It was recently reported that the great Mel Brooks has been cast in the upcoming animated film The Land of Sometimes, based on the acclaimed audiobook by Francesca Longrigg. This is hardly the first time that Brooks has lent his voice to a family movie, lest we forget that he had a small role in the cartoon remake of Blazing Saddles that absolutely nobody saw, and played a fanged toilet-monster in Look Who’s Talking Too.
With The Land of Sometimes, which tells the story of two twins who “embark on adventures with mystical creatures after being transported to a magical island,” Brooks joins a cast that also includes Ewan McGregor, Helena Bonham-Carter and Monty Python’s Terry Jones. Which is a little weird, because Jones died four years ago.
Sadly, Jones passed away in 2020 at the age of 77 from complications associated with a rare form of dementia, known as Ftd.

In the late eighties/ early nineties, shortly after they did Predator together, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McTiernan and writer Shane Black were all set to team on a big-budget movie adaptation of the DC comic book Sgt. Rock. This is why, at the end of Predator, Black is seen reading a Sgt Rock comic during the cast roll. According to author Nick de Semlyan’s new book, “The Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the project was heavily developed in ’88 and ’89, only to be demolished by an unlikely candidate – Monty Python’s John Cleese.
At the time, Cleese was riding high on the success of A Fish Called Wanda, and McTiernan thought he would be an ideal addition to the movie’s cast. The film was set to adapt an old Danny Kaye comedy called Imitation General. Cleese would play an English cook posing as a general during WW2 and being...

Monty Python creator, writer and director Terry Jones threw away punchlines to refresh comedy.
Screenwriter, director, and author Terry Jones, a founding member of Monty Python, died at the age of 77, according to Variety. He had been suffering from frontotemporal dementia, which his son Bill revealed publicly in September 2016. The disease left the comedian unable to speak.
"Over the past few days his wife, children, extended family and many close friends have been constantly with Terry as he gently slipped away at his home in North London," Jones' family said in a statement. "We have all lost a kind, funny, warm, creative and truly loving man whose uncompromising individuality, relentless intellect and extraordinary humour has given pleasure to countless millions across six decades."
Terence Graham Parry Jones was born in North Wales on Feb. 1, 1942. He met his long-term collaborator Michael Palin while studying English at Oxford University.

London – Co-founding one of the most influential comedy troupes in history just wasn’t enough for Terry Jones, of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.” He also had to become one of the foremost amateur medieval history scholars in the world, among his many achievements as author, director and comic sketch creator. Jones passed away in London on January 21st, 2020. He was 77.
Terrence Graham Parry “Terry” Jones was born in Colwyn Bay on the north coast of Wales in England. He graduated from St Edmund Hall, a constituent college of Oxford University, where he met future writing partner Michael Palin. He broke into British television in 1967 along with Palin in the show “Twice a Fortnight,’ worked with Eric Idle in “Do Not Adjust Your Set,” and wrote alongside Graham Chapman John Cleese, Idle and Palin (all soon-to-be Pythoners) on “The Frost Report.”

Glinwood worked with Roman Polanski, Jeremy Thomas, Karel Reisz and Terry Jones.
UK industry veteran Terry Glinwood has died aged 82 following complications from surgery for a minor complaint.
Glinwood’s career spanned fifty years as a producer and sales executive during which time he worked closely with some of the European industry’s leading figures.
He entered the business in the 1960s as a production controller working on Roman Polanski films Repulsion and Cul-De-Sac.
In the 1970’s he would work closely with fellow-producers Ned Sherrin and Beryl Vertue and director Bob Kellett on a string of UK comedies including Up Pompeii and The Alf Garnett Saga as well with UK producer John Heyman and Grease and Saturday Night Fever producer Robert Stigwood.

A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.
It would of course be so easy to simply concentrate on the well known, iconic,...

