Bloody Disgusting has learned the sad news this week that Waxwork (1988) director Anthony Hickox, who was prolific in the ’80s and ’90s, has passed away at the age of 64 years old.
Deadline reports, “Hickox had spent his recent years in Romania, where police found him dead last week at his house in Bucharest after friends had reported not seeing him for some time, according to close friend and InterTalent Rights Group CEO Jonathan Shalit.”
In addition to Waxwork, a favorite among the staff here at Bloody Disgusting, Anthony Hickox also directed the film’s only sequel, Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992).
Hickox also directed a slew of other horror movies around the same time, including the Bruce Campbell-starring Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989), Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), and Warlock: The Armageddon (1993), as well as the 1990s films Full Eclipse (1993), Payback (1995), Invasion of Privacy (1996), and Storm Catcher (1999).

Sad news today as it’s been reported that genre director Anthony Hickox recently died at the age of 64. The under-appreciated director is best known for helming Waxwork, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Warlock: The Armageddon, and more.
Filmmaking was in Anthony Hickox’s blood from day one. He was born to Douglas Hickox, who directed Theatre of Blood and Zulu Dawn, and Anne V. Coates, the Oscar-winning editor of Lawrence of Arabia. After initially working as a club promoter in London, Hickox moved to Los Angeles to become a writer and director. His first feature film was Waxwork, quickly followed by Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat. He went on to helm Waxwork II: Lost in Time, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Full Eclipse, Warlock: The Armageddon, and more.

Lost in Time: One Family’s Decades-Long Battle Against Injustice
How do you measure lost time? At once elegiac and lyrical, Garrett Bradley’s documentary Time explores this question through the disarmingly intimate lens of one family’s battle to free their father from prison. A sister film to Ava DuVernay’s masterful 13th, Time tackles systemic injustice in the prison-industrial complex with similar fervor—except this time, it’s personal: a saga of love and loss closer in tone to Barry Jenkin’s If Beale Street Could Talk. Mixing crisp B&W vérité footage with archival MiniDV tapes—sifted from 100+ hours of home-movie diaries, filmed by the family so that their jailed father could glimpse moments missed—Bradley’s film moves, challenges and ultimately uplifts its audience.…...

Weezer’s latest music video sees them auditioning to be the opening act for none other than Wyld Stallyns, the band fronted by Bill S. Preston and Ted Theodore Logan in “Bill & Ted Face the Music.”
Their new song “Beginning of the End” is just one track on a soundtrack album in support of the film, which also features songs by Cold War Kids, Mastodon, Fidlar, Lamb of God and a few originals by Wyld Stallyns themselves.
Weezer’s track, which you can hear above, is about overcoming insecurity and taking the stage even though you’re “so scared,” and it fits well with the themes of “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” which grapples with the two heroes still working to fulfill their rock and roll destiny even decades after they went on their excellent adventure and bogus journey.

What better way to celebrate the first Bill & Ted movie in 29 years than with a band that took the Nineties by storm?
“My head is spinning, it’s the beginning of the end,” Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo sings in the hook of just-released song “Beginning of the End.” The band whipped up the new tune for the third installment of the franchise — aptly titled Bill & Ted Face the Music — which United Artists Releasing will release on August 28th. Record label 10K Projects will drop the soundtrack on the same day.

Weezer has unveiled the first song from the next installment of “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” The song “Beginning Of The End (Wyld Stallyns Edit)” soundtracks “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” which opens on Aug. 28 in select theaters.
Wyld Stallyns, the fictional band of Theodore “Ted” Logan (Keanu Reeves) and Bill Preston Esq. (Alex Winters) returns in this third film from the franchise, only now the stoner buddies are married (not to each other) with children and they have one last mission: to find and record the song that will save music and unite the world. They have 78 minutes to do so.
As they travel throughout history on their quest, they encounter musical notables like Big Black Delta, Mastodon and Lamb of God, all of whom appear on the soundtrack.

Mark Bridges with Joker costumes
Mark Bridges film career began, as so many have, rather inauspicously. His debut was a now forgotten horror film called Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992) but there's no keeping talent like his down... though it never hurts to attach yourself straight away to a future god-level auteur like Paul Thomas Anderson. Bridges was on board for Anderson's feature debut Hard Eight (1996) and the celebrated auteur wisely never let go of him thereafter. Inbetween Anderson films (and on them in point of fact) Bridges established himself as a world class costume designer of tremendous versatility, with a gift for not just memorable clothing but character-building.
His latest film, Joker, became his most widely viewed work and then an Academy favourite. We had a chance to talk to the two-time Oscar winner this past week about his design process, his favourites from his own filmography,...

