As the final stretch of October sets in, there is still plenty of time to catch favorite flicks, spooky, witchy, scary or cozy in the season of pumpkins, monsters and more. Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween has several classic films airing all month long such as Casper (1995), Arachnophobia, Goosebumps, Edward Scissorhands, etc.

More recent films like 2021’s Ghostbustesr: Afterlife, 2022’s Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) and Haunted Mansion (2023) will also be available. Clint Eastwood was one of the biggest movie stars in the world in 1995, but, up until that point, he was not known for appearing in family-friendly films. CBS' "Rawhide," the television series that launched him in the 1960s, and 1982's "Firefox," with its video game tie-in, are probably his two most kid-appropriate works. "Bronco Billy" and "Honkytonk Man" are also family films in a way, though, really, Eastwood only hit the bullseye with kids when he plopped Clyde the orangutan into the bare-knuckle-brawling adventures of Philo Beddoe in "Every Which Way But Loose" and "Any Which Way You Can" (both of which have no shortage of gleefully raunchy moments).

Eastwood also wasn't known for his romantic dramas, so the summer of 1995 promised to be an outlier for him with his adaptation of Robert James Waller's runaway bestseller "The Bridges of Madison County.

Halloween is the time of year when horror appeals to all ages and backgrounds, but especially so for the young and young at heart. Luckily, there’s no shortage of family-friendly frights on streaming or network TV. If you’ve already grown tired of the familiar staples that include enduring favorites like Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, Casper, Coraline, Don’t Look Under the Bed, Beetlejuice, and more, here’s the list for you.

On October 28, 2000, kids all across America tuned into the Nickelodeon Snick programming block to watch a new horror movie called "Cry Baby Lane." As bowls of microwaved popcorn flowed over, living room lights went down, and children gathered in front of the television, no one could have predicted that everyone watching would become a part of history. Directed by Peter Lauer, "Cry Baby Lane" is about two brothers — the feeble Andrew (Jase Blankfort) and massive jerk Carl (Trey Rogers) — who love hearing ghost stories from the undertaker, Mr. Bennett (Frank Langella).

One night, the undertaker tells the story of a local farmer whose wife gave birth to conjoined twins (the movie uses the insensitive term "Siamese twins" because it was the year 2000), with one of the babies being noticeably evil. The farmer kept the twins locked up in an attic and away from the public eye before they eventually got sick and died together.

"Joker: Folie a Deux" may have just proven that even big-budget movies won't always top the box office when they have terrible reviews and little love from fans, but apparently the streaming world is still operating on a different level. For nearly three weeks now, the Shailene Woodley and Joseph Gordon-Levitt led film "Killer Heat" has been topping the Amazon Prime movies chart (per FlixPatrol), despite earning an abysmal 15% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It may just be a sparse season for new releases on Prime Video, but given that one of the year's best films, Luca Guadagnino's sexy tennis drama "Challengers," is currently at number six on the most-streamed Prime Video films list, something about "Killer Heat" is clearly appealing to subscribers. Now streaming on Hulu, “Child Star” runs through Lovato’s own career while weaving in stories from others that she interviews. The film “explores the highs and lows of growing up in the spotlight through the lens of some of the world’s most well-known former child stars. Through celebrity interviews, vérité scenes and archival footage, this film deconstructs the stages of earlier stardom and looks at the entertainment system over the last century.”

Any Universal Studios tourist worth their weight in candy rock-salt knows Stage 12 — but the historic filming location can be seen like never before at Halloween Horror Nights 2024.

An original haunted house with an all-female cast, “Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines” can be found inside the famous building on the studio’s sprawling California backlot. Built in 1929, Stage 12 has been around for almost a century and is still among the most culturally significant film stages in the world.

“I’ve talked about it a lot, but I don’t think you can talk about it enough,” the event’s creative director John Murdy told IndieWire during opening night. “The fact that we’re doing a house this year on the very soundstage where ‘Frankenstein’ was filmed in 1931, where ‘Dracula’ was filmed in 1931, where ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ was filmed in 1935, et cetera. That’s just so cool and something that could only happen at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The Disney-owned network celebrates Halloween all October long with non-stop movies each year, and they are ramping up the lineup this year.

Freeform’s “31 Nights of Halloween” is back for 2024, and this year has all the spooks you could ask for.

The programming event, which runs from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, will bring back classic Halloween movies like “Hocus Pocus” — for a grand total of 20 airings throughout the month — as well as “Casper,” “Beetlejuice,” “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Edward Scissorhands” and the 2003 version of “The Haunted Mansion.”

Speaking of “Haunted Mansion,” the 2023 remake starring Lakeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson and Tiffany Haddish will make its broadcast debut on Oct. 5, while “Hocus Pocus 2” also makes its broadcast debut the next day, Oct. 6.

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg and his production company Amblin Entertainment are behind some of the most popular family movies of all time. One of the more underrated offerings from the acclaimed filmmaker’s production house is the 1995 supernatural comedy film Casper, starring Bill Pullman as Dr. James Harvey.

