In a remarkable result, four Australian films – The Dry, Penguin Bloom, High Ground and Occupation: Rainfall – took home almost 50 per cent of the national box office last weekend.
The four titles together totaled $3.5 million, or 47 per cent of the total B.O of $7.5 million.
Such a strong local showing speaks to a variety of factors: the paucity of product from the US, good word-of-mouth and strong marketing campaigns by distributors.
The four titles’ performance is also a hopeful sign for the other Aussie films due in coming weeks, including documentary Wild Things (Potential Films), released this Thursday; dramas Long Story Short (Studiocanal) and Unsound (Filmink Presents) due on February 11; and Wayne Blair and Nel Minchin’s doco Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra (Icon) on February 18.
“With few Hollywood/international productions entering the market over the coming weeks, I expect this to continue for some time,” Village Cinemas national film programming manager Geoff Chard tells If.

It’s a rare feat for an Australian film to break through to the top of the box office, let alone for two local titles to lead the weekend’s rankings. But Penguin Bloom and The Dry have done just that.
Roadshow Films’ Penguin Bloom, directed by Glendyn Ivin and starring Naomi Watts, Andrew Lincoln and Jacki Weaver, opened on $1.5 million from 398 screens, or $1.7 million with previews, to come out on top.
Stablemate The Dry was close behind, netting $1.4 million over its fourth weekend to cross $12 million overall. Each film was produced by production company Made Up Stories, led by Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky and Jodi Matterson.
For Roadshow Films CEO Joel Pearlman, both titles’ results are testament to audiences’ desire to support home-grown filmmaking. He argues “now is the time for Australia to champion its bold stories and beautiful locations with the world.”

All streaming services go through a down period after the excitement of Spooky Season, it’s only natural. Thankfully with its list of new releases for November 2020, Hulu is making the best out of a barren pop culture landscape.
For starters, Hulu is premiering one of its major 2020 reboots this month as Animaniacs arrives on Nov. 20. Yakko, Wakko, Dot, and the rest of the Warner gang are set to return for this long-awaited revival of the animated classic. That’s about it as far as original series go but Hulu is also premiering original movies Greta, about climate activist Greta Thunberg on Nov. 13; and Run, a horror film starring Sarah Paulson, on Nov. 20.
Still, despite all the Animaniacs, Gretas, and Sarah Paulsons, the biggest hits this month might just be on the library content side of things. November 1 sees the arrival of some major TV properties. For starters, racy British...

What a difference a year makes.
When Denise Richards joined The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 9, she had a close bond with most of her co-stars.
But The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 10 was a different story, with Brandi Glanville popping up to say the Wild Things actress was having an affair with her.
Indeed, if you watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills online, you know the scandal has changed Denise's relationship with her co-stars.
While Garcelle Beauvais and Dorit Kemsley had her back all season long, Denise has had enough of putting her life out there for the cameras.
The news broke Wednesday night, via Variety, just as the second part of the Season 10 reunion was airing.
A representative for the star confirmed the news to the outlet, and it's not entirely surprising.

In an expected move, actress Denise Richard will be exiting Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills franchise, her representative has confirmed. She was on the show for two seasons.
While Rhobh has been a top-rated cable show on Wednesday nights, Richards has been embroiled in intra-cast battles, including a public fight with Brandi Glanville over an alleged hookup. Richards also had a showdown with cast member Lisa Rinna in the season finale over a cease-and-desist letter.
Richards is known for her roles as Carmen Ibanez in the film Starship Troopers, Kelly Van Ryan in Wild Things, and Bond girl Christmas Jones in the 1999 film The World Is Not Enough.
She also starred in the E! reality show Denise Richards: It’s Complicated. She published a memoir, The Real Girl Next Door, which made the New York Times best-seller list.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is saying goodbye to perhaps its shiniest diamond: Cast member Denise Richards is leaving the Bravo reality series after two seasons, our sister site Variety reports.
A representative for Richards confirmed to Variety that Richards will not return next season, following a season that saw her fighting with nearly all of her castmates after rumors spread of a sexual entanglement between Richards and former Rhobh star Brandi Glanville. (Richards has staunchly denied the rumors.) The current Season 10 of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on Bravo, with Part 2 of the (virtual) reunion airing this week.

