Earlier this year, J. Cole made the wise decision to remove himself from the tangled web of Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s ruthless rap battle. His only contribution was the diss record “7 Minute Drill,” which was aimed at Kendrick but in a way that still held immense respect for him.
The rapper himself walked the track back as being “the lamest shit I ever did in my fucking life” just days after releasing it. In the weeks that followed, Drake and Kendrick both made it clear that any sense of...

Grammy nominations voting commenced today, October 4, and continues until October 15, so eligible members of the Recording Academy have 11 days to make their choices. The resulting Grammy noms will be announced on November 8. Voting for winners follows from December 12, 2024, to January 3, 2025 — happy holidays! — and then the 67th Annual Grammy Awards telecast is scheduled for February 2, 2025.
But eligible voters can’t select nominees in all Grammy categories. They can vote in up to 10 races across three genre fields, though the entire membership can also chime in on Album of the Year; Record of the Year; Song of the Year; Best New Artist; Producer of the Year, Non-Classical; and Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical. This is to ensure that members only vote for the awards where they have the greatest experience and expertise.
But who will be nominated? Music fans have been placing their bets in the big four categories here in our predictions center.

This nomination year was one of pop’s most lively in recent memory, with newly minted phenomena, breakout hits, and superstar flag-plants jostling for position on playlists and charts. It makes for a fairly wide-open Record of the Year field that could balance starpower with surprises.

The VMAs returned to New York this year to celebrate this year's biggest music stars in the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. Megan Thee Stallion did an amazing job hosting the Awards and delivering a show-stopping performance. Some of the biggest artists also got to perform: Chappell Roan made her awards show debut with a standout performance of her hit "Good Luck, Babe!" and she graced us with her “Roan of Arc” theme – which is a play with “Joan of Arc”. Sabrina Carpenter paid tribute to iconic pop culture blondes in her medley of "Please Please Please," "Taste," and "Espresso". Karol G captivated the audience and got them dancing in her performance of “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido”. Katy Perry made a wonderful performance of some of her most iconic songs. The Award show featured performances by Rauw Alejandro, Benson Boone, Halsey, LL Cool J feat. Public Enemy, Lenny Kravitz feat.

The 2024 VMAs took place last week, with some expected winners and other unexpected turns. While winning and performing at the VMAs is important in and of itself, it can also serve as a way for artists to kick-start the awards season for music and perhaps give themselves a boost at other events. Specifically, with Grammy voting just weeks away (October 4 to October 15), the VMAs can help you put yourself in front of voters.
SEETaylor Swift sets new record for most VMA wins in history: Here’s all 29 victories of her career
In that regard, I’d say the two biggest winners at this year’s VMAs were Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan. The two stars were already among the top female artists of the year, but this show was a star-making moment for both of them. Roan took home the award for Best New Artist and dedicated her speech to queer identities.

With just under four months left in 2024, there have already been more hip-hop songs to top Billboard‘s Hot 100 Songs (and as many rap albums on the 200 albums chart) than in all of 2023, the sign of a resurgent year for the most popular genre in the country.
And while younger artists like Ice Spice and Latto have generated huge buzz, it’s the older rappers who carried the genre’s chart dominance in the 2010s (or earlier) that are mainly responsible for the chart-toppers this year.

An emotional Lil Wayne took to Instagram to record a video telling fans how devastated he was when he learned that he was not selected to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show at the big game ending the NFL’s season this February, having lost the gig to red hot rapper Kendrick Lamar.

That the game is being played in the Big Easy, his hometown, made the sting that much harsher for Lil Wayne, as he indicated on Instagram. Typically, the MTV Video Music Awards follow an expected rhythm. Taylor Swift sweeps, there’s an R&b throwback and tried-and-true favorites dominate. Yet that wasn’t exactly the case for the 2024 VMAs, a ceremony that celebrated newcomers Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and Benson Boone as loudly as old favorites like Eminem and Katy Perry.
In some cases, the new faces actually scored louder applause than the old.
This year, TheWrap was there to witness it all. From secret stages and specialty cocktails to surprising celebrity appearances, here’s what went on behind the scenes of MTV’s iconic awards show during its 40th year.

Sasha Colby may have stole some spotlight by dubbing Chappell Roan “your favorite drag queen’s favorite artist,” but the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winner was far from the only drag queen at the VMAs.

On the first full day of the NFL season, the league announced that Kendrick Lamar would be headlining the Super Bowl Lix halftime show in New Orleans. Despite New Orleans native Lil Wayne being right there for a hometown set of hits, NFL brass (with consultation from Jay-Z’s Roc Nation) decided to go with Lamar. The moment feels like the league attempting to get in on Lamar’s momentum as he cements one of the greatest runs in rap history that didn’t include an actual project. Lamar’s...

Kendrick Lamar will perform at the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime show, Roc Nation, Apple Music, and the NFL announced on Sunday.
Super Bowl Lix is scheduled to be played on February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans and will air on Fox.
The performance will be Lamar’s second during the halftime show, following his featured spot during Dr. Dre’s 2022 all-star tag team of Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 Cent. It also follows Lamar’s musical battle with Drake earlier this year, which not only resulted in a resounding win for the Compton-born rapper, but one of the year’s biggest songs with “Not Like Us.”
That spirit continues with Lamar’s statement about the move: “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date,” he said. “And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards are promising to be a great show, with confirmed performers like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Karol G all slated for the September 11 ceremony. But the biggest part of the show are the awards themselves, with many close races that will keep us on the edge of our seats until the envelopes are opened. Let’s review four general categories not tied to specific genres.
SEEMegan Thee Stallion hosting 2024 VMAs: She’s also a multiple nominee at the event
Best Collaboration
This category seems to be a two-horse race between Taylor Swift and Post Malone’s “Fortnight” and Jungkook and Latto’s “Seven.” The former has the advantage of Swift being the most widely known entertainer in the world. However, Jungkook is from the boy band BTS, and one thing everyone knows about BTS is that their fan base is one of the biggest and strongest in the music industry.

Drake has surprise released a trio of new songs through his burner Instagram account @plottttwistttttt on Friday, weeks after he leaked three other songs earlier this month.
The new songs are titled ““Circadian Rhythm,” “Sod,” and “No Face,” the latter of which features Playboi Carti. “Sod” appears to be the same song as “Supersoak,” the track that Lil Yachty had originally leaked to Twitch streamer Kai Cenat last month. Yachty said that there were sample clearance issues on the track as creator Mr. Hotspot had religious objections over the sample use.

“Africa to the world” has been a popular rallying cry from the continent and its diaspora as the global appetite for its culture has grown rapidly. Many hope to further extend its reach. There are two major mainstream contenders here. The first is Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” which has, at this point, outgrown the whole Drake beef to become a moment of its own. Kendrick Lamar’s scorching (and insanely catchy) Drake diss “Not Like Us” has rung out everywhere from basketball arenas to bar mitzvahs all summer, but one event where it wasn’t played was Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin’s annual July 4th All-White party.
