Moranis), Reitman made his first major impression as the producer of “National Lampoon’s Animal House” (1978), the madcap,...

This week delivers up a wealth of joy. Cannibal Women! Zombies! Curses! Sinful Dwarfs! Doctor Who! So let’s dive in and see just how we’re going to spend our week!
Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle Of Death
With a title like that, do you even need to know more? Yeah? Well, it stars 1982 Playboy Playmate of the Year Shannon Tweed. And Adrienne Barbeau from Swamp Thing and Creepshow. (Fun Fact: Adrienne Barbeau played Rizzo in the original Broadway production of Grease! And got a Tony nom for it! What!) And Bill Maher, before he got all respectable with his own HBO show and all. To avoid an avocado shortage, an anthropology professor (Tweed!) heads into the avocado jungle of Southern California to confront the man-eating Piranha Women tribe. How the cannibals are affecting the avocado crops is anyone’s guess. But, hey, I live in SoCal, and...

We recently reported that the Mistress of the Dark is returning soon to host horror flicks in Hulu’s 13 Nights of Elvira. Now you can get a taste of the humor to come, as Hulu and Brainstorm Media have provided us with a clip in which Elvira offers witty remarks on 1985’s Trancers and Oscar winner Helen Hunt before imagining what she would say upon winning an Academy Award.
Cassandra Peterson stars as the legendary horror hostess on Hulu’s 13 Nights of Elvira, streaming exclusively on the site beginning October 19th and running through Halloween. Each night Elvira will introduce a fright film and offer occasional comedic commentary—a setup similar to her Movie Macabre performances. Here’s the official schedule:
Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle of Death (1989) Sunday, Oct. 19 Puppet Master (1989) Monday, Oct. 20 Demonic Toys (1992) Tuesday, Oct. 21 Hobgoblins (1988) Wednesday, Oct. 22 The Gingerdead Man (2005) Thursday, Oct. 23 Dollman (1991) Friday, Oct.

For as long as there are horror and sci-fi movies of, shall we say, questionable quality there will be...Elvira. The Mistress of the Dark returns to the small screen in a new Hulu series called 13 Nights of Elvira and this time, she'll be poking fun at a new crop of films with her usual flavor of humor.
The titles include Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Puppet Master, Demonic Toys, Hobgoblins, The Gingerdead Man, Dollman, Trancers, Oblivion, Shrunken Heads, Hideous, Evil Bong, Seedpeople and Night of the Living Dead.

Hulu’s heart is on fire for Elvira. The Mistress of Dark is headed to the subscription-based and (perhaps soon-to-be slightly less) ad-supported “premium streaming TV destination” for a brand new series this Halloween season. 13 Nights of Elvira will feature Cassandra Peterson once again suited up in what very well may be the original stereotypical sexy girl’s Halloween costume to reprise her dual roles of Alistair Cooke and Roger Ebert for the B grade horror movie set. The program is a streaming iteration of Peterson’s cult classic Elvira’s Movie Macabre (which is also currently available on Hulu), and will feature pithy intros, and poignant, punny commentary from the self-proclaimed Personification of Instant Gratification. Elvira will playfully praise and skewer the following terrifically terrible flicks on the daily starting October 19: Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle of Death, Puppet Master, Demonic Toys, Hobgoblins, The Gingerdead Man, Dollman,...

Queen of Halloween, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, is coming to Hulu for Halloween this year with 13 Nights of Elvira. (She's also doing live shows at Knotts Scary Farm.) As she did with Movie Macabre, she'll be hosting a run of B horror movies with her snappy takes, including Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Evil Bong, Seed People, and Shrunken Heads, and she's ending it all with The Night of the Living Dead. The series starts on October 19 and ends on Halloween. Spooky!

