The Sixth Sense may have been a monster hit, but it inadvertently killed its own studio brand! Here’s how Disney’s mega-hit ended Hollywood Pictures!
Twenty-five years after its debut, much has been written about The Sixth Sense and its impact. One thing overlooked is how almost no one in Hollywood expected this supernatural thriller to make an impact. Indeed, in their annual Summer Movie Preview issue in 1999, Entertainment Weekly didn’t even mention Sense.
Sure, it had a big-name star in Bruce Willis, but it was an odd film from a completely unknown writer/director being released in August, traditionally the dumping ground for bad movies. It debuted to $26.6 million, then the highest August release. Thanks to good reviews, strong word of mouth and, of course, that now-famous twist ending, Sense became the second highest-grossing movie of 1999, $672.8 million worldwide. It earned multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and director,...

A little while back, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. This summer, the Mouse House released an uncommonly bold MCU movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, which sported an R-rating, and has done blockbuster business. Many are wondering if perhaps this could have the way for Disney to tackle some adult fare, but it wouldn’t be the first time, and maybe now is the time to bring back Touchstone Pictures.
So, what’s Touchstone Pictures...

Following the death of Richard Simmons, Hollywood is mourning the loss of a positive figure who impacted many lives.
One such tribute came from Pauly Shore, who previously developed an unauthorized biopic of the late fitness legend months before he died at age 76, which Simmons objected to at the time.
“I just got word like everyone else that the beautiful Richard Simmons has passed,” he began in an Instagram post on Friday. “I hope you’re at peace and twinkling up in the heavens.

Pauly Shore said he “was up all night crying” due to Richard Simmons continuing to publicly distance himself from a biopic that would star Shore as the fitness guru.
“I just read that a man that I don’t know is writing my bio pic starring Pauly Shore,” Simmons wrote on his verified Facebook page earlier this week. “I do not approve this movie. I am in talks with major studios to create my own bio pic with some help. Wait for this movie.”
Simmons previously said that he was not involved with the biopic and didn’t give Shore “permission” for it, right after it was announced that a feature film about the fitness icon, backed by the Wolper Organization, was in development.
“You guys, I was up all night crying regarding Richard Simmons’ tweet,” Shore wrote on his Instagram Thursday. “Richard, how do you not approve of this movie?...

As far as '90s comedies go, "Encino Man" is up there as one of the seemingly forgotten flicks that die-hard fans are thirsting with nostalgia over. The film helped establish Pauly Shore as a genuine movie star and it certainly doesn't hurt that both Sean Astin ("The Lord of the Rings") and Brendan Fraser ("The Mummy") have gone on to become cherished actors in their own right. It's an of-its-time comedy that remains loved to this day. But could a sequel be on the horizon?
For those who may need a refresher, director Les Mayfield's 1992 film centers on Dave (Astin) who uncovers a caveman frozen in a block of ice while digging a hole for a swimming pool. With the help of his friend Stoney (Shore), Dave moves the caveman (Fraser) to their garage where he thaws out and comes back to life. The duo then attempts to...

Pauly Shore is absolutely committed to the idea that he is 1980s fitness icon Richard Simmons — the “Son in Law” star is portraying Simmons in two separate projects.
First, Shore will be seen in “The Court Jester,” a short film directed and written by Jake Lewis that premieres January 19 at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. A teaser trailer with Simmons (Shore) sharing words of wisdom to an overweight production assistant hit YouTube on Wednesday; the full short film will be made available on the same platform following its Sundance premiere.
Watch the teaser here:
And now, Shore will star as Simmons in a feature-length biopic currently in development at The Wolper Organization, a subsidiary of Warner Bros.; the two projects are unrelated. Additional casting is underway for that film, which was also announced this morning.

