- Set against the beauty of Far North Queensland, Ocean Girl is the story of Neri, a mysterious young girl from the ocean, who is discovered by the young inhabitants of an underwater research colony.
- Neri is a young girl with an affinity for water, super-human strength, the ability to swim long distances, and super-human lung capacity. She lives alone on an otherwise deserted island. Early in the first season, she befriends two Australian boys named Jason and Brett Bates. This friendship is a highly guarded secret at first due to her fear of other humans. Jason and Brett live in an elaborate underwater research and environmental protection facility called ORCA (the Oceanic Research Center of Australia), located near Port Douglas, Queensland. At the beginning of the series, their mother, Diane, has been assigned to ORCA to study whale song in the hopes of facilitating cross-species communication. A significant portion of the series takes place on ORCA itself, and looks at the activities of its inhabitants, which includes the children of the resident scientists, such as Jason and Brett.—Adventure
- Dr. Diane Bates accepts a job on a new underwater science laboratory called ORCA. She is going to study whales as part of her research. Recently divorced she and her two sons, Jason and Brett, set out to start a new life, which they don't know is about to change. After boarding ORCA, they soon discover irregular patterns in the whale's song. As the story unfolds it appears that it's communicating with another being--a girl named Neri in fact. She not only can talk to whales, but she can breathe underwater as well. The story continues as she discovers a sister and her origins--a far off planet. She is from an advanced civilization called "The Planet of the Oceans" and that she has been sent on a mission to try to save it as well as Earth.
