"Solar Opposites" is back for season 5, and the show is as funny as ever. The adult animated sitcom created by Mike McMahan and disgraced animator Justin Roiland continues to blend the sci-fi lunacy of "Rick and Morty" with classic family sitcom tropes without veering too much into a single territory, keeping audiences on their toes as they watch. The stories about this alien family reluctantly coming to love planet Earth despite how much they complain about it, choosing time and time again to stay here when it's a detriment to their mission, are funny. Still, it's in the B-plots where the show truly shines.
The first of these B-plots is The Wall, a recurring segment taking place in a terrarium of one of the alien kids, who continuously shrinks random people against their will when he feels they wrong him, and puts them in the terrarium. After a while, The Wall became a full society,...

Is “Batman: The Animated Series” the most beloved, well, animated series of the ’90s to not yet receive a reboot? Warner Animation stablemates “Tiny Toon Adventures” and “Animaniacs” have been revived for streamers; when “King of the Hill” comes back (supposedly in 2025), both of Mike Judge’s most popular shows will have made their return; and “The Simpsons” never actually left the air. Now, on the heels of “X-Men ’97” comes “Batman: Caped Crusader” — not an actual continuation of the Warner-produced, Fox-aired Batman saga, but sort of a long-overdue spiritual successor to what many consider the definitive non-comics portrayal of the character. The strongest connection to the previous show: This one is also spearheaded by Bruce Timm, who cocreated the earlier series and remained a dominant force in its development.
This makes “Caped Crusader” both a major event and a potential disappointment; maybe that’s why it’s airing...

When revisiting stuff from your childhood, sometimes you have to call upon the magical power of nostalgia to distract yourself from how truly childish — or downright terrible — it is. Transformers, for example, is the dumbest cartoon ever made, and Nickelodeon’s Doug couldn’t be anymore dull.
There are some kids’ cartoons, though, that have so many layers that they only get funnier as you age. Here are seven of them…
6 Ren & Stimpy
Ren & Stimpy is probably the first cartoon people think of when they’re talking about kids’ cartoons aimed at adults since it’s filled with all sorts of gross and suggestive moments, particularly when involving the relationship between its two leads.
5 Rocko’s Modern Life
Like Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life had adult jokes that went over kids’ heads, but there’s another layer to the show that appeals to adults, too. Nearly every story is...

Have you ever noticed how Tommy from Rugrats sounds just like one of the Powerpuff Girls? Or that Scooby-Doo and Astro from The Jetsons speak very similar dog languages?
Hollywood’s voice-acting community is full of really talented people who can churn out a bunch of different voices, but that doesn’t mean they don’t occasionally have characters that end up sounding exactly alike (it doesn’t help that this group of performers is relatively small).
To that end, here are 10 sets of cartoon characters whose voices are practically interchangeable…
10 Scooby-Doo and Astro
The Jetsons, which debuted as a prime-time show in 1962, is considered a classic today, but it didn’t gain that status until the 1980s when it re-debuted on Saturday mornings with new episodes. And so, when Scooby-Doo came along in 1969, six years after The Jetsons was canceled, voice actor Don Messick thought nothing of re-using Astro...

Perhaps the most overlooked series in the "Star Trek" canon ("Short Treks" and "Very Short Treks" notwithstanding), "Star Trek: The Animated Series" may be accepted as the final two years in the U.S.S. Enterprise's five-year mission. "Star Trek: Tas" debuted on September 8, 1973, four years after the cancelation of "Star Trek," to reunite the original cast and writers to explore Starlfeet's adventures in a 30-minute, animated format. The animation was provided by Filmation, the studio that had previously overseen multiple Batman and Superman cartoons, Archie cartoons, "Gilligan's Island" spinoffs, and which would go on to produce the ultra-popular "Fat Albert," "The Groovy Goolies," "BraveStarr," and "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe." Filmation shows were popular among kids, but their animations tended to be stiff and inexpressive. The most prominent feature of "Star Trek: Tas" is how static it looks.

Netflix has included another animated series in its catalog and this time, and this time it’s the rebirth of an extremely nostalgic franchise, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Lara Croft has been an insanely popular character and she deserves all kinds of adaptations.
However, the recent animated series teased by Netflix has received some criticism due to its Japanese-inspired art style. While it looks good and has good action scenes, you can’t help but shake off the feeling that it is trying to imitate anime.