Brendan Fraser is accustomed to being underestimated Until recently, he was never looked at as that kind of actor – the kind that’s considered a major contender during awards season. That all changed thanks to his seminal Oscar-winning performance in “The Whale” (from director Darren Aronofsky). But the truth is that he’s been a quality actor for a long time, and if his Big Moment wasn’t necessarily inevitable, it was perhaps overdue.
The actor who was born on December 3, 1968 in Indianapolis, Indiana has been best known until now for starring in the “The Mummy” franchise. But Fraser has been a consistent presence on screens big and small for three decades, going back to his days headlining agreeably lowbrow comedies like “Encino Man” from 1992 and “Airheads” in [94. He also had a role in a Best Picture Oscar winner (2004’s “Crash”) and a pair of dramas that drew universal critical praise (“Gods and Monsters” from 1998 and “The Quiet American” from 2002). If Fraser ran into a bit of a slump over the past 15 years or so,...

After saying that he’d be very picky about his next role after winning an Oscar, Brendan Fraser has found it. He will star in “Rental Family” for Searchlight Pictures and from filmmaker Hikari, best known for her work on “Beef.”
Fraser in “Rental Family” will star as a down-and-out actor living in Tokyo who is hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental family company providing professional stand-in services.
Hikari has been developing “Rental Family” since 2019, and she also co-wrote the film with Stephen Blahut. The film will begin principal photography this spring in Japan. No release date has been announced.
Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev of Sight Unseen, which produced this year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner “A Thousand and One,” are producing “Rental Family.” Hikari and Shin Yamaguchi, who produced her prior feature “37 Seconds” in 2019, will also produce. Blahut and Tomo Koizumi will executive produce.

Brendan Fraser's richly deserved comeback crested last March when he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." It was the end of a long, hard road that began in the 2000s with a messy divorce, an alleged sexual assault at the groping hands of the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and a deep depression caused by the death of his mother. Fraser had gone from being one of the most exciting talents of his generation to a C-level movie star.
That generation included Chris O'Donnell, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck, all three of whom co-starred with Fraser in the 1992 antisemitism drama "School Ties." They were all often in competition for the same roles, but they eventually made their own way in the industry. Before his career and personal life were thrown off course, Brendan Fraser was a promising leading man throughout the 1990s. Now, Fraser is back where he should’ve been all along, sharing the screen and the spotlight with other big-name actors. His small role in the cult classic Now and Then isn’t his most memorable performance, but Fraser’s presence in the movie is noteworthy because of who he replaced for the character. Leonardo DiCaprio was set to be in Now and Then before dropping out. Nearly three decades later and after wildly different trajectories, Fraser and DiCaprio will share screen time in one of 2023’s most highly anticipated films.

Brendan Fraser is finally an Oscar winning actor, deservedly so for his performance in The Whale. The outpouring of love and recognition for Fraser in the last year has been heartwarming because he’s always been great, since his powerhouse debuts in 1992’s Encino Man and School Ties. His specialty, it would turn out, would be in acting opposite CGI visual effects.

From the late ‘90s to early ‘00s, Fraser appeared in several movies with co-stars who would be added in later with computers. It was already becoming a common practice after Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park, and hasn’t stopped with the Marvel movies. Nobody ever did it better than Fraser though, and these three roles are the proof.

One of the 90s’ most unique high school comedies, Encino Man, is currently getting a surge in recognition, and it’s pretty rad! There has probably never been such a rejoiced and universally pleased result of two Academy Award wins than the great comeback stories of Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan. Both have shown great humility and gratefulness and knowing what they have dealt with, both giving genuinely human performances last year is nothing short of amazing. What’s even more impressive is both had been co-stars in this wacky comedy, and people have been gushing over the reunion.

The Vietnamese-American actor landed his first on-screen credit in the first outing of the Harrison Ford-led franchise in 1984. Shortly after, he appeared in the late director Richard Donner’s 1985 adventure classic.
In the decades proceeding, Quan was forced into a career hiatus because of the lack of roles for Asian actors.
Now 51, the Everything Everywhere All at Once star won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday (12 March).
While speaking to Variety in a new interview about his “surreal” win and Hollywood comeback, Quan further reflected upon the harder years when he “couldn’t get a job”.

