The critically-acclaimed “Aviva” (Outsider/Strand) casts both male and female dancers as both of the romantic leads, throwing out conventions of gender and sexuality in a love story that features some gorgeous choreography. Boaz Yakin’s film was programmed at the 2020 SXSW festival, and the Blu-ray features behind-the-scenes footage of dance rehearsals.
Also available: Stand-up Steve Byrne wrote and directed the comics-on-the-road saga “The Opening Act” (Rlje Films), featuring such industry vets as Jimmy O. This Star Trek: Discovery review contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 8.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 9
The Mirror Universe works best when we know the characters and world it warps well. The fascinations of visiting the Mirror Universe often come in observing the characters (and actors) we know and love exhibit wildly different behavior (and looks)—for example, the franchise’s original visit to the Mirror Universe came in Season 2 of The Original Series, only after we had properly gotten use to a Spock without facial hair. This is why the Discovery‘s original visit to the Mirror Universe back in Season 1, while not without its high points, was a bit of a waste of the Mirror Universe setting. We didn’t know the characters and world well enough at this point in the show’s run to appreciate the Terran deviations from the show’s status quo.

George Clooney and Julianna Margulies starred opposite each other for the first five seasons of NBC’s medical-drama hit “ER,” but if it wasn’t for Clooney, Margulies’ Nurse Carol Hathaway might have died in the pilot.
“I feel so grateful that you were the one who actually stopped me from taking [another] job, because you were the only one who actually cared enough to call and say, ‘By the way, don’t take the job. The Criterion Channel’s stellar offerings are continuing next month with a selection of new releases, retrospective, series, and more. Leading the pack is, of course, a horror lineup perfectly timed for Halloween, featuring ’70s classics and underseen gems, including Abel Ferrara’s The Driller Killer (pictured above), Tobe Hopper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, early films by David Cronenberg, Wes Craven, and Brian De Palma, Bill Gunn’s Ganja & Hess, and more.
Also of note is a New Korean Cinema retrospective, featuring a new introduction by critic Grady Hendrix and a conversation between directors Bong Joon Ho and Park Chan-wook, whose Barking Dogs Never Bite, The Host, Mother, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance are part of the lineup, as well as Lee Myung-se’s Nowhere to Hide, and more titles to be announced. Bong’s short Influenza will also arrive, paired with Michael Haneke’s Caché.

It’s been 10 years since Katy Perry’s mega-blockbuster Teenage Dream set an almost stratospherically high bar for modern Californicated pop bliss in the 21st century, becoming the first album to land five songs at the top of the charts since Michael Jackson’s Bad. That’s a tough act to follow, and like Jackson in the post-Bad era, Perry struggled to come up with the right second act, failing to keep pace with an increasingly ambitious and arty pop world as she tried genre-leaping introspection on 2013’s Prism and therapeutic wokeness on 2017’s Witness.

With Halloween Kills no longer arriving in theaters this October, a lot of horror fans may find themselves watching the last movie in the franchise instead this spooky season. Blumhouse 2018’s Halloween rebootquel wiped out all the previous films in the saga apart from the first one, with its opening credits taking us all the way back to 1978 by recreating the original’s iconic jack-o-lantern credits sequence.
And it’s here that there’s a sly Michael Myers easter egg that you might have missed. Redditer u/bingy253 rewatched the film and noticed that, when the camera frames the pumpkin in a certain way, its face resembles The Shape’s silhouette. Specifically, the jack-o-lantern’s right eye looks like Michael’s head in profile and its nose is the same shape as his ever-handy butcher’s knife.

Sunday Update: Through the first full weekend of Chinese cinemas resuming operations in low-risk areas across the country, local moviegoers demonstrated increased demand. The Friday-Saturday-Sunday session was worth nearly $13M from all titles, rising on each of the days. Play was led by Universal’s Dolittle with a 3-day tally of $5.2M from about 3,000 screens. This was the first time the Robert Downey Jr-starrer hit the market, having been sidelined as the coronavirus shut down theaters. Sony/Bona’s Bloodshot came in at $2.8M, according to ticketing platform Maoyan.
As previously noted, these sorts of numbers are not typical of China — where only about 40% of cinemas are currently open and have 30% capacity restrictions — but they are notable. It’s encouraging that we’ve seen increases through the frame in the world’s second biggest box office market and bodes well for the further new Hollywood titles that are dated in the coming weeks.

A bigger and brighter film debut couldn’t be imagined … Doris Day became America’s sweetheart in Michael Curtiz’s peppy production, graced with a witty script and several catchy, radio-ready song hits. And the color is better than new in this impressive Blu-ray remastering job — Woody Bredell’s Technicolor hues are literally eye-popping. It’s great fun seeing Ms. Day invent her natural, fresh-faced screen persona right before our eyes.