There are certain horror films you just love. Weird, offbeat, horrible puzzle boxes that, by all rights, have no logical reason to exist, and yet there they are. And then, there’s Beyond the Door (1974), an Italian / American co-produced quasi-Exorcist treatise that burns down that particular sacred house, stomps on the ashes, and pisses on the embers before speeding off in its Ferrari. If you found The Exorcist too restrained, we may have just become best friends.
Beyond the Door is also known as Chi Sei?, Who Are You?, Behind the Door, The Devil Within Her (not to be confused with the Joan Collins vs. satanic little person shocker) and various other titles it was given in an effort, I’m assuming, to avoid Warner Brothers’ legal department (they can’t catch us if they can’t find us!). Yesterday, The A.V. Club reported on the return of Vestron Video with a newly re-mastered Blu-Ray release of Blood Diner. The late ’80s provided a veritable potpourri for horror film fanatics. Slashers had petered out, and filmmakers were keen on exploring other avenues, everything from a parasitic drug slug (Brain Damage) to possession (The Unholy), and all points in-between. Of course, mileage may vary, and many have fallen through the cracks or are best forgotten. Possibly one of the oddest of the bunch is Anthony Hickox’s Waxwork (1988), a goofball mixture of Hammer and Amicus brought kicking and screaming into the modern era with a touch o’ teen comedy sensibility. And in horror, odd never hurts—and sometimes it even helps create an unassuming delight such as this.
Produced and distributed by Vestron Pictures, who scored big the previous year with the terrifying Dirty Dancing, Waxwork was given a limited release in June in the Us and the rest of the world the following year. Made for $1,500,000, it only returned $800,000 domestically.

Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without a heavily tinseled tree, a tipple before midday and Gremlins on the telly at some point during the day.
The Joe Dante-directed black cult comedy sees protagonist Billy Peltzer being gifted with Gizmo, a cute furry Mogwai discovered by his inventor father in a mysterious Chinatown antique store.
Of course the creature comes with three special instructions which, if not adhered to, result in the spawning of grizzly Gremlins hell-bent on havoc.
The Steven Spielberg-produced movie - which is
currently being fast-tracked by Warner Bros for a remake - celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this year, and here's what the main cast members got up to after the movie's success:
1. Zach Galligan
Zach Galligan plays William 'Billy' Peltzer who becomes enthralled by his unusual Christmas gift - yet careless with the three golden Gizmo rules.

While I know most tend to associate actor Zach Galligan with the movie 'Gremlins,' for me growing up I was always a bigger fan of his portrayal of Mark in the 'Waxwork' movies. After all, he got to fight all the classic Universal monsters, go up against the Waxwork proprietor played by the great David Warner and was friends (and potentially more?) with mega-babes Michelle Johnson (China) and Deborah Foreman (Sarah). I've always had a great deal of affection for the first 'Waxwork' because not only is it a perfect blend of horror and comedy, but because it was also an all out monster mash that didn't skimp out on the monsters or the gore. Writer/director Anthony Hickox (who also later helmed 'Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth,' 'Warlock: Armageddon,' and 'Sundown: A Vampire In Retreat') teamed up once more with...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as David Addison in Looper
In Looper (opening Friday), Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a contract killer who rubs out people that the mob throws back in time ... until he himself is tossed back through the portal looking like Bruce Willis and he is unable to shoot himself because he was a huuuuuge Moonlighting fan. At least I think that's the plot.
The point is, time travel is a tricky topic for movies, and lots of times it gets botched. Here are some of the worst reasons we've ever seen for someone to get their Back to the Future on.
1. To Bang Your Own Great-Great-Grandmother (Kate & Leopold)
Wait, I banged Who? (Meg Ryan is confused.)
Ugh. This movie is wretched. I wish I could travel back in time and slap myself in the face for sitting through it on a flight to the west coast. (Added bonus: double miles!) But...

Waxwork II: Lost in Time There are many horror films in my collection that I absolutely loathe. I love Dario Argento’s work, yet hated and cannot stomach his version of The Phantom of the Opera. I hated the follow-up to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake “The Beginning”. It almost insults fans of the series with how bland and generic it was. I loved Robert Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror”. However, for the first time I could not stand a Tarantino film. I despised “Death Proof”. I realize some would argue with me on that last one. I could talk all day about the horror films I hate, but my all time least favorite horror film goes to…
Waxwork II: Lost in Time is my least favorite horror film of all time. I loved the original. The original film was such a great genre movie. It took place in a wax...

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...