"The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" is likely not remembered by many people, except for Billy Crystal himself. The variety/talk show ran from January 30 through February 27 in 1982, lasting a grand total of five episodes. Crystal was already a successful comedian and beloved figure in the industry thanks to the popularity of his 1970s stand-up work and his role in the 1977 sitcom "Soap," so he had connections. He was able to secure guest appearances from many of his famous comedian friends, including Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Robin Williams, and John Candy for the debut episode. Subsequent guests included Morgan Fairchild, the Manhattan Transfer, Nell Carter, Shelley Duvall, Cindy Williams, Al Jarreau, and Smokey Robinson.
"The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" fell right in between "Soap" and "Saturday Night Live" on Crystal's professional timeline, and it might be considered something of a dip in his career. The show was canceled after only two episodes aired,...

Van Partible's animated series "Johnny Bravo" debuted on the Cartoon Network on July 14, 1997. It was one of four new shows that Cartoon Network premiered in 1997 and 1998 that served as a declaration for a new creator-forward direction the network was taking. "Johnny Bravo" debuted alongside Genndy Tartakovsky's "Dexter's Laboratory," David Feiss' "Cow and Chicken," and Craig McCracken's "The Powerpuff Girls." In 1999, that lineup would be complemented by "Ed, Edd n Eddy," and "Courage the Cowardly Dog." These shows were all quirky and idiosyncratic and attracted a generation of fans.
"Johnny Bravo" was about a barrel-chested, Elvis-voiced lug who lived with his mother and attempted to find love in the big city. His buffoonery and vanity, however, usually kept him single. Johnny was played by prolific voice actor Jeff Bennett, who has been acting professionally since 1991. Van Partible had been working on a version of the show as early...

The Dcau is one of the most popular and beloved DC adaptations of all time and includes some of the most critically acclaimed animated shows such as Batman: The Animated Series. Warner Bros. has been in the news quite a bit this past year. Between talks of possible industry-shaking mergers and the current chaos surrounding "Coyote vs. Acme," it's starting to seem like the best course of action might be to call up whoever it was that let Ryan Gosling do a photoshoot on top of the Warner Bros. water tower, and kindly ask that they let the Animaniacs loose to cause a little chaos and release the movie.
For the somehow uninitiated, the Animaniacs consist of the Warner Brothers Yakko (Rob Paulsen), Wakko (Jess Harnell), and the Warner Sister, Dot (Tress MacNeille), who ruled the '90s with their animated variety sketch series which included shorts centered on equally beloved characters like Pinky (Paulsen) and the Brain (Maurice Lamarche). At the start of Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's 31st-century sci-fi sitcom "Futurama," the alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) sounded a little bit more like a drunken vagrant. He slurred his speech more and seemed less able to concentrate. As the show progressed, Bender became more self-assured, like the guy at the bar who — after his fourth shot of Jim Beam — is 100% confident he could thrash the bouncer. Bender became egotistical in addition to being a drunken criminal. On DVD commentary tracks, the makers of "Futurama" have said that Bender, in being a robot, allowed them more explicit depictions of violence and vice; a human character cannot drink a gallon of rotgut whiskey and smoke four cigars simultaneously, but a robot can. The Fox censors are weird.

Voice actor Maurice Lamarche is one of the preeminent elder statesmen of his craft. He started his career in stand up, finding he was a talented mimic, moving into animation in 1980. He appeared in hit shows like "Inspector Gadget" and "Transformers," really hitting his stride in 1985 playing Ego Spengler in "The Real Ghostbusters." He cycled through the KidsWB canon aggressively in the late '80s and early '90s, appearing in "Taz-Mania," "Batman: The Animated Series," "Tiny Toon Adventures," "Freakazoid!," and "Animaniacs" wherein he employed his spot-on Orson Welles impersonation to voice the power-hungry mouse the Brain. His largest sampling of voice caricatures came from his work on the 1994 series "The Critic," where he voiced celebrities ranging from William Shatner to Elizabeth Taylor (but only when she was belching).
In 1999, Lamarche became one of the regulars on Mat Groening's and David X. Cohen's sci-fi sitcom "Futurama" where he played Kif,...

Created by Ton Ruegger and overseen by executive producer Steven Spielberg, "Tiny Toon Adventures" debuted in September of 1990, marking a sea change in mainstream TV animation. "Tiny Toons," tapping into 1990s trends toward self-awareness, regularly addressed its own status as a cartoon show, and the characters would frequently give side-eyes to the audience, extract scripts on camera, or even exit their animation cels to cause havoc for the animators. The show's regular obliteration of the fourth wall reflected — and guided — the prevailing winking sarcasm of the 1990s, making it (and I am not exaggerating) a vital and definitive text of the decade. It's no coincidence that it landed the same year as Richard Linklater's "Slacker."
"Tiny Toons" was striking, funny, and launched an entire series of notable Spielberg-backed 1990s cartoons like "Animaniacs," "Histeria!," and "Freakazoid!"
The characters on "Tiny Toons" were largely all distaff "youth" counterparts of established Looney Tunes characters.

