The movie was criticized mainly on two things: the questionable incestuous relationship between Nelligan and his mother Emilie, and the suspicion of his homosexuality, as he had neutral feelings for Idola St-Jean, and hanging out with Arthur de Bussières, presumably gay since he prostituted himself for passing sailors.
