When Kevin Costner produced, directed, and starred in his first epic Western, “Dances with Wolves,” back in 1990, he went home on Academy Awards night with an armful of Oscars — including a Best Director statue in a year when his competition included Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. This year, Costner released the first chapter in his projected four-part passion project “Horizon: An American Saga,” and by virtually every standard, it’s an even more impressive work than “Dances with Wolves”: more complex in its themes and sense of moral inquiry, more expressive in its visual style and soundscape, and abundant with exquisitely crafted set pieces.
Unlike “Dances with Wolves,” however, “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” has struggled to find an audience, which puts it at a disadvantage in the awards race — after all, Academy and guild members have to actually see a movie to vote for it. A patient,...

As long as there’ve been undercover police operations, there’ve been movies about one of them staying so long with the bad guys that he’s become bonded with them and is close to losing his original self. One popular example is Keanu Reaves turning into Patrick Swayze’s bestie in 1991’s Point Break. One regrettable example is its 2015 reboot. The Thai action flick Bangkok Dog lands solidly in the genre’s plus column.
The story opens with a pair of US cops busting a couple of thugs who have smuggled people and drugs from Thailand, resulting in 5 corpses in a container. They’d died in transit when the baggies of cocaine they’d been forced to swallow had burst. One of the officers, D.Y. Kathryn Bigelow’s action-bromance about bank-robbing surfer dudes is an enduring cult gem, thanks to its joining of tropes and tones
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s crazy action romp from 1991 now gets a rerelease. Eric Hobsbawm might have called it the final moment of The Long Eighties Decade of Action Movies, with shootouts, PAEs (pointless action explosions) and a recurring prosthetic cameo for Ronald Reagan. Bigelow’s feminist achievement in showing she could make an action movie as well as any man was perhaps, but probably not, underscored by a brief scene in which leading man Keanu Reeves gets a savage beatdown from a naked young woman.
Point Break is a freaky mix of Dog Day Afternoon and Big Wednesday; bank robbing meets surfing. Straight-arrow rookie federal agent Johnny Utah, played by Reeves – inscrutable and husky-voiced as ever – is posted to LA, where he’s partnered-cute with an older and irascible officer.

The BBC Studios Anz General Manager and Creative Director of Production knows new versions of Death in Paradise, The Office and Top Gear require full attention to succeed, especially with buyers hesitant to put their hands in their pockets and more willing than ever to pull the trigger on disappointments.
“From my personal BBC Studios perspective, we’re on a great run,” says the Sydney-based exec. “We have commissions across the majority of networks with a very broad mix of genres. You never know which runner will have its moment in the light, so it’s important to be the best at all of them, to play to your strengths.”

Keanu Reeves’ beard was a prickly subject for “John Wick” financiers. Franchise directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch revealed there’s an unusual reason why the backers of their action classic were anti-facial hair.
During an interview with Business Insider discussing the 10th anniversary of the 2014 film, Stahelski recalled the “John Wick” team having “caught a lot of shit” for wanting Reeves’ character to have a beard.
“We felt you can’t fire us, so first day of shooting, we had Keanu in the beard, and later that week, when they watched the dailies, with cinematographer Jonathan Sela’s now-famous half-light shots, people fucking loved it,” Stahelski said.
So what was their objection? A tired one. Leitch said they were given the “classic studio line” that Reeves “needs to be clean-shaven for international” audiences.
“We wanted to do something cool with Keanu,” Stahelski said. “But the money people, they wanted to see Keanu fucking Reeves.

John Wick came out ten years ago, and its directors have been reflecting on issues over Keanu Reeves and his beard ahead of filming.
The action franchise John Wick is celebrating is tenth birthday, remarkably, and from its relatively low budget roots, it’s turned into something of a juggernaut. Four films so far, with spin-off movie Ballerina arriving next year. That, and TV projects too. Not bad.
The original film was directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, and in a conversation with Business Insider, they’ve lifted the lid on the arguments surrounding the first movie. It turns out that facial hair, specifically Keanu Reeves’ facial hair, was originally on the list.
Chad Stahelski revealed to the outlet that “we were trying to do a modern-day Greek mythology fantasy movie. That’s not mainstream. So we wanted to do something cool with Keanu.”

