‘Cross,’ ‘Bad Sisters,’ and ‘In Cold Water’ bring a wave of crime titles to streaming this week.
How are we feeling, America? One thing voters can be thankful for after the final results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election is that there will be no further political ads on top TV channels or streaming services, and that’s a gain that all audiences can agree on regardless of affiliation.
The onset of a new week also means a new set of TV and streaming premieres. Some networks were holding back big premieres to avoid competing with election coverage, and I’ve compiled my usual list of the best titles to stream this week below!

Exclusive: After landing his first Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his work in the fourth and final season of HBO’s Succession, Alan Ruck has joined the all-star cast that has assembled to support Marc Maron in In Memoriam, the forthcoming comedy from Thelma producer Invention Studios.
His role is being kept under wraps, as has been the case with all supporting castings thus far.
Written and directed by Rob Burnett (The Fundamentals of Caring), this is the story of a veteran Hollywood actor (Maron) who becomes obsessed with securing a spot in the Academy Awards’ “In Memoriam” montage after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. This leads to a heartfelt exploration of ego, humility, and legacy.
Also part of the stacked cast, as previously announced, are Talia Ryder, Lily Gladstone, Sharon Stone, Judy Greer, Justin Long and Michael McKean. Invention Studios’ Nicholas Weinstock and Divya D’Souza are producing alongside Maron,...

Peacock added 3 million subscribers this summer (July 1 to September 30), when it was the streaming home to the Paris Olympics. Simultaneously, the service lost $436 million in the quarter. Peacock now has 36 million subs.
The NBCUniversal-owned streaming service had lost 1 million subs in the spring quarter; NBCU is owned by Comcast, which reported third quarter earnings on Thursday morning. Overall, the company topped media analysts’ expectations.
Wall Street forecast Comcast would report earnings per share of $1.06 on revenue of $31.64 billion; Comcast reported Eps of $1.12 on $32.07 billion in revenue.
As we previously reported, Antenna, a research company that charts the subscription economy, observed 2.8 million Peacock signups over the first week (July 25-31) of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The key thing here for Peacock is that the newcomers stuck around. The new subscribers were also driven by an NFL game in Brazil that was exclusive to Peacock.

For a few years in the '90s, it seemed like Helen Hunt was destined to be a mainstay on the big and small screen alike forever. The actor landed her earliest movie role in 1977, playing a teenager in the disaster movie "Rollercoaster," which featured a singularly weird plot about a man trying to bomb an amusement park ride. Hunt continued to act over the next decade, taking roles in films like "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "Peggy Sue Got Married," plus the popular doctor drama "St. Elsewhere." But it wasn't until the '90s, when Hunt earned a trifecta of great, memorable roles, that she truly became a household name.
Hunt's big break came from "Mad About You," a 1992 sitcom in which she played one half of a New York City newlywed couple opposite Paul Reiser. Plotlines for the show mined married life for humor, but they...

‘Falling Stars’ Review: ‘Twister’ Meets ‘The Leftovers’ in This Singularly Striking Witch Apocalypse
Too many movies waste time convincing their own characters that the supernatural is real. But in XYZ Films’ striking horror gem “Falling Stars,” the people of San Bernardino County already know that witches exist. They’ve spent years coping with their neighbors’ instantaneous abductions, as spelled out in a cold open that shows a young woman running along a winding road. One moment, she’s bouncing to the beat of her footsteps, enjoying the desert air, and surveying the sprawling landscape; the next, she’s just gone.
That scene and many others in this haunting poem of a film are shot partly overhead. Although “Watch the skies!” is advice typically reserved for alien outings, that bird’s eye view proves essential to co-directors Gabriel Biencyzycki and Richard Karpala’s stirring reflection on community, survival, and the unforeseeable acts of God. Caught somewhere between 1996’s “Twister” and HBO’s “The Leftovers,...

