There was an almost 40-year gap between "The Transformers: The Movie" and the new "Transformers One." It's astounding it took that long for another animated film about the Robots in Disguise because that's the medium where they're most at home. It's why in the 40 years this series has existed, there have been more than a dozen cartoons starring the Transformers.
The original 1984 cartoon — "The Transformers" — is an influential series, but frankly, it's not a very good one. The animation was low quality and no one working on that show thought they were making anything more than a toy commercial. But "The Transformers" struck a chord in kids' imaginations and inspired superior retellings, like "Transformers One." If you can't get past the commercialism or silliness of "Transformers," I get it, but there are gems in this franchise like "Beast Wars," "Transformers Animated," and the one of my childhood, "Transformers: Prime."

Spoilers for "Transformers One" to follow.
Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime, the best cartoon hero performance next to Kevin Conroy as Batman. But while Cullen's many performances as the Autobot leader make him inseparable from the character, he's not the only one who's played the part. Some Prime voice actors, like Jon Bailey and Jake Fushee, do Cullen impressions. Others offer more distinctive takes, like Garry Chalk as Optimus Primal in "Beast Wars" or David Kaye in "Transformers Animated." Now, there's a new member of this pantheon: Chris Hemsworth, who voices a young Optimus Prime (then known as "Orion Pax") in the new animated film "Transformers One."
Reactions to the casting in "Transformers One" was mixed. Using celebrity performers instead of seasoned voice actors? Ugh. Does Hemsworth shake off the skepticism and fill these big shoes? He can obviously play a superhero; he's been acting as Thor for 13+ years now.

After years of director Michael Bay bludgeoning viewers to within an inch of their lives with "Transformers" movies filled by nonstop explosions, crass toilet humor, and pretty much rampant instances of racism and misogyny, Paramount correctly realized that fans needed a bit of a change of pace with the 2018 prequel "Bumblebee." In the hands of director Travis Knight and writer Christina Hodson, their mission statement seemed to be erring on the side of character and raising the stakes not through end-of-the-world shenanigans, but by taking characters we'd grown to love and simply putting obstacles in their path. Wrap that up in a heartfelt coming-of-age story with a genuinely likable lead (thanks to Hailee Steinfeld's performance) and the end result was the best movie in the franchise, by default. What a concept!

Since her debut in the 1986 animated "Transformers" movie, Arcee has been one of the most famous Autobots of all. The default girl Transformer, Arcee rocks a feminine pink-and-white color scheme and either a sports car or motorcycle vehicle mode. She's also had a bit of a rough history.
Arcee was considered for the 2007 "Transformers" film (check out concept art of her here), but like a few other characters, she was cut during development. Co-writer Roberto Orci explained the removal to IGN: "The idea of a female Transformer needs its own explanation, and there just wasn't going to be enough time."
The sequel, "Revenge of the Fallen," featured Arcee, but in one of its many faults, it didn't do much with her. Arcee is one of a trio of female motorcycle transformers; she's painted pink while her sisters are blue and purple (media differs on if the trio are separate...

The late Len Wein was one of the most prolific comic book writers of his day. Like many of his contemporaries (especially Marv Wolfman and Gerry Conway), he bounced back and forth between the "Big Two" comic companies, Marvel and DC. Wein left his mark at both, co-creating characters like Swamp Thing and Lucius Fox at DC and the next generation of X-Men at Marvel.
However, his most famous creation is without a doubt Wolverine. Lein worked with then Marvel Editor-In-Chief Roy Thomas and artist John Romita Sr.; the trio debuted Logan in 1974's "Incredible Hulk" issue #180 (written by Wein). In creating Wolverine, Wein wanted to give whoever wrote "X-Men" next a new mutant character. As it turns out, that writer was Wein himself when he crafted "Giant-Size X-Men" #1 with artist Dave Cockrum the following year. Wein eventually ceded the ongoing "X-Men" series to writer Chris Claremont, but...

Voice actor David Kaye still remembers getting the news he'd been cast on "Transformers: Animated." Two weeks after a callback where he read for multiple characters, he got a call from his agent. Kaye, who was driving in downtown LA, answered his phone and heard the news: he'd got the part ... of Optimus Prime. Kaye's response as he swerved his car: "Who?!"
While Kaye had read for Optimus Prime (and noticed voice director Susan Blu liked what he was doing), he walked into the audition expecting to get a different part. The part, in fact, that was furthest from Optimus Prime — Megatron. At the time, Kaye had been voicing Megatron for about a decade, first in "Beast Wars."
During the 1990s and 2000s, Kaye was a staple of Canada's voice-acting pool. Mainframe Entertainment, based in Vancouver, developed "Beast Wars" and recruited local talent, Kaye among them. A few years later,...