As the great screenwriter William Goldman once wrote in his book "Adventures in the Screen Trade," when it comes to generating successful films in Hollywood, "nobody knows anything." The astute observation Goldman was making is an evergreen one, which is that despite the film industry's constant quest to minimize risk and maximize profits, there exists no surefire formula for a movie's financial victory. Although we're going through a particularly bad moment in time when it comes to studios and other financiers assuming that any work adapted from intellectual property will be a hit, this mentality has plagued the movie business practically since it began. Due to this, the issue has cropped up during the production of literally every movie ever made, and most often in the dumbest of ways.
While there can be some understandable logic to executives and distributors being wary of films that seem too aggressively antagonistic or feel too undercooked,...

The first John Wick movie will soon return to theaters to celebrate its 10th anniversary. As the franchise has spawned sequels, spinoffs, TV series, video games, and more, it’s easy to forget that the first film was such a surprise. Directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch faced an uphill battle to make John Wick, including fighting with financiers to keep Keanu Reeves’ beard.
It’s hard to imagine John Wick without his beard (which looks great on him), but financiers were concerned that it would make the film more difficult to sell in international markets. “We were trying to do a modern-day Greek mythology fantasy movie. That’s not mainstream. So we wanted to do something cool with Keanu,” Stahelski told Business Insider. “But the money people, they wanted to see Keanu f***ing Reeves. ‘Point Break’ Keanu, ‘Speed’ Keanu. “John Wick” directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch marked the 10th anniversary of their action movie by speaking to Business Insider about the various battles they had to overcome in order to launch the Keanu Reeves-led franchise. One of the most surprising arguments centered on the actor’s beard, as the financiers of “John Wick” preferred the star to be clean shaven like his famous turns in “Point Break,” “Speed” and “The Matrix.”
“Absolutely. We were trying to do a modern-day Greek mythology fantasy movie. That’s not mainstream. So we wanted to do something cool with Keanu,” Stahelski said about the beard. “But the money people, they wanted to see Keanu fucking Reeves. ‘Point Break’ Keanu, ‘Speed’ Keanu. And I don’t know if this exists anymore, but at the time we were told by the powers that be you don’t cover up your leading man’s face with a beard.

Keanu Reeves has been an absolute favorite of many film critics and audiences. His career has been very interesting since this actor has been open to starring in almost any genre. However, he has been mostly known for his action-driven films. For example, a lot of action movie lovers recognize him for the Matrix films and John Wick series. What they don’t know is how he has struggled in his personal life as well as experimented with other genres.
Reeves was born on September 2nd, 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon. He was raised in Toronto, Canada. He is of Chinese-Hawaiian descent from his father’s side. His father was a geologist. Reeves had a mother that worked in the industry as a performer and later designed costumes. His parents divorced nonetheless. He ended up residing with his mother and sister. As he got older, he developed a keen interest in acting.

The Office created a major sensation in the mockumentary sitcom genre in 2005. The public was still reeling from the conclusion of Friends, so it gave them the much-needed alternative for their laughter-filled evenings. Based on the British series of the same name, it starred Steve Carell as the lead Michael Scott. After its conclusion in 2013, fans were excited about the possibility of a reunion or a reboot.

When the US version of The Office was first announced, the reception to it wasn’t initially great, as fans of the Ricky Gervais show weren’t convinced if the Steve Carell-led version could live up to the original. Two decades later, Aussie star Felicity Ward has found herself in a similar position, as fans of the US version, especially that of Michael Scott, aren’t too thrilled about the new reimagining with a female boss at the center.

