Enrico Lo Verso was the only member of the main cast to be a professional actor.

Among the candidates for Antonio's role there was also Massimo Troisi. He himself called Gianni Amelio after reading the screenplay and saying that he was interested. But Mario Cecchi Gori already had a contract with Troisi and didn't let him.

The producer Angelo Rizzoli Jr. wanted Antonio Banderas to play Antonio's role, but Gianni Amelio refused to cast him.