Lately more used to voice work and eccentric cameos, it's a good few years since John Cleese stepped up for a role as a scenery-chewing villain. Putting that sad situation to rights, however, is the indie fantasy adventure Albion: Rise Of The Danann, in which he'll play Albion's tyrannical king. Debra Messing will be his queen.According to the available synopsis, the film involves a 12-year-old girl (Avery Rath) who is spirited away to a mystical land on a magical horse. When she gets there she finds that she alone is the key to saving the kingdom. The word "destiny" will almost certainly crop up somewhere.Albion, of course, is the ye olde name for Britain, while "Dannan" would seem to refer to the legendary Tuatha Dé Danann: the pre-Christian invaders of Gaelic Ireland who were driven underground and became bad elves the Sidhe. We have visions of Cleese in...

Monty Python’s Terry Jones arrived during a break in the clouds Friday for an Adr session at West La’s The Village, the storied recording studio where the late Robin Williams lent his voice to Jones’ upcoming sci-fi comedy Absolutely Anything shortly before his death this summer.
“One thing we’re grateful to Robin for is he was the first to come on and he stuck with the whole thing,” recalled Jones’ close collaborator Gavin Scott (The Mists of Avalon, Small Soldiers). “The kind of attitude that led him to stick with the project through all its ups and downs, he totally exhibited here. He wanted to make everybody feel good from the engineer to the lady making the coffee. It was very late in the day for him and we didn’t know that, but he was a real mensch.”

As the Monty Python revival continues apace, it has been confirmed that Simon Pegg is to star in sci-fi comedy Absolutely Anything, directed by Python alumnus Terry Jones and featuring the voices of fellow Python’s John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin along with Jones himself and Robin Williams.
Bill & Ben Productions today confirmed that Pegg, seen recently in Star Trek Into Darkness, The World’s End and Mission Impossible 4, is aboard the movie.
Pegg said: “As someone whose love of comedy was hugely informed by Monty Python, the chance to work with Terry was a gift. Meeting your heroes is one thing - working with them is something else.”

Monty Python fans everywhere woke up on Tuesday to the exciting news of an official reunion.
Since 1983's The Meaning of Life, the surviving members have yet to embark on a proper, official Monty Python project together. However, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and Eric Idle are to reunite for a special stage production.
As Eddie Izzard wrote on Twitter: "Monty Python reforming to do a gig is as big as The Beatles reforming to do a gig."
To mark this monumental comedy moment, Digital Spy takes a look back at 30 years of near-misses, almosts-but-not-quites and other mini-reunions that have led to today's (November 21) press conference.
1983: Yellowbeard
Released shortly after The Meaning of Life, this comedy was written by Graham Chapman, alongside Peter Cook and Python collaborator Bernard McKenna. Centred around Chapman's pirate who is imprisoned for tax evasion, it also starred John Cleese and Eric Idle in minor roles.

Thor: Hammer Of The Gods
Stars: Zachery Ty Bryan, Mac Brandt, Daz Crawford, Alexis Peters | Written by Steve Bevilacqua, Rafael Jordan | Directed by Todor Chapkanov
Vikings always seem to interest film makers, we’ve had the classic Kirk Douglas movie, we’ve even had the comic Erik the Viking, and we’ve had the 3D “spectacle” that was Beowulf. Now that we have moved into super hero territory with the most recent Thor film we’ll also get the smaller lower budget versions that don’t try to make Thor an alien but the God that he was in the original legends.
In Thor: Hammer of the Gods Thor is in fact a human character who along with a small group of other Vikings including his brothers invades an island looking for riches. All they find though is a group of people who are being terrorised by creatures that could...

Comedy is probably the most subjective genre of all, and what makes one person shoot milk from their nose in laughter may make another person yawn. To that end I’m happy to point out that two of the year’s funniest movies are hitting DVD today. They’re both perfectly cast and filled with plenty of laugh out loud moments, and that’s a guarantee. Whether or not you respond appropriately to them is your business… but I recommend soy milk as the nasal spurting liquid of choice. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Erik the Viking (UK) Erik (Tim Robbins) is a really nice guy, but he’s a pretty shitty viking. Weary of looting and pillaging, and having never really discovered a taste for rape, Erik convinces his fellow vikings to head to sea in search of the legendary Rainbow Bridge. In...

