Now that they’ve set the year’s best film for a December 10 debut, the Criterion Channel have unveiled the rest of next month’s selection. John Waters’ films are inseparable from John Waters’ presence, making fitting Criterion’s decision to pair an eight-film retrospective (Multiple Maniacs to Cecil B. Demented) with his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” wherein the director extols virtues of Bergman, Chabrol, Barbara Loden, and Samuel Fuller. His own Polyester will have a Criterion Edition alongside the Bob Dylan doc Don’t Look Back, an iconic film in its own right and, I think, fitting companion to The Unknown with Lon Chaney, also streaming on Criterion. No Country for Old Men and Election receive likewise treatment; the latter appears in “MTV Productions,” a series featuring Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, The Original Kings of Comedy, and (coming close to Freddy Got Fingered for least-expected 2024 addition) Jackass: the Movie.

Sony and Amazon/MGM's Spider-Noir series appears to be taking some major liberties with the source material, but given how obscure this Variant of the web-slinger is, does it really matter if "Ben Reilly" is beneath the mask instead of Peter Parker?
That's debatable; regardless, Sony appears to be ignoring the fact Ben is Peter's clone and we don't anticipate that being addressed in any way when Spider-Noir swings on to streaming next year.
Today, we have some new photos from the TV show's set (via Just Jared) showcasing Nicolas Cage's private eye. We've already seen that the series will feature a comic-accurate superhero costume and Cage unquestionably looks the part of "Ben" in these snaps.
Earlier this year, Cage opened up on what led to him reprising a role he first played in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

It’s been three decades since some of Hollywood’s hottest young actors, as well as an up-and-coming young actress, came together to surprise us with a sensual and thrilling gothic horror flick. “Interview with the Vampire” hit theaters on November 11, 1994, almost 20 years after Anne Rice’s debut novel was published. Read on for more about the “Interview with the Vampire” 30th anniversary.
Rice wrote “Interview with the Vampire” after the death of her five-year-old daughter from leukemia, reworking a short story she had written a few years prior. The homoerotic novel about vampires Louis de Pointe du Lac and his sire Lester de Lioncourt was first published in 1976, with the film rights obtained at that time. After years in development hell, Warner Bros. secured the rights, and brought in “The Crying Game” director Neil Jordan, who rewrote Rice’s script, although she retained credit. The company pointed to a recent price increase as the biggest reason for last quarter’s subscriber loss.
The quarter ending on September 30 was one that Lionsgate would likely choose to forget. The new deal will ensure that YouTube TV subscribers continue to have access to shows like ‘Outlander’ and ‘Sweetpea.’
One of the reasons YouTube TV has managed to acquire 8 million paid subscribers is the good balance of channels available on the service. YouTube TV carries dozens of the most popular cable channels on the market, and customers can pay a little extra every month to add the Starz premium network to their subscription if they wish. That convenience will continue for the foreseeable future, as on Tuesday Starz and YouTube TV announced a new, multi-year carriage deal with the potential for more bundle opportunities.
Key Details: Viewers can add Starz to their YouTube TV subscription for $11 per month. The channel will debut the second half of “Outlander” Season 7 in November. Starz is available to bundle with Max and Paramount+ with Showtime as well as MGM+ on YouTube TV. Sign Up $10.99+ / month starz.

Given that it's being developed by Sony, there's been some concern among fans that Amazon's Spider-Noir series starring Nicolas Cage might not see the title character actually suit up.
Peter Parker has already been replaced by Ben Reilly as Spider-Man Noir, but newly revealed photos and footage from the show's set confirm we're getting a comic-accurate take on the wall-crawling private detective.
The hero looks like he's stepped straight off the page with a design that's also pretty much identical to what we saw in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Based on how this scene is playing out, Ben will see a fair bit of action as he rides atop a car while shooting webs into the distance. He also has his trademark hat and goggles, though we should point out that it's a stuntman in the suit, not Cage.

The legacy of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt can almost be considered predestined in Hollywood – so powerful is their impact on the industry today. However, the problem with legends is that there can only be one of them at a time. And the world will never settle for knocking either Pitt or Cruise off the pedestal to raise the other.

The newer generation with actors like Jacob Elordi, Timothée Chalamet, and Austin Butler have a long way to go before elevating themselves to the level of Cruise and Pitt. Brad PItt is easily one of the biggest Hollywood icons around. Ever since making a name for himself in 1991’s Thelma and Louise, the actor has been consistently in the news. Be it for his work in movies such as 12 Monkeys and Fight Club, or his list of never-ending personal problems, Pitt has everything one would expect from a bonafide Hollywood icon.
However, when it comes to his height, Pitt is often seen as a short-sized king, which may as well be partly down to how he appears on screen.
However, the truth is that Brad Pitt is 5’11 (1.80 m), a height that stands slightly above the average American male.