When Bender (John Dimaggio) belches on "Futurama," it's typically accompanied by a plume of flame. The more Bender drinks, the larger the plume. A massive beer keg, which Bender downed in one long slug, produced a sizable torch. Another burp once burned off the hair of his co-worker Amy (Lauren Tom).
Some of the burps on "Futurama" are provided by actors who actually bother to belch into the microphone. Often it's Dimaggio, and he once admitted on a commentary track that one must burp-speak the letter "I" to get the proper eructation. On the commentary track for the episode "Crimes of the Hot," the "Futurama" showrunners joked that the (unnamed) actress who provided the episode's many burps -- hundreds of robots belch at the same time -- tragically died the day after recording.
But there is one belching maestro on the "Futurama" cast, and you've likely heard his burps before.

Not many original Warner Brothers’ IPs are quite as unique as ‘The Animaniacs’. Originally airing from 1993 to 1998, it followed the mischievous antics of three siblings (and various side characters) as they caused various disturbances around the Warner movie lot. These antics take the form of a variety sketch show, with episodes containing three different segments that often careen into each other. But that’s not the only thing that made this show unique. It was ahead of its time in many ways. The series often indulged in meta humor, leading to pranks and parodies on actors, movies, and Warner Brothers itself. The innovative sitcom left a sizable hole in its place after it went off the air. Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here. We’re a month away from getting Animaniacs back and it’s not a moment too soon. Yakko, Wacko, and Dot have been missing since the late-90s and, honestly, it was probably more due to fatigue than anything else. Sometimes you need to rest a property, then bring it back down the line. Animaniacs is a very welcome return, but at the same time, we don’t want it to be too different. More specifically, it doesn’t need to be too different. Add a new splash of paint and modernize it without straying too far, but keep the soul the same.
Things were already on the right track with the news that they were bringing back all the original voice actors. Apparently, it was a situation where Steven Spielberg wanted all of them back or it wasn’t happening.

Hulu’s reboot of Animaniacs has been in the works for years now, and we got our first preview image of the Warner brothers and their Warner sister back in August when the streamer released a teaser image of the trio of animated maniacs (plus Pinky and The Brain). A first look at Hulu’s upcoming Steven Spielberg-produced “Animaniacs” reboot is here.
The teaser clip was revealed during Sunday’s “Animaniacs” cast and producer panel at New York Comic Con, and features an animated Spielberg introducing Yakko, Wakko and Dot within the world of “Jurassic Park.” The clip begins with animated versions of “Jurassic Park’s” Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler stumbling upon the Warner brothers and sister during an expedition.
“Alan, this species of cartoon has been extinct since 1998. I mean, these haven’t been seen on TV since the golden era of animation!” Sattler says, as Grant manually turns her head to reveal the Animaniacs in all their wacky glory.
An animated Spielberg then appears to confirm the news, telling a baffled Sattler and Grant that he reanimated the trio, as well as Pinky and the Brain. An animated spokesperson for Hulu even appears to plainly...

Hulu dropped a first look at its “Animaniacs” reboot during New York Comic Con Sunday, featuring an animated Steven Spielberg using “Jurassic Park”-style technology to bring back the Warner brothers, Yakko and Wakko, and the Warner sister, Dot.
The clip was released during a virtual panel with “Animaniacs” executive producers and the voice cast, which you can view via the video above. The tease, which is from Episode 1 of the streaming service’s upcoming reboot, starts at the 18:40 mark and goes until 20:13.
In the brief scene, you’ll see an animated version of the iconic filmmaker, who produced the original “Animaniacs” series, bring cartoon takes on “Jurassic Park” characters Alan, Ellie and Ian, plus Hulu and Warner Bros. executives, out to see the revived Yakko, Wakko and Dot in a bit that’s basically straight out of the 1993 film.

When it comes to Yakko, Wacko, and Dot Warner, the trio is meant to come off as timeless. They’re sentient retcons, created in the early 1990s, but also canonically existing since the 1930s. Much like Bugs Bunny (and unlike Buster Bunny), it doesn’t matter what decade they’re doing their hijinks in.
That’s why it’s so welcome that Animaniacs is making a comeback in November on Hulu. With the same voice actors behind the characters decades later and the Steven Spielberg seal of approval, all signs point to this being a worthwhile revival.
And while that Animaniacs theme song is so damn iconic – including the Freakazoid parody – it Maaaaaay just need an update. I mean, for one, there’s the line about Bill Clinton playing the sax. It’s been three Presidents since then! If we’re lucky, we’ll be on our way to four...