This has been a pretty big week for trailers, but while everyone is hootin’ and hollerin’ over Tony Stark’s latest adventure or Greta Gerwig’s dance moves another far greater and somewhat darker trailer has slipped by unnoticed. And that just won’t stand. Full Moon Features, the folks behind such classic film series as Puppetmaster, Subspecies and Trancers, have started a new video streaming service focused on their particular brand of horror, laughs and exploitation. GrindhouseFlix offers fans a ridiculously fun selection of movies for $4.99 per month, and while there are only 29 films currently available they’re adding four more per month. Currently available titles include memorable blasts from the past like Dreamaniac, Laserblast, Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death and more. A little while back I sounded the Liberal Dead Red Alert when an indie director, Theo Lemasters, fell into dire straits regarding the budget for his film, Demonic Aborted Sewer Fecal Fetuses Revenge. Though we gave it our best, we were unable to reach the quota of Facebook fans necessary to acquire funds to pay for the movie. Undeterred, Theo continues in his valiant quest to produce Dasffr, and is scheduled to shoot sometime next spring. However, we here at Tld feel a need to shine the spotlight once more, to give Theo the promotion he deserves. Take it away, Mister Lemasters!
Adam Mudman – First things first, Theo—what is your background on horror films? What sorts of movies did you watch as a kid?
Theo Lemasters – It’s the standard story…I was one of those kids running around in the mid-late ‘80s VHS tidal wave, watching everything I could get my hands on.

Before he was named one of the 40 greatest standup comedians of all time, became an Emmy nominee and found his voice as one of the most wry political commentators of our time, Bill Maher was an actor.
And he made some amazingly cheesy TV shows and movies.
As the host of "Real Time" climbed his way up the standup ladder, he tried his hand at Hollywood's more traditional career path, first appearing in the 1983 film "DC Cab." The film, about a bunch of cab drivers in, you guessed it, DC, is most memorable for its amazingly time-appropriate cast, which featured Mr. T and Gary Busey.
Other notable moments in his acting career include, "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death," and a two episode turn in "Murder She Wrote." But we'll let you take a look for yourself (hat tip to The Back Stage for the tip).

Los Angeles (Reuters) - Kiss frontman Gene Simmons will marry his girlfriend of 28 years, the actress and former Playmate Shannon Tweed, in an October ceremony, his representative said on Thursday.
The wedding will put a traditional twist on a decidedly untraditional relationship between the hard rock icon and the model that, since 2006, has been chronicled in the reality TV show "Gene Simmons: Family Jewels" on cable network A&E.
The Israeli-born Simmons and the Canadian-born Tweed have two adult children together, Nick and Sophie.
An invitation for the wedding, which will be held on October 1 in Los Angeles, was created that contains drawings of the family done by Nick Simmons and a message by Sophie Simmons.
"There will no longer be a Team Tweed or a Team Simmons but instead a Team Tweed-Simmons," the message read.

Rocker/pitchman extraordinaire Gene Simmons has finally popped the question to longtime girlfriend Shannon Tweed (Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death), and the answer, on tonight's season finale of Gene Simmons Family Jewels (click here to watch preview), will not be much of a surprise. Rock star/Playmate relationships rarely last almost three decades, so their famous cohabitation is noteworthy in itself. Simmons could have done worse than make an honest woman of Tweed on a scenic pier in Belize, and this seems to be the logical conclusion of what I gather has been a gradual "taming of the 'do" on their reality show this season. Trust me, if he ends up giving her an engagement ring with a diamond-encrusted Kiss logo, it wouldn't surprise me. The guy is so good at hawking his own merchandise that I suddenly have an impulse to [...]...

Hey, it’s Clash of the Titans meets Harry Potter! Awesome! Or maybe not. “I definitely have strong feelings for you. I just haven’t decided if they’re positive or negative yet.” Who says that? What teenager says anything like that? Also: the title of this film may be the biggest, most cumbersome movie title since The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed-Up Zombies. Or maybe Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. Or Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo. On a positive note, I do believe I’ve been saying for years that Sean Bean is a god, and I’m delighted to be vindicated. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief opens in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. on February 12.