Ah, the saga of Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie’s relationship—never was there a tale of more oohs and ahs, unless you’re counting Romeo and Juliet, minus the William Shakespearean tragedy, but plus a gaggle of paparazzi. Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man – Universal has brought them all back to the screen in the decades since their glory days in the 1930s and ’40s. But one classic Universal monster who hasn’t had a new movie since the 1950s is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, a.k.a. the Gill Man. The closest we’ve gotten is the unofficial version of the creature that was seen in the 1987 classic The Monster Squad… but last month, it was reported that genre regular James Wan and his production company Atomic Monster are developing “a grounded modernized retelling” of Creature from the Black Lagoon that will lean into “visceral horror while paying respect to the original classic.” Now, Deadline has learned that this Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot will be written by Sean Tretta.

"...the 'Magic: The Gathering' collectible card game was created by Richard Garfield... ...and released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast, now a subsidiary of toy giant Hasbro.
"Noted as the first 'fantasy' trading card game, with more than twenty billion cards produced, premise of the game is a battle between 'wizard planeswalkers' who cast spells... ...use artifacts and summon creatures depicted on individual cards, to defeat their opponents, by draining them of their 20 'starting life' points..."
New cards are released on a regular basis through expansion sets... ...with certain cards monetarily valuable due to their rarity in production and utility in gameplay... ...with many cards worth thousands of dollars each.

Netflix is taking another shot at an animated series based on Magic: The Gathering, the hugely popular role-playing game. The streamer first picked up a series based on the game in 2019, with Joe and Anthony Russo as showrunners.
The Russo brothers later departed the series over creative differences, and Jeff Klein (Transformers: Prime) took the reins. Brandon Routh was set to play in one of the lead voice roles, but that iteration of the show eventually fell by the wayside. Routh said in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival that the show is “apparently not happening”; while that’s true for the version he worked on, Netflix is now forging ahead with a new version.

The long-gestating “Magic: The Gathering” animated series at Netflix is moving forward with a new showrunner.
Terry Matalas is now set as the series’ showrunner, as revealed during Netflix’s annual Geeked Week event. The new take on the series is now in production. The show is produced in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast. Plot details for the new iteration are being kept under wraps.
There had recently been widespread speculation that the show was no longer moving forward at Netflix. Originally announced in 2019, the first iteration of the series was overseen by the Russo brothers of MCU fame. But then Jeff Kline was announced as the new executive producer and creative lead on the show in 2021 after the Russos departed over creative differences, with Brandon Routh being announced as voicing the series lead not long after.
Since then, however, there has been virtually no news about the series.

Netflix is starting again with its animated adaptation of table-top game Magic: The Gathering.
The streamer previously announced a version of the show in 2019 with Joe and Anthony Russo at the helm. The Russos and their team, including head writers Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina, departed early in the process over different visions for how best to adapt the IP. Jeff Kline (Transformers: Prime) took over in August 2021 but he has also now left.
The new showrunner will be Terry Matalas, who was recently named showrunner of Marvel’s Vision series for Disney+.

The 1995 film "12 Monkeys" was one of the few times a Terry Gilliam film wasn't beset with chaos and production problems. Gilliam is notoriously unlucky — not to mention incredibly headstrong — so many of his features were only made after last-minute disasters, deaths, or other major catastrophes. One can see Gilliam's unluckiness in play in Keith Fulton's and Louis Pepe's 2002 documentary "Lost in La Mancha," which traced the director's first, stalled attempt to make "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote." Also, one doesn't need to be a deep-cut cineaste to know all about the issues Gilliam had with his 1983 sci-fi film "Brazil," a picture that was re-cut multiple times.
For "12 Monkeys," though, everything seemed to work out okay. Based on Chris Marker's 1962 short film "La Jetée," the film begins in 2035 after most of humanity has been killed by a lethal virus. Survivors were forced into underground prisons,...

“What’s in the box?” The very fact that you just heard Brad Pitt‘s unique delivery in your head demonstrates how iconic that line has become. The question and reveal brought David Fincher‘s unrelentingly bleak crime thriller, Seven, to a head (sorry) and confirmed a hopelessly despairing worldview.
The box, of course, contained the severed head of Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), the sweet wife to Pitt’s detective David. The disembodying is the final move by the serial killer John Doe (Kevin Spacey), who based his crimes on Catholicism’s Seven Deadly Sins. Doe killed Tracy out of Envy, driving David to kill him out of anger. Together Wrath and Envy are punished.
Although that upsetting climax was indeed in the script by Andrew Kevin Walker, Pitt recently revealed that some at the studio New Line Cinema wanted something else entirely in that box.

The Starz streaming service lost nearly 200,000 subscribers in the second quarter, but executives are confident about its upcoming content slate.
Breaking up is hard to do, but Lionsgate is still on track to split into two companies by the end of 2024. The process has already been a long and arduous one, but the company still intends to finish with its plan of separating the Lionsgate movie studio from the Starz cable channel and streaming service by the conclusion of December. Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer said on the company’s recent earnings call that splitting into two companies will allow each to “pursue the strategic agendas that are right for them in the current environment.”
Key Details: Starz now has 13.2 million streaming subscribers, plus 8 million more linear customers. A split will allow Starz to potentially be acquired by another media outlet. Lionsgate first filed paperwork to split its movie studio from Starz over a year ago.