The "Transformers" movies are filled with questionable choices, but bringing Peter Cullen back to voice Optimus Prime is not one of them. Reprising the role for the first time since the 1980s, Cullen became the voice of Prime for Millennials and Zoomers, just as he had been for the Gen Xers who watched the original cartoon as children.
In the lead-up to the first movie's release, Paramount Pictures held the online contest "Make Prime Speak" (hosted on www.transformersmovie.com). From October 2-23, 2006, entrants could submit a piece of dialogue (120 characters or less) that they wanted to hear Optimus Prime say in the then-upcoming movie. Per contest rules, Peter Cullen would recite the winning line in his John Wayne-esque baritone.
The line ultimately chosen was "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings." This was Prime's motto, according to his original toy bio, but Cullen never said it before.

[This story contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.]
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. has now brought two intriguing what-if scenarios to fruition.
In 2018’s Creed II, Caple Jr. pitted the sons of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) against each other, and while Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) emerged the victor, the audience still felt sympathy for the Drago family, which seemed all but impossible in Rocky IV (1985). Shortly after the release of Creed II, Paramount talked to Caple Jr. about potentially helming a sequel to Travis Knight’s Bumblebee (2018), but the Ohio native didn’t want to follow up a direct sequel with another direct sequel.
A year or so later, Caple and Paramount resumed talks and agreed on a new take that was influenced by the Transformers: Beast Wars animated storyline, introducing animal-like Transformers known as the Maximals, the planet-eating big bad, Unicron, and his henchmen,...

In a decisive win for the Autobots after being stuck on autopilot for years, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opened to a promising $60.5 million at the domestic box office, more than enough to topple popular holdover Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and win the crowded summer weekend.
Rise of the Beasts — which successfully revives the Hasbro toy-to-movie franchise after several fits and starts — landed on the high end of expectations. While reviews have been mixed, the Paramount and Skydance pic earned an A- CinemaScore from audiences and excellent PostTrak scores.
Younger adults made up the majority of ticket buyers, with 56 percent between ages 18-34, including 34 percent between 18-24, according to PostTrak. The male-skewing film is playing to an ethnically diverse audience (Latino, 32 percent; white, 31 percent; Black, 21 percent; and Asian/Other, 16 percent).
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts also did sizeable business overseas, earning $110 million for an early global roar of $170.5 million.

After five long years, the Transformers franchise is finally heading back to theaters with the release of "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" on June 9. The new movie, which marks the seventh film in the franchise, stars Anthony Ramos ("In the Heights") as an electronics expert and Dominique Fishback ("Swarm") as an artifact researcher who both get unexpectedly thrust into "a '90s globetrotting adventure" with the Autobots and Decepticons.
"Rise of the Beasts" will introduce not only a new set of human characters but new Transformers factions as well, known as the Maximals, the Predacons, and the Terrorcons. These aliens can turn into robotic animals, and while we've seen these types of Transformers in the '90s "Beast Wars" cartoon, we're just now getting to witness them in live-action form. Paramount, Skydance and Hasbro’s “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” began its domestic box office sprint on Thursday with $8.8 million in preview screening grosses. That is on par with (sans inflation) the $8.8 million earned via Tuesday previews for “Transformers: The Last Knight” in June of 2017 and the $8.75 million Thursday preview gross of “Transformers: Age of Extinction” in 2014. “Bumblebee” nabbed $2.85 million in previews amid a holiday-season Wed-Sun debut in late 2018.
Pre-release projections pegged the film for a $50-$60 million opening weekend, and that’s what these Thursday grosses point toward.
A Thursday-to-weekend multiplier on par with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($118 million from a $17 million Thursday) and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($120 million/$17.4 million) gets it to $61 million. A more optimistic comparison to “Fast X” ($67 million/$7.5 million) or “John Wick: Chapter 4” ($73 million/$8.9 million) has it earning between $73 million and $78 million by Sunday night.

The bots are back.
From Paramount and Skydance, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts bit off a promising $8.8 million in previews as it battles for the hearts and souls of summer moviegoers. The preview grosses include select fan screenings on Wednesday and regular Thursday showings.
The tentpole is considered a direct sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee and a prequel to the first Transformers live-action film series that starred Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox. The movie, directed by Steven Caple Jr., opens after a five-year hiatus for the series and hopes to revive the franchise.
Rise of the Beasts follows Optimus Prime and the Autobots on their biggest challenge yet, when a new threat capable of destroying the entire planet emerges. Together with the Maximals — who make their big-screen debut — they must save the world.
The human heroes of the story include new characters portrayed by Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback.

