Radu and Rosie discover a teddy bear floating in space and Radu retrieves it to give to Rosie as a present for being the only person on board who is nice to him. Radu tries to hand it to her, but Rosie insists that tests be run on the toy before it's taken from its container. Radu puts it back and gives the container to Rosie. Meanwhile, Catalina celebrates the week-long holiday of Zabagabee, a Saturnian holiday held for the joy of life, which calls for nearly-endless dancing and chanting, in increasingly elaborate costuming.
Slowly, Radu begins to hallucinate that his friends have hideous faces and starts to become very cold. Thelma takes his temperature and notes it to be below normal, so Radu is given leave to go rest rather than perform navigation drills with Harlan. Catalina continues to dance, and when Harlan runs into her, she fakes a sprained ankle to try to get out of it, reporting that she finds Zabagabee to be the "most exhausting holiday in the galaxy."
Over time, the illness worsens, and Radu becomes colder and colder, developing icicles and frost on his hair. He starts to believe that his friends have all changed and are trying to convince him that he's the one who's sick instead, or to harm him and make him like they are. Still seeing them all as hideous and speaking with terrible voices, he becomes frightened and eventually goes berserk after Thelma comes to ask him to do the navigation drills. He damages Thelma and hides in the engine room, where Catalina finds him. She has to Scream to drive him away when he thinks she's going to harm him.
Commander Goddard and Miss Davenport find and try to fix Thelma and the Commander recalls fighting Andromedans like Radu during the war, citing their strength and endurance as very good reasons to be afraid of Radu right now. He puts out a shipwide alert for everyone to stay away from him, just as Radu arrives at the command post, attacking Harlan. Radu overpowers the Earther and Rosie, who figures out what caused all this when Bova suggests maybe an unknown object infected him, goes to find him, discovering Radu at the airlock controls, with Harlan yelling from inside. She tries to talk him down and get him to remember her, and when he tries to attack her, Rosie's heat powers break his coldsnap and he regains his faculties, just as the outer airlock hatch starts to open. Rosie runs to escape the vacuum, and Radu forces open the inner door, dragging Harlan back in, fighting the vacuum pull.
Later, Harlan complains again to Commander Goddard about not trusting Radu when Radu is apologizing for everything, but the commander reminds him that Radu did save his life... at least when he wasn't hallucinating. Radu then dances with Catalina, whose festive cane he broke during his rampage, saying that he owes her, and the others join in.
