The phrase "up 'n' under" (a catchphrase of real-life rugby commentator Eddie Waring) is a term used in rugby. An "up 'n' under" is a high kick angled so that the catcher, while looking skyward at the descending ball, receives at the same time as the ball, one or more chasing players travelling at speed, into his abdomen. The intention is to dislodge the ball, or even persuade the catcher to not bother making the catch.
The original stage play, also created by John Godber, was set in Kingston Upon Hull. The movie changes the setting to Upton, a small village in West Yorkshire where Godber was born.