To paraphrase Dan Olson’s excellent Nft video essay Line Goes Up, we’re going to have to deal with a lot of vocabulary and a lot of complexity in this review. Some of it will fill some of you with a nostalgic glow and some of it will sound like white noise and make your head hurt. What you do need to know is that you don’t need to know or care about any of it. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is going to rock on regardless so you might as well enjoy the ride.

When it comes to the Transformers franchise, one tends to grade on a curve: “Well, this one wasn’t as bad as Revenge of the Fallen…” or “That one was a little better than Age of Extinction…” When at least four of the seven films in a franchise are all but unwatchable, damning with low expectations is where we end up.
With the seventh and latest film, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, one might say, “Well, it wasn’t as good as Bumblebee…” but in this case, that doesn’t instantly spell doom. Rise of the Beasts is easily the best movie in the main narrative since the original Transformers in 2007, for which this acts as a prequel of sorts (as well as a sequel to Bumblebee—the series is circling back on itself!). And the lessons learned from the Bumblebee spinoff, the first film in the franchise not weighed...

Los Angeles, June 8 (Ians) Peter Dinklage, best known for his roles of Lord Tyrion Lannister in ‘Game Of Thrones’ and Bolivar Trask in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ spoke about his upcoming role in ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ as its antagonist Scourge, whom he will be voicing.
In an interview with ‘Screen Rant’, he described Scourge.
Dinklage said: “He’s the boss, but he also has a boss in Unicron. He has to answer to that guy who eats planets, so he’s a bit of a threat. And I think it’s just because he’s treated so poorly by that guy, he just transfers that down to his minions.

Even in this age of pop culture entertainment, when fans gorge on the spectacle of cosmic abstract monstrosities engaging in battle with sentient mammals and literal mythological gods, the prospect of seeing opposing factions of giant robots converting into vehicles has got fans hooked. Yes, we are talking about the Transformers media franchise that started its journey in the 80s as an attempt to westernize the Japanese toy brand Takara’s “Diaclone” and “Micro Change” lines and gradually sprawled into one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time, comprising innumerable toys, comics, animated content, and multimillion-dollar movies.
Previously, a film series based on the Transformers franchise helmed by Michael Bay continued for a decade and consisted of five aggressively mediocre, overly stylized CGI cluster dump, run-of-the-mill action movies. After the end of the series, later regarded as Bayverse, the Transformers prequel series, starting with the 2018 entry Bumblebee, brought the franchise...

Travis Knight's joyful 2018 children's fantasy by way of sci-fi adventure film, "Bumblebee," was a breath of fresh air for the live-action "Transformers" movies. It also marked a triumphant return to the Spielbergian formula of Michael Bay's original 2007 film (i.e. a human befriends the lovable puppy dog in Autobot form known as Bumblebee), minus the, well, Bay-isms that make it difficult to give that first movie a full-throated recommendation.
Sadly, nearly a decade of Bay-directed "Transformers" sequels ranging from okay-ish ("Dark of the Moon") to actively terrible (basically the rest of them) had taken its toll on audience interest by that point, resulting in "Bumblebee" becoming the lowest-grossing live-action entry in the franchise to date. As such, the movie's incoming sequel, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts," is tasked with having to further rejuvenate the property while at the same time finding a way to progress its overarching narrative...

Steven Caple Jr. is known for grounded, character-focused stories about the sort of people you might run into every day, without a giant robot fight in sight. Films like The Land and A Different Tree. Even his most recent film, Creed II, only features fights on a decidedly human scale. But Paramount believed this made him the perfect name to take over the core Transformers franchise after Michael Bay’s departure.
“They wanted me to bring that grit and character from my dramas to make people feel for these robots but keep the action and adrenaline high,” Caple recalls.
More Than Meets the Eye
Caple was already a lifelong fan of the franchise, but unlike many fans, his love of Transformers began not with the toys but the animated 1986 movie.
“That was my first introduction to it.

The summer movie season is officially here, and 2023 will be welcoming back a staple of blockbuster cinema for the past decade and a half with "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts." The live-action movies focused on the Autobots and Decepticons have raked in billions in ticket sales since Michael Bay kicked things off in 2007 with "Transformers." Yet, it's been just shy of five years since "Bumblebee" ushered in a new era for the alien robots. The wait is nearly over and, even though it's been a long time, Paramount isn't going to have audiences trapped in a theater for an indulgent amount of time, as the latest entry clocks in at just under two hours.
As reported by Collider, "Rise of the Beasts" will hit theaters with a runtime of 1 hour and 57 minutes. That means it will be just a hair longer than "Bumblebee" (1 hour and 54 minutes), and remarkably shorter than Bay's fifth and final installment,...