The actress is exiting the hit Bravo show after just two seasons, her rep confirmed to Variety on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Prior to her departure a source told E! Richards' departure from Rhobh comes off the heels of season 10, which followed drama surrounding the Wild Things actress after Brandi Glanville told Kyle Richards and Teddi Mellencamp on camera that she had sex with Denise. In what is perhaps the most logical occurrence in the history of Bravo’s “Real Housewives” franchise, a representative for Denise Richards has confirmed that she will not be returning to “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” next season.
The drama around Richards during the show’s tenth season has fueled this season’s ratings — “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” has been the top-rated cable show on Wednesday nights this year — but the actor has clearly been miserable throughout. As this season went on, Richards had to fend off nearly the entire rest of the cast, as well as former “Rhobh” cast member Brandi Glanville, who claimed on camera she’d had a one-night-stand with the married Richards.
The drama has divided the “Housewives” fandom into contentious groups, with many viewers being #TeamDenise, others being #TeamBrandi and a third subset of the audience who think Glanville may be telling the truth,...

It's the tension that we've been waiting for.
After months of teases, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 10 Episode 1 finally aired Thursday night (full review Here), and one person who watched was former housewive, Brandi Glanville.
Yes, the same Brandi Glanville who's allegations that she and Denise Richards had an affair led to Denise rage quitting during production of the current season.
Brandi took issue with one scene, in particular, from the premiere. It involved Denise complaining to her waiter about not giving her the correct tequila order.
“I’m sorry but their [Sic] is a way to say to your waiter (I’ve waited a lot of tables) that you think your drink might be wrong without being a complete bitch!!!” Brandi, 47, tweeted.
“I judge people by the way they treat others.”
In a second tweet, Brandi wrote, “She was rude to a waiter — at least her glam was on point.

Screen Australia has decided to postpone the introduction of the revised documentary programs from July 1 until 2021, to the dismay of some factual filmmakers who wanted the new regime to happen sooner.
Announcing the move, Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason said: “Documentary has a unique set of challenges in this current situation and many creators in this space were already operating in difficult circumstances. As such, my focus right now is on giving the documentary sector as much stability as possible.”
The existing documentary programs including the Producer Equity Program (Pep) will remain in place for the rest of 2020. The budget for documentary in 2019/20 remains unchanged and Mason said the documentary team headed by Bernadine Lim is now working on a very large number of new applications.

With theaters in an unprecedented nationwide shutdown, we look back at the game-changing titles in play on this weekend in box-office history.
Under normal circumstances, this weekend would likely have been the best of 2020 to date. With “Mulan” (Disney) set to open and “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount) in its second week, grosses totaling $200 million were likely.

And in 1998, this was the weekend after the Oscars — a date then known as something of a box-office dead zone. Streaming didn’t exist, and theater windows were longer than 90 days, which meant new films stayed away because they didn’t want to compete with the post-Oscar bump. Today, Oscar movies are no threat since most winners are on some form of VOD, or in wider release.

Sips tea... Drama is brewing on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and season 10 hasn't even premiered yet! While the reality TV series is set to air later this year, it seems two key players are already making headlines: Denise Richards and Brandi Glanville. Rumors are swirling online that the Wild Things alum had an alleged months-long affair with the former Bravolebrity. Apparently, the rumored romance between the two reality TV personalities took place while Denise was already married to Aaron Phypers, whom she wed in 2018 (and which was filmed during the series). "All the drama around these accusations has been filmed," a source told E! News. "Brandi has text messages and other...

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Tammy And The T-rex – The ‘Gore Cut’ screens Friday, November 22nd at Webster University’s Moor Auditorium(470 E Lockwood Ave) at 9:00pm. A Facebook invite for the film can be found Here
A cinematic whatsit on the order of Miami Connection or Dangerous Men, but this time replete with recognizable stars, Tammy & the T-Rex was initially released as a PG-13 teen film circa 1994, but earlier this year resurfaced in a “gore cut,” which reinstates a few bloody scenes excised to achieve that PG-13 rating. The plot concerns a mad doctor who implants the brain of murdered teen Michael (played by Paul Walker of The Fast & the Furious fame) into a mechanical tyrannosaurus rex, and, once in t-rex form, Michael reunites with his sweetheart (Denise Richards of Starship Troopers and Wild Things) and takes revenge on his tormentors. Imagine a cross between Saved by the Bell, King Kong, and The Re-Animator,...

Denise Richards‘ life may be in the public eye, but that doesn’t mean she’ll allow her children to watch everything from her past.