Senna
The mark of any great documentary is that it satisfies both viewers who know its subject intimately and those who may have never been interested.
Even if you are someone who thinks Formula One racing is just a rich person's folly where the fastest car always wins, Senna will put you straight. Brazil's Ayrton Senna was to F1 racing what Jimi Hendrix was to guitar playing and what Ali was to boxing: someone so naturally gifted he made being the best look easy. Yet closer inspection reveals levels of effort and devotion most would find impossible. Senna wasn't a tactical racer like his nemesis, Prost, or a lover of the computer-corrected cars that briefly took over the sport; he was a purist, a driver who could be so "in the zone" that things like poor weather only gave him something to overcome. He was so in tune that he...

Police brutality never felt so good. Notorious video nasty creator William Lustig and B-Movie legend Larry Cohen return to the dirty streets for a unique high speed collision of the slasher movie and police thriller in Maniac Cop, a blood splattered tale of brutal cop vengeance from beyond the grave.
When reports come in of a man in a police uniform committing gore drenched bloody murder on the city streets, officer Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell) stands accused. The unveilings continue for Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" with today's dwarf pictorial coming from Time Magazine.
Their photo shows the dwarf lords Balin (Ken Stott) and Dwalin (Graham McTavish), brothers who are close relatives and the "most loyal and trusted friends" of the Company's leader Thorin Oakshield.
Balin has fought many battles but harbors doubts about their quest, Dwalin has no such doubts and is a strong fighter with a distrust of all non-Dwarves - especially Elves.
Both Stott and McTavish are Scottish actors best known for their TV work but have had plenty of big screen experience as well.
Stott is mostly known for British police dramas such as taking over the title role in the detective series "Rebus" from "The Mummy" actor John Hannah in 2006 and 2007. Stott also scored much acclaim and an award nomination for his work as Di Chappell in ITV police...

Chicago – Even though the summer movie season is barely halfway over, it seems clear that, when we reminisce about summer 2011 later this year, one of the biggest surprises of the season will have to be the simple fact that it was possible to make a “Thor” movie that actually works. Because, c’mon, it’s Thor. He’s the hammer guy. The winged helmet guy. The living god who hangs out with the Hulk and the Silver Surfer. This is a movie that very easily could’ve been laughed out of the multiplexes, but, thanks to some very shrewd decisions by director Kenneth Branagh and Marvel Studios, “Thor” became one of the most fun, watchable, and oddly compelling superhero movies of the past few years. It was light years better than the much-easier-to-adapt “Green Lantern”, got us nominally more excited for July’s “Captain America” movie, and was a much,...

The Daily Show's John Oliver is a very funny man. Terry Jones is also a very funny man. And Terry Jones has many, many very funny friends, including all of his old cohorts in Monty Python's Flying Circus. And he's bringing them all together for the upcoming Absolutely Anything.
Jones - the other directing Python - has been away from the director's chair for a while but the man definitely has the touch, his Erik The Viking being one of my very favorite comedies that virtually nobody else seems to have ever seen despite it featuring a young Tim Robbins prancing about and singing that he is the Air! But they’ve set as the next Phoenix project a comedy that will be directed by former Monty Python troupe member Terry Jones. They'll produce Absolutely Anything, from an original script Jones wrote with Gavin Scott. While circumspect about logline, they tell me it involves "aliens, a goofy Brit, a talking dog and buckets of silliness." They’ve set The Daily Show with Jon Stewart correspondent John Oliver to star, and Jones is in discussions with Robin Williams to play the role of Dennis the Dog. He has reached out to former Python pals John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam to voice the aliens. The film will be financed out of the UK, and production will begin by next spring. Medavoy has a...

My father, Bob Cuff, who has died aged 87, was a film technician who specialised in matte painting – a post-production technique used to create a background for live action scenes, providing images that would be otherwise impossible or too expensive to shoot. He contributed mattes and other effects to films including The Guns of Navarone, Dr Strangelove and The Life of Brian. His skills also earned him a commission to render Jayne Mansfield's chest more "respectable" for a TV programme in the late 1950s.
Bob was born in Ilford, Essex, and educated at St Paul's school in south-west London. During the second world war, he became a land worker. He did his national service as a psychiatric nurse. After graduating from Camberwell School of Arts in 1951, he joined the special effects department at Shepperton studios, where he formed a lifelong working partnership with the visual effects specialist John Mackey.