Each film offers something unique for fans, whether introducing the Maximals to the live-action Transformers franchise or depicting the Turtles using bold art.
During Paramount’s presentation, Seth Rogen took the stage to introduce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. “I finally made a movie that if you show it to your children, you’re not a terrible parent,” Rogen joked.

If you’re a Transformers fan of a certain age, there’s one name in particular sure to conjure a sense of awe and fear: Unicron. No, it’s not some unexpected Covid variant, but one of the deadliest foes in the robots-in-disguise franchise – a Galactus-esque planet-eater who originally menaced the Autobots in 1986’s animated favourite Transformers: The Movie. Now, he’s back to strike fear into our heroes’ metal hearts in live-action in Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts – colliding the post-Bumblebee movie universe with the wild lore of ‘90s animated series Beast Wars, and throwing the biggest of baddies into the mix too. Check out the supersized trailer here.
There’s plenty to unpack there – away from the Unicron devastation, this one centres on Anthony Ramos’s winged Airazor. They arrive into the mythology with a dire warning – and with Unicron looming, there’s much to be worried about.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts: Newest trailer shows an all-out war as Unicron descends upon Earth
The saga of the robots in disguise continues as Paramount drops the newest trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. There’s certainly more than meets the eye with this installment as it sees the introduction of the popular Unicron villain from the original cartoon. Unicron was also featured in the 1986 movie, Transformers: The Motion Picture. Fans of the series Beast Wars, which took place around the time frame that serves as the setting of this film, and featured animal incarnations of the Autobots and Decepticons, will be excited to see more peeks at the Maximals as an all-out war features a number of characters from the Autobots and Maximals fight side-by-side.
The official synopsis from Paramount reads,
“Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduce a...

It's a new, flashier, and altogether more beastly era for "Transformers" these days. Paramount's consistent top-earning franchise has undergone a bit of a creative shakeup in the years since Michael Bay went his separate ways after 2017's "Transformers: The Last Knight." The makeover truly began with the Hailee Steinfeld-starring "Bumblebee," the back-to-basics spin-off/prequel film that helped return the spectacle-driven series to its roots.
Gone were the overly busy and incredibly complicated visual designs of the past, replaced by much more familiar Transformers designs and a heartwarming coming-of-age film right up director Travis Knight's alley.
This time around, the series is switching gears once more and expanding the scope to tell one of the most popular storylines in the entire franchise: "Beast Wars."
"Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" is set to give the live-action treatment to what many fans have anxiously awaited for a long, long time.

With a new trailer on the way. Let this article be your (Optimus) primer on everything that Rise Of The Beasts maybe will, definitely won’t, and probably should take from the original cartoon.
What is Beast Wars, and what does it mean for Rise Of The Beasts?
Launched in 1996 as a set of toys and a high-tech (for its day) computer-animated TV series, Beast Wars was the first major reboot of the original Transformers franchise. Instead of the Autobots and Decepticons – warring armies of alien robots disguised as human vehicles – Beast Wars brought us the Maximals and Predacons, warring armies of alien robots disguised as, well, beasts. Tarantulas turns into a tarantula, Rattrap turns into a rat, Waspinator turns into… well, you get the idea. The animated series took this idea and ran with it; given the job of selling the premise to a new generation of kids and old-school Transformers fans,...

The Robots in Disguise return this summer on June 9th. And now, the official Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Twitter account has just dropped a new promotional photo of the lineup of characters in the film. The gallery of heroes featured here show off some familiar faces like Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and Arcee. A new addition to the Autobot team is Mirage (voiced by Pete Davidson), who transforms into a Porsche 911 Carrera Rs 3.8.

The new breed of transformers made their way into the 2023 Super Bowl with a new look at Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
The seventh installment of the Paramount Pictures franchise, inspired by the ’90s Beast Wars cartoon, unveils the next bots known as the Maximals, the Predacons and the Terrocons. Instead of cars, they are machines that convert to animal-like forms.
In this ‘90s globetrotting adventure, premiering 15 years after the original Transformers, the new breed joins the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons. “There are different breeds of Transformers,” Caple previously said at a virtual press event in June 2021. “In our particular film, they are prehistoric animals who travel through time and space, and we find them here on Earth.”
In an action-packed teaser trailer released in December 2022, audiences saw the return of Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) engaging with Optimus Primal (voiced by Ron Perlman), leader of the Maximals.