Image Source: Shout Factory When future Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow made Point Break in 1991, she had a pair of stars who were both on hot streaks: Patrick Swayze with Dirty Dancing, Road House, and Ghost; and Keanu Reeves with his two successful Bill & Ted films. Pairing them for an action movie set against the world of surfing turned out to be a brilliant move, as the movie turned out to be an enduring hit that long ago entered a second life as a cult classic. We once talked with Swayze about the film — he wasn’t shy about taking risks during his lifetime, but even he was shaken by some of the surfing scenes he filmed for the movie. Before Sandra Bullock became one of the highest-paid actresses and one of the most revered ones in Hollywood, she was a struggling performer who had featured in TV films and independent films. The actress got her big breakthrough when she starred in Speed along with Keanu Reeves, which went on to earn $350 million against a $37 million budget.
The action film is best known for its bus stunt sequences and edge-of-the-seat thrilling scenes. The film, along with Point Break, established him as an action hero. While Bullock became a huge star after the film, she joked that she was only chosen because if she died while filming, it would not be a huge headline because she was not a big actor.

Keanu Reeves as a pro quarterback? You bet! Before he was dodging bullets in The Matrix or laying down vengeance in John Wick, Reeves stepped into the cleats of a football star in The Replacements. Apparently, his on-screen Qb skills were so on point that the Baltimore Ravens actually considered hiring him! Yep, the real NFL team was so impressed by his fictional playbook that they thought he could handle the real deal. Talk about life imitating art!

Who knew the humble Canadian actor could almost have gone from throwing scripted TDs to throwing real ones? While Reeves didn’t trade in Hollywood for the NFL, the legend of his Qb prowess still gets fans talking.

Fall is here, which means it’s time to bundle up on your couch and stream the weekend away. Let’s get into it: There’s plenty to enjoy in October on Netflix, from a new Ali Wong special to new seasons of shows like “Love Is Blind” and “Unsolved Mysteries.” The real unsolved mystery is how it feels like there is more “Love Is Blind” dropping every month, but I digress.
October also brings with it the chance to watch Season 1 of “Yellowjackets” (a Showtime hit) for the first time on the Netflix platform, as well as more “Outer Banks” and “The Lincoln Lawyer.” The best bet, however, is the return of Keri Russell.
Top Pick: “The Diplomat” Season 2
Russell returns as U.S. ambassador to the U.K. Kate Wyler in this “The Americans” meets “Homeland” Emmy-nominated hit. Season 1 ended with a massive cliffhanger, so the six-episode Season...

In a world where female filmmakers are consistently making strides, Zoe Saldaña’s comment has become a matter of controversy. The actress has starred in some iconic action blockbusters like Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy, and she recently expressed her concern about the lack of female directors in the action genre.
Zoe Saldana in Special Ops: Lioness | Bosque Ranch Productions
Her statement has drawn significant attention because there are indeed several female directors who are making waves in the industry. Saldaña’s opinion must’ve been in support of women, but not acknowledging their work makes her look ignorant about the subject.

Between 1992 and 1996 in Seattle, a serial bank robber shook the city to its core. Pulling off a staggering 19 heists, he entered the annals of crime as one of the most prolific bank robbers in US history. Dubbed “Hollywood” by the FBI due to his elaborate disguises, the real name of this man was Scott Scurlock. Through it all, he evaded capture, taunting the police in what seemed like a personal game of cat and mouse. His story reads like the pages of a Hollywood thriller.
Directors Stephen Robert Morse and Seth Porges delve behind the headlines in their gripping documentary “How to Rob a Bank”. Beyond the sensational details of each heist, they aim to get to the root of what drove Hollywood—to peer into the mind of this criminal mastermind and find the answers to the age-old question of why. Patrick Swayze was one of a kind. He’s the only actor I can think of who was as comfortable cutting a rug on the dance floor as demolishing a room full of bad guys with his fists of fury. When he passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009, we lost an icon who was never really recognized as the legend he is in his time. In the years since many Patrick Swayze movies have become cult favourites, and with a Road House remake recently a hit, we decided now would be a good time to pick the five best Patrick Swayze movies.