Pauly Shore is sending love to some former Encino Man co-stars following their Oscar wins, although he did leave out the part about nugs, chillin’ and grindage.
In a tweet posted the day after the Oscars, Pauly Shore praised his Encino Man co-stars Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan, who won statues for Best Actor (The Whale) and Best Supporting Actor (Everything Everywhere All at Once), respectively. “…what I Really loved is that my old buddies from back in the day, Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan, took home the Oscars! Never quit on your dreams.”
Pauly Shore has no beef with Jimmy Kimmel, who made light fun of Shore’s career during his Oscars monologue, saying, “Two actors from Encino Man are nominated for Oscars…What an incredible night it must be for the two of you, and what a very difficult night for Pauly Shore. Maybe it’s time to reboot Bio-Dome.

Pauly Shore has responded to one of the most devastating jokes delivered by Jimmy Kimmel during his Oscars monologue on Sunday night after the host compared the comedian to his former co-stars and two of the night’s biggest winners, Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan.
“Two actors from Encino Man are nominated for Oscars,” Kimmel quipped, referring to Fraser and Quan, who were up for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. “What an incredible night this must be for the two of you and what a very difficult night for Pauly Shore.”
The ’90s comedy fixture posted his reaction the following day via Twitter, sharing, “I loved it.” He then redirected the attention back to his past scenemates by adding, “But what I Really loved is that my old buddies from back in the day, Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan, took home the Oscars! Jimmy Kimmel Live! executive producer Molly McNearney has revealed that her husband Jimmy Kimmel is “obsessed” with correctly pronouncing names.
During Sunday (12 March) night’s live broadcast of the 95th Oscars, the late-night host confused certain viewers when he introduced Rihanna in his opening monologue.
“Rihanna is here,” Kimmel announced, saying her name with a hard “a” – ree-Ann-uh – as opposed to the more commonly used “ree-ah-nuh”.
“It felt funny to people,” McNearney told Variety of Kimmel’s pronunciation of the Oscar-nominated singer’s moniker, however, clarifying that “that is the way you pronounce Rihanna”.
“Now America knows how to pronounce her name, although they won’t. They’ll just assume Jimmy f***ed up, but no, he did not!” she said.
"Jimmy is obsessed with pronouncing people's names correctly," she added. "There is a guy at the show whose job is to find the pronunciations. We always find...

The awkward Andrew Garfield gag at the Oscars has been addressed by the ceremony’s producer.
During the event on Sunday (12 March), host Jimmy Kimmel said there would be no repeat of last year’s slap as he had assembled a crack team to prevent such “violence”.
“You’re gonna have to do battle with Michelle Yeoh before you get to me,” he said, while also listing Creed III actor-director Michael B Jordan, Fabelmans director Steve Spielberg and Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal.
Each actor reacted accordingly, to big cheers from the crowd, but when Kimmel said: “You are gonna have to tangle with Spider-Man!”, the camera cut to Andrew Garfield, who awkwardly grimaced in his seat.
The crowd, who had been cheering each actor, appeared confused, and applauded after a delay. Viewers watching at home reacted to the crowd’s “nasty” reaction. It’s been claimed that the assumption was that Tom Holland,...

If there's one thing I know for certain, it's that the makers of the 1992 teen comedy "Encino Man" — about an unfrozen caveman who becomes the most popular kid in high school — knew for a fact that one day, two of their stars would win Academy Awards on the exact same night for films about fatphobia and multiverses.
Yes, that much was obvious. Just like it was obvious that the kid who asked if you're supposed to eat lobster poop in "Mystic Pizza" and the basketball player who got grossed out by a Nosferatu in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie would one day win Oscars for co-writing a film about a mathematics super genius, and that the unnamed street punk who asked if his fellow hooligans preferred regular or menthol cigarettes in the first "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie would one day win an Oscar for playing a racist cop in a film about billboards.