Saturday Night Live star Michael Che is getting his own sketch show on HBO Max.
The streaming service has ordered a six-part untitled series from the comedian, Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video and Universal Television.
Each episode of the show will follow a theme or incident, such as police brutality, unemployment and romance and use sketches and vignettes to illustrate what it feels like to experience this from a Black vantage point.
The streamer said the show was less about being “right” and more about being honest, even at the risk of being controversial.
Untitled Michael Che Project will be exec produced by Che, Lorne Michaels, and Erin Doyle.
Given it’s produced by SNL’s Michaels, there’s no suggestion that Che is leaving the NBC late-night comedy, but it is somewhat surprising that the show is being made for WarnerMedia’s HBO Max rather than NBCUniversal’s own streaming service Peacock,...

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

It’s already been confirmed that Luna will reprise his role in the series, as will fellow “Rogue One” star Alan Tudyk, who played the K-2So droid in the film.

With the sports world having going dark more than a month ago due to Covid-19, wiping out college basketball’s March Madness, NBA and NHL playoffs and the start of baseball season, what’s a fan to watch now? (Here’s hoping the answer is not more H.O.R.S.E. tournaments.)
Nielsen tackled that consequential question in a new report Thursday that looked closely at March metrics, finding that live news, feature films and social media are helping to fill the void. The measurement firm found live TV viewing on Sunday among heavy sports viewers rose 24% from early to late March. Subscription video on demand viewing nearly doubled.

In these strange times, one can find some comfort hearing stories from one of cinema’s most adventurous actors. Recipient of this year’s BFI Fellowship, Tilda Swinton recently took part in a fascinating one-hour, career-spanning conversation discussing her formative early days as an actor including deeply collaborative creative relationships with Derek Jarman and Sally Potter, as well as working with Lynne Ramsay, Bong Joon Ho, and her Oscar-winning work in Michael Clayton. (Fun side note: she had never watched the Oscars ceremony before winning.)
First, however, she also shared eleven of her favorite films, in case you need some viewing recommendations during self-isolation:

In its letter to shareholders released Tuesday along with its fourth-quarter earnings, Netflix offered what has become its customary sprinkling of select viewership data, but also explained a larger change in its methodology.
“As we’ve expanded our original content, we’ve been working on how to best share content highlights
that demonstrate popularity,” the letter said. Given that we now have titles with widely varying lengths – from short episodes (e.g. Special at around 15 minutes) to long films (e.g. The Highwaymen at 132 minutes), we believe that reporting households viewing a title based on 70% of a single episode of a series or of an entire film, which we have been doing, makes less sense. We are now reporting on households (accounts) that chose to watch a given title.”
Under the new system, the letter continued, “Short and long titles are treated equally, leveling the playing field for all types...

Will Smith says he might owe his entire career to action movie director Michael Bay’s insistence that he take his shirt off in that one scene in the original “Bad Boys.”
The actor was on “The Tonight Show” to promote “Bad Boys For Life,” the third installment in the “Bad Boys” franchise that began in 1995, in which he stars opposite Martin Lawrence.
“So Michael Bay was shooting this scene, and I wanted to have my shirt on. And Michael was like, ‘Dude, I’m gonna make you a frickin’ movie star! Take your shirt off,'” Smith told Jimmy Fallon on Thursday. You can watch the original running-with-a-gun scene here.

Exclusive: Two-time Oscar nominee John Travolta has inked with ICM Partners.
Travolta has amassed more than $3.8 billion at the global box office throughout his career from a huge cinematic résumé that includes Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Face/Off, The Taking of Pelham 123, Savages, Hairspray, Michael, Wild Hogs, Urban Cowboy, Swordfish, Ladder 49, A Civil Action, Staying Alive and Pulp Fiction.
The Englewood, NJ, native scored his first screen role in California as a fall victim in a 1972 episode of Emergency! He landed the star-making role of Vinnie Barbarino in the ABC sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, with big-screen breaks during his run on the show in Brian De Palma’s Carrie and the disco-drenched Saturday Night Fever soon after. While the latter movie showed off his dancing skills (along with the Staying Alive and Pulp Fiction), Grease rose the profile on Travolta’s singing. His duets with Olivia Newton-John from the musical included the No.

On June 27th 1997, John Woo, director of Hong Kong action classics such as Hard Boiled (1992) and A Better Tomorrow (1986), released his third Hollywood film, following the relative success of Van-Damme vehicle Hard Target (1993), and nuclear-weapon-nonsense, Broken Arrow (1996). It was called Face/Off, and featured the twin-handed heavyweights of Oscar winner-come-blockbuster action hero Nicolas Cage, and Vincent Vega comeback kid, John Travolta, in a high-concept thriller so ridiculously brilliant, that any subsequent serpents on planes, or Jason Statham dicky-ticker actioners, feel tame by comparison.

If you need a younger James Gandolfini, who made the character of Tony Soprano so iconic, then you just look for a younger Gandolfini. And that’s exactly what the ‘Sopranos’ creator did.