The film follows Harvey, a widower, and a ghost therapist as his daughter befriends the titular ghost. It is known for its extensive use of computer-generated imagery, more notably being the first film to have a full CG main lead. During an interview, Pullman reflected on what the film’s ambitious CGI meant for him, recalling an incident where Spielberg warned him of the consequences of messing up a scene.

Exclusive: Jordana Brewster and Devon Sawa are boarding Spyglass’ original horror rom-com, Heart Eyes, which is currently in production in New Zealand.

They join previously announced Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding.

The Josh Ruben-directed, Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy-written feature follows a pair of co-workers in Seattle who are pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day. When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes, they’re mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. The duo are forced to spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.

Republic Pictures picked up distribution rights to Heart Eyes excluding the U.S. and Canada.

Landon and Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks are producing. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone are EPs with Murphy and Mel Turner.

The cast also includes Gigi Zumbado. Zumbado’s previous credits include Kenya Barris’ multi-cam comedy Unrelated and recurring roles on ABC’s Promised Land and Fox’s 9-1-1. Zumbado stars opposite Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff in the indie feature The Price We Pay.

Brewster has starred in the $6 billion plus grossing Fast & Furious franchise as Mia Torretto. Her feature credits include Simulant alongside Sam Worthington and Simu Liu, the horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, the cult classic D.E.B.S., the sci-fi horror The Faculty, the drama The Invisible Circus, The Integrity of Joseph Chambers, Hooking Up, Random Acts of Violence, North of Hell, American Heist, Annapolis and Who Invited Charlie?. She can next be seen in the feature film Cellar Door. Sawa starred on the Syfy series Chucky alongside Jennifer Tilly and as Jean Smart’s hunky love interest in Hacks for Max. Sawa also starred opposite Sylvester Stallone and Dave Bautista in Escape Plan: The Extractors, opposite John Travolta in The Fanatic, and opposite Guy Pearce in Disturbing the Peace. Sawa was on the hit CW show Nikita alongside Maggie Q. The Vancouver, Canada native broke out as a child actor in such movies as Casper, Now and Then, and Little Giants. He went on to star in the New Line horror franchise Final Destination as well as cult pics Idle Hands and Slc Punk. He reprised his Slc Punk role in the sequel Punk’s Dead. To say that this Memorial Day weekend was a disappointment at the box office would be a grave understatement. Warner Bros. unleashed director George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" in theaters, while Sony Pictures released the family-friendly "The Garfield Movie." On paper, we had a much-anticipated (or so we thought) prequel to "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is one of the most beloved action movies of all time, as well as an animated movie that could get parents out of the house with their kids. In practice, we endured a truly sobering several days' worth of lousy ticket sales.

"Furiosa" topped the charts with a $26.3 million haul through Sunday, with that number growing to $32 million when accounting for the Monday holiday. "Garfield" came in a close second with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million through Monday. Both of those numbers were well below industry projections, with "Furiosa" failing...

Memorial Day is usually one of the biggest and best weekends at the box office, but the warped year that is 2024 at the box office continued with neither of the new wide releases blowing up. Read on for the weekend box office report.

Going into the weekend, George Miller‘s prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had scored impressive reviews after its Cannes Film Festival debut with 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Warner Bros. had the film’s stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, just about everywhere promoting the movie. It ended up making $3.5 million from Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, which was less than the $3.7 previews for “Mad Max: Fury Road” back in 2015. It ended up making $10.2 million on Friday, including those previews, which was not a good sign it might reach the $40 million plus projected in advance. Instead, it ended up with $26.3 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated $32 million including Monday.

Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa” pulled out to a narrow lead over Sony/Alcon/Dneg’s “The Garfield Movie,” though that is not much of a victory as the $32 million extended opening earned by the “Mad Max” prequel is part of the worst Memorial Day weekend box office results seen since the 1990s.

“Furiosa” scored the lowest total for a No. 1 Memorial Day film since “Casper” in 1995, while the overall estimated 4-day total of $128 million is a sharp 37% drop from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.

It’s a drop that can be attributed to an industry-wide slump as Hollywood and exhibitors weather weeks of reduced theatrical output due to delays caused by last year’s strikes, including Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has enjoyed exceptional presales but moved from May to late July and left theaters without their customary comic book film boost to kick off the summer.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking grim. The “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” is on track to score the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take. But traditionally, the holiday weekend is a big one for moviegoing – kids are out of school, adults have three days off and the summer movie season is ready to roll.