Paul Scheer has a small part in “Twisters,” but the actor managed to make an outsized impression on theatergoers after a lie about being a “legacy character” took off on social media. As the actor explained to Jon Lovett on the “Lovett or Leave It” podcast, his original bit making the claim took off so much that he just started going along when asked about it.
“I’m like, ‘Yeah, [I’m the] the only legacy character.’ And then I have other people like, ‘He’s lying. He’s lying.’ I’m like, ‘Yes, of course I’m lying,'” Scheer said.
The story began while Scheer was doing red-carpet interviews for the film ahead of its release. Due to his small role in the movie, he didn’t think there would be a lot of interest in his character, but he wanted to be enthusiastic about the film. So, despite spending just hours on set,...

Jan de Bont's film was the second-highest-grossing film of 1996 and had a very significant impact on popular culture, becoming a fan favorite and influencing storm chasers all over. There was never a continuation until now with Lee Isaac Chung’s stand alone sequel‘Twisters’ (2024), and now a new crew will be chasing a few storms together. The late actor Bill Paxton was more than just a versatile actor, for he was a true Hollywood legend who carved a name for himself through his legendary portrayals in some of the biggest science fiction franchises of all time. Having passed away in 2017, the legend left behind a unique legacy and the rare distinction of being the only actor to be killed on-screen by the iconic trio: a Terminator, an Alien, and a Predator.

Similar to how people went on vacation with revenge as Covid simmered down, so did they return to cinemas this summer.
Even though this season’s domestic box office take of $3.6 billion, per Comscore, is roughly a half-billion lighter than last summer’s $4.09 billion, chalk that up largely to a Marvel movie missing from the traditional early May summer kickoff slot due to the hangover from the Hollywood strikes (Deadpool & Wolverine didn’t arrive until late July). Last summer, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 delivered $359 million stateside upon its May 5 launch — enough said.
The town freaked out because we were going through a dry period, fearing that moviegoing was hearing the death gong. But theatrical showed a nonstop resilience once Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die lit the spark in early June with a $56.5M debut, commencing a flood of event films.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Spawn was Written by Mike Holtz, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Almost everything about Todd McFarlane’s Spawn is purely adult fare. Even then… it’s not something you’d ever consider everyone’s cup of tea. Sure, there’s a superhero with a killer costume. But he’s from Hell and happens to be surrounded by folks who you’d imagine also keep residency there. But money is money, the MPAA is the MPAA, and you can always count on Hollywood to Hollywood. So Spawn the movie would become the walking, talking, movie version of cognitive dissonance and unleash its Hellspawn upon the world packaged as a crowd-pleasing, special FX-driven, easily digestible PG-13 film for the masses. How did it turn out? That...

Exclusive: The widow of Michael Crichton – creator of ER, Jurassic Park, Westworld, Twister, The Andromeda Strain and many other hits that blended grounded science with propulsive pop culture narratives – filed a potentially explosive lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court this morning.
Led by Crichton’s widow Sherri Crichton on behalf of John Michael Crichton Trust’s Roadrunner Jmtc, the suit (read it here) names Warner Bros Television, John Wells, Noah Wyle, R. Scott Gemmill and others who are charged with breach of contract, breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and intentional interference with contractual relations. Repping Crichton is Hueston Hennigan Llp, which has demanded a jury trial. The lead attorney, Robert Klieger, repped Peter Jackson in the filmmaker’s suit against Warner Bros over profit participation, which was settled.

If you've watched Twisters (and you really should because it's a blast), then chances are you spotted Superman star David Corenswet. And he's playing...well, let's just say his character isn't exactly likeable!
The way he towers over his co-stars in that movie is a pretty good indication he'll make a fine Man of Steel - physically, at least - and we now have footage of the Twisters cast celebrating the news that Corenswet had joined the Dcu.
Filmed during production of the Twister sequel, it sees the likes of Glen Powell and Katy O'Brian absolutely losing their sh*t for the actor's good news and the whole thing is incredibly wholesome. That's nice to see given what Hollywood can be like for rising stars such as Corenswet.