Richards shares Sami, 15, and Lola, 13, with ex-husband Charlie Sheen. She is also mom to 7-year-old Eloise, whom she adopted as a single mom in 2011.

Denise Richards will star in sci-fi action film “Timecrafters.”
“Timecrafters: The Treasure of Pirate’s Cove” is the first movie in a planned franchise about time-traveling seamen who try to retrieve a treasure map from kids in a local town called Pirate’s Cove. The travelers, who originally lost the map, have to adapt to new technology and modern ways of life as they have fast-forwarded through time some 300 years after lightning struck their ship and forced them through a portal into a modern generation.
Richards will play a single mom named Victoria Dare who struggles with the loss of her husband and copes by gravitating toward a slew of unsuitable partners in search of the best one to help raise her son. Malcolm McDowell (“A Clockwork Orange”) will star alongside Richards, playing Captain Lynch, a villain who leads the pirates looking for the elusive treasure map, and Eric Balfour...

“American Idol” kicked off Hollywood Week on Sunday, March 24 with the first of two episodes dedicated to this phase of the competition. By the end of the episode on Monday (March 25), we will have seen the 150 hopefuls who got tickets to Hollywood get cut down to just 40 contenders who remain in the running to win season 17. These two Hollywood Week episodes were filmed months ago and we’ve been doing some digging about the results. Spoilers ahead
We know that the contestants faced the three judges — pop princess Katy Perry, country superstar Luke Bryan and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter Lionel Richie — in three separate rounds: lines of 10, groups, and solos. At the end of these, they got the news as to whether they had made the Top 40, who were sent to the Aulani Resort in Hawaii to sing again for the trio of experts at the end of January. The episode...

With March in full swing, we have another big batch of horror headed home this week that genre fans should keep an eye out for, including one of my most anticipated releases of the month: Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition of The Craft (so excited to call the corners with this new Blu-ray!). Beyond that, we have even more great titles to get excited about, including the criminally underseen Kolobos from Arrow Video, Man’s Best Friend, featuring one of my favorites—Ally Sheedy—and Nicolas Pesce’s Piercing, which features some brilliant performances from the likes of Mia Wasikowska and Christopher Abbott.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for March 12th include Garden Party Massacre, She Wolf, The Greasy Strangler: Special Director’s Edition, Lifechanger, Silk Scream, and The Wild Pussycat.

At first, Pen15 plays like a sketch comedy idea ill-advisedly stretched out to sitcom length. Co-created (along with Sam Zvibleman) by stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle — you might vaguely recognize them from… that thing, or… that other thing — the new Hulu comedy features the 31-year-old actresses playing themselves at age 13 in the year 2000, interacting with a cast largely made up of actual middle schoolers. Significant effort has been made to approximate what they looked like at that age (photographic evidence of which appears in the show’s opening credits,...

Shot by straight male directors, lesbian sex scenes are all too often pornographic fantasy. But now film-makers are portraying a more realistic experience
Google “sexiest movie lesbian scenes” and you will find a lot of tawdry thrillers. Cruel Intentions, Wild Things, Basic Instinct … hot stuff, maybe, but not the most realistic or responsible depiction of what women actually do in bed together. The visual focus is usually on the women’s bodies, rather than the pleasure they are getting from each other. Even arthouse hits such as Blue is the Warmest Colour have divided audiences: many gay women complained that the seven-minute scene in the film was unrealistic, directed by a man according to his own fantasies – something the lead actors backed up.

Do you like scary movies? Well, Neve Campbell probably does, seeing how she starred in all four Scream films, but even she apparently has her limits. Though the game-changing slasher series certainly helped raise Campbell’s profile, the actress also know for Wild Things and The Craft found herself swamped with further offers for horror movie roles and found it to be all a bit much.
When Campbell appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote the new Dwayne Johnson actioner Skyscraper recently, she had an opportunity to explain her disappearance from Hollywood for several years in the wake of the first few Scream films. Apparently, it was to do with all the success she found at such a young age.
“I needed a minute. In my 20s, it all hit so fast and so big that it was a little overwhelming. Wonderful, obviously, and I’m very grateful for it,...

(Welcome to Dtv Descent, a series that explores the weird and wild world of direct-to-video sequels to theatrically released movies. In this edition, I’ve been forced to accept the existence of three – three! – sequels to one of 1998’s best comedies.) You read that headline right. 1998’s Wild Things is a comedy, and it’s a pretty brilliant […]