Oscar producers have admitted Jimmy Kimmel made a Scientology joke about Tom Cruise as he decided not to attend.
Kimmel hosted the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday (12 March). During his opening monologue he poked fun at Avatar director James Cameron, last year’s Will Smith slap and, in what was deemed a “low blow” by viewers, the poor box office performance of Babylon.
He also alerted the audience to the fact that Cruise, whose Top Gun: Maverick received six nominations, was not in attendance.
According to Entertainment Tonight, this was due to the fact that he was busy shooting Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part II in the UK.
Kimmel addressed Top Gun sequel’s box office success in 2021, calling it “the movie that saved the movies”.
He then made a Scientology quip, stating: “Everyone loved Top Gun – everybody. I mean, Tom Cruise with his shirt off in that beach football scene.

Paul Sorvino’s family have called out the Academy Awards for not including the Goodfellas star in its “In Memoriam” segment.
During the ceremony on Sunday (12 March), Lenny Kravitz performed “Calling All Angels” as a screen behind him showed a montage of notable figures from the world of film who have died in the past year.
These included Olivia Newton John, Ray Liotta, Angela Lansbury, Jean-Luc Godard and Irene Cara.
Other stars to be featured in the segment were Burt Bacharach, Nichelle Nichols, Kirstie Alley and Racquel Welch.
Noticeably missing from the tribute was Paul Sorvino, the character actor and opera singer known for his menacing performances in movies such as Goodfellas, The Gambler, and Romeo + Juliet.
The actor died of natural causes in July 2022 at the age of 83.

Like most people, I have a great reverence for Brendan Fraser. I have no qualms admitting "Encino Man" is one of my earliest comfort films, as is "Airheads," and I'm a staunch defender of his performance in Henry Selick's "Monkeybone." Yes, I too would also "honk if I'd rather be watching the 1999 cinematic masterpiece 'The Mummy' starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz," upon seeing the viral SuperYaki bumper sticker in the wild, but I can also sing the dolphin song from "Bedazzled" by heart. Brendan Fraser is a performer I have loved for so long I cannot remember when he wasn't one of my favorite actors. Knowing that this multi-faceted performer has won the Oscar for Best Actor feels like something worth celebrating with the same intensity as watching the underdog team win the Super Bowl, but Fraser's win comes wrapped in the violent, grotesque embrace of Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale.

Brendan Fraser is the man of the moment.
At the Oscars ceremony on Sunday night (12 March), the actor, 54, completed his career comeback with a Best Actor win for his role as a man with life-threatening obesity in Darren Aronofsky’s divisive drama The Whale.
Fraser’s portrayal had previously earned him standing ovations at film festivals in Venice and Toronto, and saw him receive the best reviews of his career. Read The Independent’s take here.
His recent success comes after some years out of the spotlight. Fraser first broke out in the early 1990s with the comedy Encino Man and the drama School Ties, before going on to become a household name for George of the Jungle and The Mummy trilogy.

Oscars 2023: Everything Everywhere All at Once triumphs with major sweepThe full list of winners
It is a truism to say that the Academy loves a comeback, but at this year’s Oscars it reached a fever pitch: all four acting awards were won by screen veterans who, until now, had never won – or even been nominated for – an Academy Award.
There was Brendan Fraser, who broke out in roles such as a reanimated Neanderthal in Encino Man (1992) and a lovable woodwose in George of the Jungle (1997), before cementing himself as the defining hunk of the 90s with his windswept explorer in 1999’s The Mummy.

“I’m happy to see Nicole Kidman has finally been released from that abandoned AMC where she has been held captive for almost two full years…. And thank you for encouraging people who were already at the movie theater to go to the movie theater.”