Markus Schleinzer is a filmmaker who knows how to wait for a payoff: Take the dry in-joke, for example, of waiting seven years to follow his 2011 debut “Michael” with a film called “Angelo.” His tartly brilliant second feature is awash with slow-building irony, though as with his first, there’s precious little mirth in its devastating kicker. An interpretive biopic of Angelo Soliman — an African man kidnapped into slavery as a child, who subsequently rose and fell through the ranks of 18th-century Viennese high society — Schleinzer’s film takes a chillingly but aptly clinical view of a life treated as an amusing human experiment by all but the man living it. Behavior is painstakingly observed and notes are extensively taken, before “Angelo” tersely delivers its own findings on the toxicity of the culture that colonized its title character.
Lest the “Michael”/”Angelo” segue lead viewers to expect a clear partner piece to Schleinzer’s debut,...

AngeloLuis Ortega’s El Angel (2018), an Argentinian biopic of 70s pretty-boy serial killer Carlos Puch, establishes its baseline tone in its first scene, in which Puch (Lorenzo Ferro) plays an LP in a house he has broken into, and Ortega amplifies the song Reservoir Dogs-style as Puch dances under the credits. The film sticks with this energetic, amoral agenda, and manages it pretty well from a craft perspective; along the way it shows a fair amount of intelligence and psychological insight that sometimes coexists awkwardly with its wish to entertain. Puch hooks up with a family of thieves that includes his classmate Ramon and enjoys his introduction to firearms so much that the family is unwittingly dragged along with him into the world of homicide. Puch tends to shoot when surprised or irritated, and afterwards isn’t overly sensitive to consequences: the character retains an odd innocence for a psychopath.

Michael Jackson fans may be a bit disappointed during this worldwide celebration of the icon’s diamond birthday. Instead, three appeals court judges ruled on Tuesday that Sony and the Michael Jackson estate cannot be held accountable for the three disputed songs (“Breaking News,” “Keep Your Head Up” and...

Despite recent reports, Sony Music Entertainment is not admitting to putting out fake Michael Jackson songs. In 2014, a fan named Vera Serova filed a class-action lawsuit against the record company. She alleged that the King of Pop may not be the lead singer heard on the songs "Breaking News," "Monster" and "Keep Your Head Up," featured on the 2010 album Michael. It is the first of two posthumous LPs released after Jackson's 2009 death. "No one has conceded that Michael Jackson did not sing on the songs," Sony Music said in a statement to Variety on Friday. Updated: Articles published on Thursday claimed that Sony Music had “admitted” in a court hearing earlier this week that three tracks on “Michael,” the 2010 Michael Jackson album released posthumously by Sony’s Epic Records, contained lead vocals that were not actually by Michael Jackson — an assertion that the company denied in a statement released late Friday morning.
“No one has conceded that Michael Jackson did not sing on the songs,” said Zia Modabber of Katten Muchin Rosenman Llp, who is representing both Sony Music and the Jackson estate in this matter. “The hearing Tuesday was about whether the First Amendment protects Sony Music and the Estate and there has been no ruling on the issue of whose voice is on the recordings.”
The songs in question are “Breaking News,” “Monster” and “Keep Your Head Up,” which were released on “Michael,” the first album from a splashy ten-album 2010 deal between Jackson...

Career Watch is a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there.
Thanks to strong recognition overseas, at 64 John Travolta still carries the clout that gets movies made. But this is not always a good thing: Travolta’s passion project, “Gotti,” debuted in Cannes but opened to $1.7 million amid derisive reviews (Tomatometer: 0%).
Bottom Line: After strutting out of Broadway and television into ’70s movie stardom, the Irish-Italian Travolta languished in the ’80s until Quentin Tarantino gave him his 1994 comeback as hitman Vincent Vega in “Pulp Fiction.” That movie returned Travolta’s swagger and while he hasn’t topped it, Travolta has surfed many career dips and swells without completely alienating his aging fan base. But “Gotti” may be the tipping point.

'Murphy Brown' Actor Robert Pastorelli Found Dead
News outlets reported today that actor Robert Pastorelli, best known for his role as Eldin the Housepainter on Murphy Brown, was found dead from a possible drug-related death; he was 49. Pastorelli was discovered at 3 p.m. on Monday in the bathroom of his Los Angeles home alongside drug paraphernalia, and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death; initial police reports cited it as a "possible accidental death." Starting his career in the mid-80s, Pastorelli immediately found fame on the Candice Bergen sitcom Murphy Brown, where he played irasicble housepainter Eldin, whose neverending work on Bergen's home made him an integral part of the show. Staying with the show from 1988 through 1994, Pastorelli moved on to a number of small parts and TV guest appearances, appearing most notably in the films Sister Act 2, Eraser, Michael and Heist; he also appeared in the 2001 TV adaptation of South Pacific and played the lead in the short-lived but well-received Americanized version of Brit TV hit Cracker. Pastorelli had just completed work on the Get Shorty sequel Be Cool, scheduled for release later this year. He is survived by his daughter with Charemon Jonovich, who died in 1999 in what was determined an accidental shotgun death. --Prepared by IMDb staff...