Keanu Reeves has had an interesting career since the 90s and has been labeled one of the bonafide action heroes in Hollywood. Instead of the macho, indestructible type of heroes presented by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, Reeves’s heroes are vulnerable yet are determined to overcome all obstacles.

Keanu Reeves is often known for his badass characters on screen and his kind-hearted nature off-screen. The actor has often won the Internet with his humane nature, which involved gifting his stunt team watches, helping crew members financially, and being respectful to his female co-stars.
However, the Internet’s darling has received one criticism which should have ruined his career. Reeves’ range has been described as limited and he has received criticism that he only plays himself in his film. The John Wick star mentioned that he would have a quote based on the Bill & Ted franchise on his gravestone as he received criticisms for it.

Keanu Reeves had to briefly pause an interview with Stephen Colbert during an appearance on “The Late Show” when the host brought up that “The Matrix” is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The realization hit Reeves, as he went silent for 20 seconds while trying to find the right words to remember the film by.

When you think of the long-running Fox procedural "Bones," what do you think of? Skeletons of every kind — goopy, burned, rotting, frozen, and so on — on display while Emily Deschanel's forensic anthropologist examined them for clues? A will-they-won't-they romance between her character, Temperance Brennan, and David Boreanaz's FBI agent Seeley Booth? That one post-"American Idol" episode where The Gravedigger's head explodes?
By virtue of the show's title alone, it's unlikely that Booth's sharpshooting is the first thing that comes to mind for fans of the series. The character was great at his job, but any number of FBI cool guy antics paled in comparison to Bones' own nitty-gritty investigative work. Still, Boreanaz apparently worked hard behind the scenes to make sure Booth's status as a former Army sniper was believable, even going so far as to train with the show's police technical adviser, according to Paul Ruditis' book "Bones: The Official Companion.

From vampire noir to Bin Laden, Point Break to Detroit, the first woman to win an Oscar for best director has never pulled her punches
Watching new Jeff Nichols release The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy as 60s Chicago greasers, I was reminded of two other movies: László Benedek’s 1953 Marlon Brando vehicle The Wild One, explicitly cited as an inspiration, and The Loveless, the 1981 feature debut of Kathryn Bigelow, the American film-maker (b.1951) who would go on to become the first woman to win a best director Oscar with her 2008 war drama The Hurt Locker.
A symphony of leather-clad posing (with just a touch of Kenneth Anger), The Loveless was a staple of the late-night circuit in the 80s, often on a double bill with David Lynch’s Eraserhead. Things seem to be moving pretty quickly on her new film, following the scrapping of Kathryn Bigelow’s previous Netflix project.
After a protracted period of development, it was with some dismay that we learned back in April that Netflix wouldn’t be moving forward with Kathryn Bigelow’s planned film Aurora. As you likely know, there’s been a change in leadership at the streaming platform’s film division and Bigelow’s project – her first since 2017’s Detroit – was deemed as no longer suitable due to budgetary reasons.
On the bright side though, Netflix quickly announced that the Point Break and Zero Dark Thirty filmmaker would be directing a different project with it, and thankfully, things seem to be running much more smoothly this time.

Katheryn Bigelow will be getting back in the director’s chair for the first time since 2017’s historical drama Detroit. Bigelow was known for some beloved titles in the 90s, including Point Break and a movie that we’ve featured on a video about films that are hard to find — Strange Days. Bigelow reached new success when she directed The Hurt Locker in 2008, which would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. She would then follow that film up with Zero Dark Thirty. Deadline reports that not only is Bigelow directing a new film for Netflix, but she may lock down two stars for her film with Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson.