Ke Huy Quan had mostly disappeared from Hollywood for over two decades, dispirited by the lack of on-camera work for Asian Americans. He returned in a big way, winning the supporting actor Oscar to cap an inspiring comeback story.
Quan accepted the trophy Sunday night for his role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” becoming just the second Asian winner ever in the supporting actor category, joining Haing S. Ngor for “The Killing Fields” in 1984.

As his name was announced, Quan rose and hugged co-stars Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis, who won supporting actress honors after him. He clasped his hands to his mouth.

Jimmy Kimmel opened the 95th Oscars Sunday night with only the mildest of jabs at stars including nominees Austin Butler and Steven Spielberg, as well as Nicole Kidman’s ever-present AMC ad.
His genuinely funny monologue didn’t skimp on references to Will Smith’s infamous Oscar slap last year, with Kimmel joking that anyone who committed violence at the awards show would “be given the Best Actor Oscar and allowed to make a 19-minute speech.”
After parachuting in as if dropped off by Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick” character, Kimmel quipped, “I’m happy to see that Nicole Kidman has finally been released from that abandoned AMC where she has been held captive for almost two full years now. It’s good to have you back. And thank you for encouraging people who are already at the movie theater to go to the movies.”

Speaking to Rolling Stone ahead of his third Oscar-hosting stint, Jimmy Kimmel relayed that him and his late-night writing team had been putting in hours and hours of prep work for cinema’s biggest night.
Well, it finally came. And Kimmel didn’t disappoint.
The Jimmy Kimmel Live! funnyman kicked off his Oscars monologue with a Top Gun: Maverick bit that saw Tom Cruise’s Maverick eject him from his fighter plane and onto the Dolby Theatre stage. After crew members removed his parachute, the comic got down to business.

Jerrod Carmichael
Jerrod Carmichael
California’s new pay transparency law went into effect Jan. 1, and the Golden Globe Awards host celebrated by roasting his bosses for the night and telling the world that he was paid $500,000 for his services. Not only did the declaration raise eyebrows — it’s 30 times the typical pay for emceeing the Oscars — but it undoubtedly angered anyone involved with keeping these pricey telecasts going amid steep ratings declines. Comedy reps will be quoting Carmichael’s alleged payday in hosting negotiations for years to come.

What was in the water on the set of Encino Man? In an awards cycle where acceptance speeches bounced from sincere to silly to crass, these onetime co-stars stayed the course with wet, wet gratitude. And it’s not like anybody begrudges them!

Remember the “McConaussaince” of 2013? If you’re reading this website, of course you do. Gold Derby founder Tom O’Neil referred to it as the time when Matthew McConaughey went from “surfer dude to serious actor” and was justly rewarded by the Academy Awards for his gut-wrenching performance in the docu-drama “Dallas Buyers Club.” A decade later, awards watchers are in the midst of another well-publicized career redemption, this time for Brendan Fraser. Hmm, how does “Fraserssaince” sound?
Following a breakout decade in the 1990s that featured instant classic performances in “Encino Man” (1992), “George of the Jungle” (1997) and “The Mummy” (1999), Fraser’s career experienced several setbacks in the 2000s. “I needed to take some personal time in my career and life,” the actor revealed in a recent interview with our senior editor Christopher Rosen. But that personal time ended last year with he got cast in A24’s “The Whale.”

Following his long break from Hollywood, Ke Huy Quan relied on Michelle Yeoh to guide him on the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” set.
The Oscar-nominated actor explained how Yeoh, 60, helped him navigate the filming process in this week’s issue of People magazine.
“She guided me. I haven’t done this for a long time. I don’t think we could have done this movie without her,” says Quan, who starred alongside Yeoh in the reality-bending movie.

The film marks Quan’s grand return to acting after taking a decades-long hiatus from the industry. The last time the actor made a mark on the big screen was nearly 40 years ago as a child star in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”.
Quan, 51, has been accumulating many trophies this award show season.