As the summer begins to wind down, we got what might end up being the last big summer movie, although it also performed on the lower side of expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
20th Century released Fede Álvarez‘s “Alien: Romulus,” starring Cailee Spaeny, into 3,885 theaters on Friday, the first movie in the long-standing sci-fi horror franchise to be distributed by Disney. After receiving decent reviews with 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, the sci-fi horror film made $6.5 million in Thursday previews, just slightly less than the $7 million opening for “It Ends with Us” a week earlier. It then made $18 million on Friday, including those previews, which already pointed to the fact that the movie would probably open under $50 million.
Sure enough, it raked in an estimated $41.5 million, which is the second-best opening for the franchise after the $51 million weekend for 2012’s “Prometheus.” The “B+” that “Romulus” received on...

Glen Powell has defended 'Twisters' following a backlash over the exclusion of a kiss between the two main characters. The actor plays a storm chaser in the disaster movie - a standalone sequel to 1996 film 'Twister' - opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones and despite their characters getting close at the end of the film director Lee Isaac Chung decided not to include a scene of the pair sharing a smooch onscreen - and Glen is adamant it was the right move.He told Screenrant: "I really think that even that [backlash] shows that people care, which is really great. I just love how excited people have gotten about that movie, and Daisy and I send each other the TikToks and the gifs. "There’s so much funny stuff coming out of it. It’s fun. That’s what summer movies are about. It creates this conversation and cultural moment,...

Kiss or no kiss, Glen Powell is just happy fans care enough about Twisters to start discourse online.
In an interview with Screenrant, the actor, who stars opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones in the sequel to 1996’s Twister, recently shared his reaction to the surprising uproar over a kiss between the two leads being omitted from the film.
“I’m taking it very personally!” he said. “I’m sure you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes, where I did get to kiss Daisy Edgar-Jones, which really is all that counts. [Laughs] We had a great time, and I’m really proud of the movie.”
Throughout the movie, romantic tension builds between Powell’s Tyler, a hotshot storm chaser, and Edgar-Jones’ Kate, a retired tornado chaser, as they team up to take on a massive tornado. However, an onscreen kiss never made it into the final cut, and footage only later emerged on social media of...

The popular summer blockbuster film “Twisters” has ignited discussion among fans about a decision to cut a romantic scene between the two main characters. The movie, a sequel to the 1996 disaster film “Twister,” tells the story of storm chasers tracking intense weather patterns across the Midwest. Glen Powell stars as Tyler Owens, who teams up with atmospheric scientist Kate, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, to document powerful tornadoes.
In a recent interview, Powell addressed the backlash from viewers upset that a kissing scene between his character Tyler and Kate’s character was removed from the final cut of the film. The actor said he was surprised by the passionate response but understood fans wanted to see the on-screen chemistry between the two leads play out further. While some argue including the kiss was unnecessary and wouldn’t impact the plot, others believe it would have provided a satisfying conclusion to the...

If you feel it, chase it -- that little pearl of wisdom applies to obsessive storm-chasers and humble movie fans, alike. Despite its somewhat ham-fisted attempt to connect itself to a preexisting franchise (if the original 1996 movie can even be called that), "Twisters" felt like a breath of fresh air upon release this past July. In my review for /Film, I called it a "satisfying, crowd-pleasing effort [that] somehow rides the fine line between its IP obligations and a refreshingly self-contained experience" and I stand by every word. Sure, its impressive box-office performance was fueled by a number of factors (not least of all the Glen Powell Effect), but deep down I believe audiences responded to its throwback charms as the kind of Amblin-esque movie that we simply don't get enough of anymore.

