Two Nelwyn siblings Ranan Ufgood and his sister Mims discover a mysterious human baby girl on a makeshift raft in a nearby river outside the family farm. Their mother Kiya brings the baby girl into their home to care for her, much to the disapproval of her husband Willow who fears that the baby girl will give him nothing but trouble. But, things soon change when the Nelwyn village is attacked. Realizing the baby girl is endangering the village, Willow is forced to bring the baby girl to a council meeting and The High Aldwin, the Nelwyn sorcerer who rules the village senses that there is something special about the baby girl and decides to send Willow out and beyond the village and find a responsible human who will care for and protect the baby girl. Willow leaves the Nelwyn village and sets off to give the baby girl to a responsible human. After learning from the powerful entity Cherlindrea that the baby girl is named Elora Danan and that she is a princess and that an evil sorceress called Queen Bavmorda seeks to destroy her and that Elora threatens the throne. Willow, joined by Madmartigan, a mad rogue swordsman. The arrogant and cheeky Brownies Franjean and Rool and the sorceress Finn Razel. Willow sets out to protect Elora Danan from Queen Bavmorda and deliver Elora Danan to the castle of Tir Asleen to safety as well as dealing with Queen Bavmorda's soldiers led by the evil General Kael and her daughter Sorsha who are in pursuit and are bent on capturing Elora Danan alive and bring her to Queen Bavmorda to be executed.

A crowd gathers out Tir Asleen to bid farewell to Willow. Fin Razel gives Willow a book of magic to help him become a great sorcerer and as a token of appreciation. Willow says goodbye to Elora, Sorsha and Madmartian who have adopted Elora and Madmartigan puts Willow on a horse and Willow rides off back home. Willow is greeted back in the Nelwyn village and the Nelwyn applauses and the High Aldwin proudly meets Willow and Willow throws a rock into the air which magically transforms into a bird. Kiya, Ranan and Mims appear and Willow gets off the horse and runs to them and embraces them and Willow tells them how much he missed them. Willow has returned home a hero.