It has been just shy of five years since we last saw the "Transformers" franchise grace the silver screen, with 2018's "Bumblebee" serving as a soft but welcome reset for the series. Following Michael Bay's "Transformers: The Last Knight," things had become stale and audiences were showing major signs of fatigue with the sameness of it all. Paramount is now finally ready to bring back the robots in disguise for another big-screen adventure in the form of "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts." And, thanks to the Super Bowl, we've got a new look at what the studio has cooked up.
Indeed, Paramount felt it worth spending a boatload of cash to showcase the movie during the big game and, for longtime fans of the franchise, it's easy to see why as we are finally getting some live-action "Beast Wars" goods. This is something fans have been hoping to see for quite some time.

2022 has been such a bright year with several amazing movies but we are already looking forward to the new year. Quite frankly, it appears like 2023 promises more fun and entertainment than 2022 with several blockbusters lined up for the year — both new and returning titles.
Here is a quick highlight of the 30 most anticipated movies of 2023 and their release dates.
1. “Magic Mike’s Last Dance”
Steven Soderbergh announced in 2021 that he would give Channing Tatum and his band of male strippers a last dance. The director is back with a follow-up to his 2015 comedy-drama “Magic Mike Xxl” titled “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.”
In this sequel, times are a bit hard for Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) so he decides to have a final dance at the request of a wealthy woman. However, the woman seems to have ulterior motives. This is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies of 2022.

The first teaser trailer for “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” has become one of the most-watched trailers ever.
The first look at the Steve Caple Jr.-directed sci-fi actioner earned 494 million global, cross-platform views in the first week, according to Paramount. That was well above the other big trailers released last Thursday (courtesy of Ccxp), namely “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (182 million) and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (77 million).
Measured viewership was at 238 million on day one alone, above any previous theatrical trailer in Paramount’s history, and in fourth place for that first 24-hour cycle behind only the second “Avengers: Endgame” trailer (268 million), the first “Avengers: Endgame” trailer (289 million) and the first trailer to Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (355.5 million).

Paramount revealed the title for the seventh installment of the “Transformers” franchise on Tuesday at a virtual event hosted by director Steven Caple Jr., producer Lorenzo Dibonaventura and stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback.
“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” will be centered on the “Beast Wars” storyline made popular in the 1990s cartoon, in which the transforming robots turn into prehistoric animals instead of vehicles.
“There are different breeds of Transformers,” Caple Jr. said. “In our particular film, they are prehistoric animals who travel through time and space, and we find them here on Earth.”
Like 2018’s “Bumblebee,” which took place in 1987, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” will be a period film set in 1994 in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Machu Pichu, Peru. G1 favorite Optimus Prime will return for the seventh installment and will once again be voiced by Peter Cullen.

The “Transformers” movie franchise will take on the “Beast Wars” storyline from the late 1990s in “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and director Steven Caple Jr. announced on Tuesday.
Production is just starting on the feature, but Di Bonaventura and Caple still did reveal a fair amount about “Rise of the Beasts.” Like Travis Knight’s 2018 film “Bumblebee,” which was set in 1987, the new film will be set in 1994, so as not to intersect with the five Transformers movies directed by Michael Bay.
Unlike “Bumblebee,” which Di Bonaventura said was deliberately designed to be a smaller, “more intimate” movie, “Rise of the Beasts” will be “a spectacle story … in the tradition of the Bay films.” The action will move to New York City, and will incorporate two new human characters: Elena (Dominique Fishback), an artifact researcher who keeps having credit for her work taken by her...

When I think of all the thought-provoking, entertaining, and downright amazing animated series from the 1990s, Gargoyles always comes to mind, which is why I'm especially thrilled that Neca is bringing the iconic character Goliath (who was voiced by Keith David) from the animated series to life in a new collectible figure this summer.
The new Goliath figure was announced on Neca's Facebook page, and below you can check out photos and details of the new collectible, which has a 16-inch wingspan and will be taking flight for shipments this July. To learn more and to view the full gallery of photos, visit Neca's website.
In addition to Goliath, Neca announced on Twitter that they have "5 more figures completed and more in development" in their Gargoyles line, so keep an eye out for future figures based on the series!

In the 21st Century alone we’ve seen the brief crazes for big budget historical epics, adaptations of every YA book series to sell a decent number of copies, revisionist fairy tales and of course, the cinematic universe.
Indeed, now that Marvel and DC are both hedging their bets on the multiverse for the foreseeable future, there’s every chance that the model could find itself being applied to more and more franchises. In fact, insider Daniel Richtman is claiming this week that Transformers is already considering the possibility, after reporting that the in-development reboot is set to cross over with Beast Wars in a massive multiversal event.
