‘The Burbs’ Director Reacts to Movie’s Keke Palmer-Led Series Remake: “It’s Kind of a One-Off Story”
Joe Dante is a bit surprised that his movie The ‘Burbs is getting the series-remake treatment.
Dante recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to promote the Max animated series Gremlins: The Wild Batch returning this week for its second season. Dante directed the 1984 feature Gremlins and its 1990 sequel, and he serves as consulting producer on the prequel show.
The filmmaker also helmed the 1989 dark comedy The ‘Burbs, which starred Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher in the story of a family man who becomes convinced that his new neighbors are hiding a spooky secret. The movie received renewed attention with the news last month that Keke Palmer is set to star in a series version for Peacock from executive producers Brian Grazer and Seth MacFarlane.
Dante took to X (formerly Twitter) at the time of the series announcement with the message, “Call me maybe,” in response to a post about the news.

Because no ‘80s movie is immune to the Hollywood reboot trend (a $20 million-per-episode prestige TV remake of Weird Science will surely happen any day now), we’re now getting a new version of The ‘Burbs, the 1989 Tom Hanks comedy about a gang of middle-class suburbanites who begin to suspect that their new “Slavic” neighbors are murderous Satanic cultists.
Play
As we’ve pointed out before, The ‘Burbs has arguably never been more relevant, coming at a time when conspiracy theories are as rampant as ever, and American xenophobia has been cranked up to 11. And while the original was clearly riffing on the “Satanic Panic” paranoia of the 1980s, we’re currently living at a time when everything from Taylor Swift concerts to restaurants at Disney World have been accused of promoting demonic messaging.
At least people seem to have backed off from the idea that He-Man toys and Smurf dolls are the handiwork of Lucifer.

There have been a lot of roles that have been elevated by the brilliance of Carrie Fisher. While most casual fans know her as Princess Leia, the actress has a very storied work history in Hollywood. One such role has her starring in a film with Tom Hanks, this being her second time co-starring with the actor.

Tom Hanks got his first big breakthrough on the big screen with Ron Howard’s mermaid-out-of-water comedy Splash. But it wasn’t his run on the sitcom Bosom Buddies that landed him a spot alongside Daryl Hannah. It was actually whooping Fonz’s butt!
In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show (per Entertainment Weekly), Tom Hanks reflected on his one-off appearance in the season 10 episode “A Little Case of Revenge”, which aired in November 1982. “I kicked Fonzie…I got dressed up in a judo karate outfit. And I think I’m legendarily the first guy to actually strike Fonzie. I kicked him through the stained glass window of Al’s Drive-in,” he said, referring to the popular hangout for the Happy Days gang.
And that, apparently, was enough to impress Ron Howard, who was set to direct Splash, based on what would become an Oscar-nominated screenplay.

Grace, Prepon and fellow That ’70s Show stars Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Wilmer Valderrama are all set to make guest appearances in the sequel series.
Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are just some of the big names starring in Barris’ feature directorial debut, You People, written by Barris and Hill and hitting Netflix on Jan. 27. In the rom-com, Hill’s Ezra Cohen and Lauren London...

2022 represented Netflix’s 25th (!!) year of operations as a company. Unfortunately, the streamer celebrated its 25th birthday with some earnings losses, massive cancelations, and a whole host of bad press. What will year 26 hold for the little Blockbuster killer that could? We now have a good idea thanks to Netflix’s list of new releases for January 2023.
Netflix is kicking off 2023 with some muscular original series…and in one instance we mean literally muscular. Vikings: Valhalla season 2 will premiere on Jan. 13, bringing some much needed Norse mayhem back to television. Other titles of note include Ginny & Georgia season 2 (Jan. 5), and That ’90s Show (Jan. 19). The most intriguing option, however, might be what Netflix is choosing to open its year with. Kaleidoscope premieres on Jan. 1 and will present a heist story that will be told in a random order for each Netflix viewer.
Meanwhile, the true crime machine continues apace for Netflix in 2023. Jan.

One of the great things about this time of year is that there are a handful of films that straddle the holiday divide between Halloween and Christmas. Family favorites like "The Nightmare Before Christmas" or nasty slashers like "Silent Night, Deadly Night" really lean into the holiday cheer (or fear) and have become year's end viewing staples for movie buffs everywhere. Perhaps one of the most beloved films that fits nicely into the frightfully festive category is the 1984 horror comedy "Gremlins," about a seemingly adorable Christmas present that goes horribly awry.
Directed by Joe Dante, "Gremlins" was a hit amongst moviegoers and critics alike, and it's easy to see why. The film expertly blends elements of horror and playfulness with its reliance on the sickeningly sweet cuteness of Gizmo the mogwai and the crass antics of the evil gremlins. What also makes the movie great is its dark humor (I'm...