This weekend’s biggest theatrical release was the novel-based romantic drama “It Ends with Us,” starring Blake Lively, taking on the seemingly unstoppable “Deadpool and Wolverine” juggernaut. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Lively’s movie did very well, better than some expected, “Deadpool and Wolverine” stayed on top for a third weekend in a row with $54.2 million, down just 44% to bring its domestic total to $494.3 million. Marvel Studios’ latest is just one or two days away from hitting the $500 million milestone, a benchmark achieved by a mere 21 movies — see the complete list.
The Ryan Reynolds–Hugh Jackman blockbuster grossed another $57.8 million internationally this weekend for an overseas total of $535.2 million, and sure enough, it crossed the $1 billion mark globally, remaining the second-biggest blockbuster of 2024. Another landmark of note is the $78 million the movie has made on global IMAX screens, divided at $41.3 million domestic and $36.7 million international.

In a world where intimate scenes have become a part and parcel of cinema that helps explain human connections, Glen Powell’s latest movie Twisters sparked controversies for yanking a kissing scene between the leads. Leaving audiences high and dry with simply tornado-chasing plots, the 2024 follow-up generated significant buzz for their bizarre decision.

Henry Cavill’s unilateral rise… and fall in the movie business has been documented extensively by the fans and critics alike. Despite his fervent popularity and global stardom, the A-list actor has hardly accrued a major blockbuster to his name that, despite doing well commercially, did not end up falling under the critics’ hellhole.
Apart from playing second fiddle to Tom Cruise and a teenager on Netflix, Cavill fell victim to a pop-culture phenomenon due to a wildly controversial and divisive trilogy that broke up a franchise, pushed a 100-year-old studio to the brink of bankruptcy, and catalyzed a restructuring and complete reboot of the said studio system.

Without a proper business plan to ease along his path toward an enduring career, Henry Cavill lies dormant in public memory, living off of his glory days and nurturing the possibility of a great future in cinema.

Sony is already ahead of the game without having invested hundreds of millions of dollars into its own streaming platform. This week, once again, results show this is no barrier to Sony’s success in reaching home viewers while generating strong revenues.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” premiered on VOD for a $19.99 rental last Tuesday, 47 days after its theatrical release. It remains in the box office top 10 at #7, with a $192 million domestic gross so far. Both iTunes (ranking by transaction) and Fandango (which calculates by revenue) rank it #1.
Meantime, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is the latest of Sony’s films to transition to initial streaming on Netflix about four months after release (and a strong VOD run). It took first place there immediately when it debuted last Tuesday, staying atop all week.
Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” (Warner Bros.) was displaced from the top spot on both charts.

Joss Whedon has had a dramatic career trajectory in Hollywood. But before his rise to fame after the huge reception of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he was just a normal writer trying to etch a place for himself in Tinsel Town. In the 80s, he started lending his scriptwriting skills to blockbusters such as Alien: Resurrection and Twister, to name a few.

But this rapid rise to popularity was also subject to a lot of criticism and followed a precipitous fall. However, long before he butchered the Justice League, Whedon found himself in a somewhat similar situation with Kevin Costner’s Waterworld (1995).

Kevin Costner‘s Waterworld had a unique history of its own. Released in 1995, the movie had a budget that soured to unprecedented heights. But despite the grandeur and hefty budget, it quickly...

The Children, Eleanor!
We’ve spent the month of July discussing the badass babes of Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror (listen), the queer undertones of Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (listen), and the “very bad weather” of Jan de Bont‘s 1996 tornado film, Twister (listen).
Now we’re wrapping up our de Bont double bill with his less successful 1999 special effects remake, The Haunting!
In the film, sheltered Eleanor (Lili Taylor) is recruited for a dubious insomnia study at the infamous Hill House by questionable doctor David Marrow (Liam Neeson). Along with bisexual Theo (Catherine Zeta-Taylor) and horny Luke (Owen Wilson), Nell is terrorized by annoying ghost children and the monstrous owner of the house, Hugh Crain (Charles Gunning).
As the spectral hauntings become more and more severe, Nell must uncover her tenuous connection to the previous victims before the terrible CGI swallows her and the other participants whole.