Ever since getting the role of Snow Job in the ’80s GI Joe animated series, Rob Paulsen realized that his future was not in a local rock band or appearing in commercials, but in the realm of voice acting. Through the decades, Paulsen has taken on many iconic roles, such as Raphael from the ’80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Donatello from the 2012 reboot, Carl Wheezer from Jimmy Neutron, Mighty Max, Major Glory from Dexter’s Lab, Pj from Goof Troop, Steelbeak from Darkwing Duck, Buck Tuddrussel from Time Squad, and hundreds more.
He’s also a survivor of throat cancer and recently wrote a book about it called Voice Lessons.
Of course, two of his biggest roles that come to mind are Yakko Warner, Pinky, and Dr. Scratchansniff characters from the beloved animated series Animaniacs. Wouldn’t you know it, that series will be coming back this November!

A weirdly tame, let’s-all-get-wasted riff on “The Purge” from the team behind such solid youth-focused comedies as “Banana Split” and “Big Time Adolescence,” Hulu original “The Binge” imagines an alternate America where all drugs and alcohol are illegal, except during a 12-hour window each year, at which time anything goes. , treating intoxication as the punchline rather than the setup for what should have been a more subversive satire.
If only the country’s Puritan forefathers, or the teetotalers behind Prohibition, could see where their influence has steered us! Screenwriter Jordan VanDina (who’s also working on the “Animaniacs” reboot) has a few genuinely rowdy ideas up his sleeve — including an epic case of a driving under the influence and a shootout involving the world’s smallest crossbow — all of which is heightened by some reasonably inspired improvisation, especially from Mvp Vince Vaughn as a wildly inappropriate high school principal.

The “Animaniacs” will be back on the small screen in 2020.
Hulu has announced that the Steven Spielberg-produced reboot of the classic ’90s cartoon will premiere Nov. 20 on the platform, a full 22 years after its final episode.
The premiere date news comes over two years after Hulu handed the revival a two-season series order. This new version of the family friendly cartoon will see Warner siblings, Yakko and Wakko, and the Warner sister Dot, have a great time wreaking havoc and mayhem in the lives of everyone they meet. Joining the trio will be fan-favorites Pinky and the Brain, who will also return to continue their quest for world domination in 13 episodes. A second season consisting of 13 more episodes will be heading to Hulu sometime in 2021.

Animaniacs is set to break free from a decades-long purgatory in the Warner Bros. Water Tower, thanks to the impending arrival of a Hulu reboot series, which now has a solid release date.
Hulu has officially announced that the new Animaniacs will premiere on its platform on Friday, November 20. The series, a production of Hulu, Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation, will launch with 13 episodes, showcasing the rebooted adventures of Warner siblings Yakko, Wakko and Dot in a return that’s 22 years in the making, reinventing the classic 1993-1998 animated series and its concluding 1999 direct-to-video feature, Yakko’s Wish. Given Hulu’s officially released image of the Warners (as seen in the title image), the series appears to be sticking to a classic look.
Interestingly enough, Hulu’s announcement for the inaugural season of its rebooted Animaniacs comes with the news that series has been preemptively renewed for a 13-episode second season.

22 years after its final episode aired, Warner Bros. Animation’s Animaniacs is finally coming back. Way back in January 2018, Hulu announced that Yakko, Wakko, Dot and their many co-stars would be returning for two new seasons. Since then, we’ve had to face a grueling wait, but (Coronavirus permitting), the new episodes will finally hit Hulu on September 14th, 2020.
As it’s been more than two decades since the show last aired though, many are curious whether it can capture the same freewheeling anarchic attitude that made it such a hit in the 90s. That remains to be seen, but one good sign is that the entire voice cast is returning for the series. Rob Paulsen (who voices Yakko) has confirmed in a recent interview that Jess Harnell and Tress MacNeille will be back as Wakko and Dot, respectively, and also revealed that Maurice Lamarche will join him in bringing back Pinky and the Brain.

As Hollywood production has ground to a halt over the escalating Covid-19 pandemic, there is one area that been able to keep the lights on for the most part — animation.
As new episodes of The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers and more just this past weekend made it to air, many animated series are still in production, with their creative teams working in sync from home. And voiceover jobs are among the very few opportunities for actors right now, as many in that field have recording facilities in their own homes.