Tom Hanks has lefts his fans guessing after saying he’s made just four “pretty good” movies in 30 years.
The actor has been a fixture in Hollywood since the 1980s, when he starred in films including Splash!, Big and The ‘Burbs.
It was in the 1990s when he started earning awards acclaim, winning Best Actor at the Oscars two years in a row for Forrest Gump and Philadelphia.
His other credits in the 1990s include two Toy Story films, You’ve Got Mail and The Green Mile.
Hanks has also regularly worked with director Steven Spielberg, appearing in Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me if You Can, The Terminal, Bridge of Spies and The Post.
Hanks was promoting his debut novel, titled The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, when he told People: “No one knows how a movie is made – though everyone thinks they do.”

This may come as a surprise to some people, but the pearly gates and well-kept lawns of ideal suburban America? Nothing is ever as pleasant as it seems. Truly a shocker, we know. Of course, the disruption of romanticized American lives has spawned countless notable films, such as “Blue Velvet” by David Lynch or “The ‘Burbs” by Joe Dante. Often equally colorful in their visuals and horror-tinged in their actual material, dark tales of suburbia continue to enchant, as we never know what’s going on beyond the white picket fence.

Surprisingly, veteran actor Bruce Dern hasn’t done many regular television roles throughout his six-decade career. But he jumped at the chance to work with old friend Billy Bob Thornton on the Amazon Prime legal drama “Goliath.” He played Frank Zax, former pharmaceutical executive during the fourth and final season of the series. That role over the course of the episodes brought him a barnburner of a legal battle with his ruthless brother George, played by J.K. Simmons.
During our recent chat Dern reveals, “I’d never really done a scene in a courtroom. I had been a judge in ‘All the Pretty Horses’ for Billy Bob. Movies and acting are really about photographing, in a really interesting way, conversations. I liked that style in what they were doing… Billy said you’re here because you’re you, and you’re extremely unpredictable and it’s not planned out. You have your ‘Dernsies,...

Whether you grew up watching Gremlins, The ’Burbs, Matinee, Small Soldiers, or The Hole, Joe Dante's films have spanned generations and given countless viewers something to lean on in their formative years and beyond into adulthood. While he's perhaps best known as a director, Dante is now paying it forward to the next generation of filmmakers (much like his friend Roger Corman) as an executive producer, with his latest project being Andy Palmer's Camp Cold Brook, a film that follows a team of paranormal investigators to a haunted summer camp where they encounter more than they bargained for when it comes to communicating with the other side.
With Camp Cold Brook now in theaters and on Digital and VOD from Shout! Studios, Daily Dead recently had the honor of speaking with Dante about working with Palmer and Shout! Factory on the new horror film. During our chat, Dante...

When Tom Hanks jogged onto screen in his feature film debut in the 1980 slasher pic “He Knows You’re Alone,” one probably couldn’t have predicted he would go on to become one of the most successful and beloved actors of all time. Playing a psychology student who postulates about the appeal of fear, Hanks makes manages to the most of his few minutes of screen time. And even though it’s brief, you can catch some of the hallmarks of what would later become a Tom Hanks performance — charismatic but a little goofy, handsome but non-threatening, and able to make any line sound like it has a handful of meanings.
It’s been a long journey from that low-budget horror movie to two-time Academy Award-winning actor, Emmy-award winning producer and Hollywood’s Nicest Guy. On Jan. 5, the eight-time Golden Globe winner will receive the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s special honor,...

The EC Comics-inspired poster for Canadian horror comedy Red Letter Day plays on the absurdity of the Red Communist Scare of the 1950s, in conjunction with the white flight that moved families out of the cities and into new minted 'ticky-tacky' houses on the outskirts. Or the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, where the TV news programmes promised sinister cults hiding in plain sight, behind every curtained bay window - In Your Neighbourhood. One of the comic-book seals in Morgan Curley's design below reads "Awkward Silencio." Yes, it is the production company of the film, and yet it is also often a part of the social contract in the 'Burbs as much as to David Lynch's pillars of the...
