Suzanne Pleshette was originally going to play Jonathan Silverman's character's mother in six episodes. However, due to some writers changing the character to a stereotypical Jewish mother that was a shrew, Pleshette told the producers that she was only going to do the three that she had already done. Being Jewish herself, she took offense to the changes in the character.
In the first season of the show, Jessica Hecht played the role of Jonathan Eliot's friend and neighbor Janeane Percy-Parker while simultaneously appearing on Friends (1994) as Susan Bunch, the wife of Dr. Ross Geller's ex-wife. However, David Schwimmer appeared on Neighbors (1995) as Dr. Ross Geller, which was the only time Schwimmer ever portrayed Geller outside of Friends (1994).
Jonathan Silverman, Joey Slotnick, Ming-Na Wen, and Ernest Borgnine are the only actors to appear in all 43 episodes of this series.
In the spring of 1995, as The Single Guy (1995) was in development, the producers asked Ernest Borgnine to come in and read for the part of Manny the doorman. Borgnine drove to the casting office, and waited in the reception area. After 30 minutes of waiting, he begrudgingly left the office. The next day, the producers called Borgnine, apologizing profusely for the wait and automatically offering him the part right over the phone. Borgnine later said it was the easiest job interview he ever had.