This article contains spoilers for "12 Monkeys."
Terry Gilliam's 1995 time-travel freakout "12 Monkeys" begins in the not-so-distant future of 2035, when Earth is recovering from a worldwide plague that wiped out most of humanity. The survivors have moved underground and are kept in cages, overseen by a tyrannical cadre of cruel, tribunal-like scientists. These scientists also have access to a clunky, not-very-accurate time machine that they use to shunt hapless draftees into the past, forcing them to investigate the origins of the virus. The film's protagonist, James Cole (Bruce Willis), is eventually sent back in time to 1990 and 1996, when the plague began.
The time machine, however, toys with the user's brain, so Cole isn't always cogent during his visits to the past. He ends up falling in love with a woman in the past (Madeline Stowe) and discover a 1990s conspiracy involving an eco-terrorism group called the Army of the 12 Monkeys.

Terry Gilliam's 1995 science fiction thriller "12 Monkeys" is a gritty, challenging time-travel film with a bleak ending that reinforces humanity's failures, so it's no surprise that there were moments star Bruce Willis objected to during filming. After all, this is a film where Willis' character Cole is sent throughout history, stripped naked and hosed down, and treated like a combination savior for humanity and human lab rat by the people in charge in his own time. After a super virus released by an animal rights terrorist organization forces all human survivors underground (literally), Cole is tasked with going back in time to try and stop the virus from ever being released. In typical Gilliam fashion, nothing goes well for our hero, who finds himself confronted with the pure existential horror of time loops.

Showrunner Terry Matalas brought on the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast to the spinoff show Star Trek: Picard. The latter show received rave reviews, especially for its last season as they said goodbye to one of the most popular Enterprise crews in the world.
After his phenomenal run as the writer and executive producer of Picard, Matalas will reportedly be working as a showrunner on the upcoming MCU show Vision. The show is spinning off from WandaVision and will follow White Vision after the events of the show. Kevin Feige mentioned that Matalas’ work on Picard got him the job.

Rutger Hauer and Ridley Scott only made one film together, the 1982 classic Blade Runner – but Hauer went on to make two more movies that were scripted by Blade Runner screenwriter David Webb Peoples; the 1985 medieval fantasy film Ladyhawke (where Peoples went uncredited) and the apocalyptic 1989 film The Blood of Heroes, which Peoples also directed. Now War Is Hell: Making Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and Soldier: From Script to Screen author Danny Stewart has dug into the making of The Blood of Heroes with his new book Saluting The Blood of Heroes: Behind the Apocalyptic Film, and copies are available for purchase on Amazon!
Also known as The Salute of the Jugger, The Blood of Heroes has the following synopsis: In a future where most of mankind and technology is wiped out, six people travel from place to place playing a brutal form of football with a dog skull.

Terry Gilliam's 1995 film "12 Monkeys" is a time travel story that was extrapolated from Chris Marker's celebrated 1962 short film "La Jetée," only expanded to fit into 129 minutes. In "12 Monkeys," Bruce Willis plays James Cole, a man trapped in the hellscape of the year 2035. Years before, a virus wiped out most of humankind, forcing the survivors into chasms underground. James is selected to go back in time to uncover information about the impending virus, hoping to find a cure.
Cole, however, is dizzy and disconnected when he travels through time to the year 1990. His confusing stories about coming from the future leave those in the present suspecting that he's mentally ill. Cole is committed to a mental asylum, doped up on drugs, and concerned about the future of his mission. While in the asylum, Cole meets an inmate named Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), a twitchy, paranoid chatterbox who raves about vast government conspiracies.

Rian Johnson's "Looper" is not your standard issue time travel flick. It's also a neo-noir crime yarn that veers into a man-on-the-lam thriller before unexpectedly integrating elements of telekinetic horror. It's a full 118-minute meal that more than satisfies on every subsequent viewing. And while you can easily rattle off its numerous movie influences, the film that most inspired Johnson's crafting of the narrative, particularly as it settles into its second act, is a quieter kind of genre tale.
Most moviegoers probably didn't anticipate what was sold as a Bruce Willis sci-fi action movie to head off in so many surprising directions, but Johnson has been infusing his films with all kinds of unexpected flavors since his critically acclaimed debut "Brick" –- and, frankly, even most cinephiles familiar with Johnson's oeuvre up to that point were caught off-guard by the younger version of the movie's protagonist (Joseph Gordon-Levitt...

Director Terry Gilliam's "12 Monkeys" has truly become one of the classic mainstream sci-fi films of the '90s. Yes, it was very successful in its day, but plenty of box office hits disappear into the background after they leave theaters. This is a film that has endured, in no small part because it played a special part in the careers of its stars. For Bruce Willis, it was a way for the actor to flex his muscles outside of action movies like "Die Hard." For Brad Pitt, it helped ensure that he wasn't going to be typecast as the classically handsome guy for the rest of his life. And he's certainly well disguised in this movie, utilizing a look he, in part, cooked up himself.