For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

Bill Pullman probably isn’t the first actor you’d think would be cast to portray a drug-addicted sociopath who is convicted of killing his wife Maggie and son Paul, as he does playing Alex Murdaugh in the Lifetime two-part docudrama “Murdaugh Murders: The Movie.” This is, after all the same guy who played the heroic President of the U.S. in the 1996 blockbuster “Independence Day,” and his impressive career has found him playing an assortment of characters similarly defined by their inherent decency. This is also a man who has been married for 37 years – to the same woman. Not that Pullman necessarily sees himself as having a brand. “Everybody says, ‘Oh, you do’,” he admits. “But I think I’m available for (the whole of) human behavior. It’s about time! Thirteen years have gone by since the release of Final Destination 5, but we’ve been hearing rumblings that another sequel was on the way for years. A while back, Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, came on board to produce the sixth film in the Final Destination franchise alongside Dianne McGunigle, Sheila Hanahan Taylor, and Craig Perry. Back in September of 2022, we learned that the duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously directed the 2018 film Freaks (starring Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern) and the 2019 live-action Kim Possible movie, would be directing Final Destination 6. Last October, it was revealed that the film will be called Final Destination: Bloodlines… and now cinematographer Christian Sebaldt has shared an image that indicates Final Destination: Bloodlines will be heading into production soon! A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.

First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.

We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

For only the second time since mid-June, Suits is not the No. 1 title in Nielsen’s streaming rankings.

That honor belongs to Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher, which snagged the top spot for the week of Oct. 9-15. Writer-director Mike Flanagan’s spin on the titular Edgar Allan Poe story (and several others by the author) drew 1.23 billion minutes of viewing, edging out the 1.13 billion for Suits.

The latter series continued its months-long run above the billion-minute mark, however, and has now compiled almost 44.4 billion minutes (about 739.8 million hours) of viewing on Netflix and Peacock since it first hit the rankings in June. Nielsen notes that viewing of Suits’ ninth and final season, which is only available on Peacock, accounted for 6 percent of the weekly tally (about 67.6 million minutes) — the highest percentage for those episodes since the other eight seasons debuted on Netflix.

The return of Loki to Disney+ didn’t cause quite as big a stir as the show’s debut.

Season two of the Marvel series premiered Oct. 5, and it gathered 446 million minutes of viewing time over its first three days and change (it was released at 9 p.m. Et/6 p.m. Pt Oct. 5 in the United States), according to Nielsen’s streaming rankings. That’s about 39 percent lower than the 731 million minutes of viewing for Loki’s series premiere week in June 2021.

Disney said that the season two premiere, which runs 47 minutes, had 10.9 million “views” worldwide, which would equate to about 512 million minutes of watch time (the increasingly standard definition of a streaming view is total viewing time divided by run time). The 446 million minutes recorded by Nielsen includes viewing of season one’s six episodes as well, so it’s hard to say exactly how much time U.S.

1995's "Casper" wasn't exactly a critical hit when it first arrived, but as Netflix viewers have proven, you can always count on the friendly ghost for a wholesomely spooktacular time. As a kid, I was happily unaware of the critical response to the movie, and haven't really kept up with the "Casper" discourse since — shameful, I know. I do remember watching it in my local cinema and being transported away from my little English town for a while. Seven-year-old me just found something mesmerizing about the look and feel of the film. Plus, it had ghosts and cool special effects, which was pretty much all I could ask for at that age. I'm not saying it's a classic of cinema, but what are these movies for if not to immerse you in times, places, and feelings that you otherwise wouldn't experience?

Like so many before and after him, Frank Laloggia had a hard time when he first started out in the film business. Yet after booking several roles as an actor, the Rochester native seemed to finally catch his big break. He had been given the chance to write and direct a feature film. Unfortunately, Laloggia’s disillusionment with the industry set in while working on 1981’s Fear No Evil. Severe studio interference was the main cause of his disappointment, and as a result, Laloggia took an extended break from filmmaking. However, the time off between his debut and Lady in White proved to be beneficial; Laloggia returned from his long leave with what many regard as the best film of his career.

“The Equalizer 3” (Sony) debuted on PVOD at $19.99 with #1 placement at both iTunes and Vudu. It’s #5 at Google Play, which seems to be lagging worse than usual; its titles haven’t changed in four days, which likely affects some rankings.

Meantime, “Fair Play,” the relationship thriller that premiered to acclaim at Sundance last January, is an immediate #1 at Netflix. The streamer paid $20 million for worldwide rights, a bargain against the production costs for other Netflix Originals.

The Denzel Washington franchise, currently #8 in theaters with $86 million domestic gross, added PVOD after 32 days. “The Nun II” (Warner Bros.), currently #7 at the box office with $81 million, arrived a week sooner at 25 days at $19.99. It is #2 at Vudu (which lists by revenue) and lags elsewhere: It’s #5 at iTunes and #10 at Google Play.

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!

Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).

Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

In the wake of films like Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and The Mean One, it seems that no family-friendly kids property is truly safe from the icy cold grip of the horror genre. It’s always fun to imagine beloved non-horror franchises taking a sinister turn, and fan Jared Pelletier has just whipped up his own faux trailer that reimagines Casper in that vein.

“This is a reimagining of Casper the Friendly Ghost as an elevated horror film,” Pelletier tells Bloody Disgusting. “I put this together as part of a contest to showcase how this IP revival could be reimagined – but I’m really just doing this as a massive fan of horror, the Halloween season we’re entering, and as a creative outlet as we navigate the strikes in our business.”
