Since 2020, we have worked with Cartoons Underground to interview their up-and-coming student animators. Some returned to the festival to show their later work, such as Olivia Griselda and Sarah Cheok; others have begun to make waves abroad, such as Calleen Koh; and still others are hard at work on their own life trajectories.
This year, we spoke to the directors Jaime Ng Shu Yi (“Neh Neh Pok”), Wang Xiruo and Emily Tan (“The Seamstress’ Secret”), and Ning Xuan Tan (“I Think I’m Going to Die”). The three animations are wildly different in style, displaying a fine flight of Singapore’s up-and-coming animators. “Neh Neh Pok” is a 2D-animated memoir on a young girl’s journey towards accepting her flat chest.”The Seamstress’ Secret”, on the other hand, introduces repressed seamstress’ crush on her client, a singer, beyond the hazy crimson curtains of 1940s Shanghai. Stephen King is one of the most celebrated and iconic horror writers of all time, but he's also a storyteller whose work has been adapted into dozens of movies and TV shows with, shall we say, mixed results. While some of the very best films of all time are based on King's work like "The Shining" and "The Shawshank Redemption," there are plenty of utter trash movies that have a "based on the novel by Stephen King" credit. Still, even if they may be a toss coin in terms of quality a lot of the time, any new Stephen King adaptation is at least worth paying attention to.

2024 has been very kind to Tim Burton. After years of commercial or critical flops, Burton's comeback started in 2022 with "Wednesday" season 1 and peaked with the recently-released "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" — a movie that was not just a success, but also became one of Burton's biggest hits ever. Now, a beloved Tim Burton animated movie is climbing the streaming charts.
Halloween is upon us, and that means the Top 10 charts for streaming services across the United States are filled with spooky titles for all kinds of audiences (as well as a handful of miscellaneous titles that managed to climb the ranks). On Max, for example, Burton's 2005 stop-motion animated film "Corpse Bride" is currently sitting comfortably at the number four spot, sandwiched between M. Night Shyamalan's new film "Trap," the latest adaptation of "Salem's Lot," and two chapters in Ti West's "X" trilogy (via FlixPatrol).

M. Night Shyamalan has had one of the most fascinating careers in Hollywood history. Since falling from grace in the late 2000s, he's gone back to smaller budgets and more contained movies, in the process delivering one banger after another. From the critical and financial success of "Split," to the absolutely wild concept of "Old," Shyamalan has been on a roll in recent years. His latest film, "Trap," is a messy tale of two movies, as /Film's own Jeremy Mathai wrote in his review. One half is a nail-biting, tense thriller about a serial killer trapped at a concert with some rather catchy songs. The other is an increasingly silly, yet still thrilling cat-and-mouse game that changes the protagonist from Josh Hartnett's killer to Saleka Shyamalan's world-famous pop star, Lady Raven.

“Salem’s Lot” (Max) Salem’s Lot (2024)
Welcome (back) to “’Salem’s Lot.” While this new adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 novel was originally meant for theatrical exhibition, it finally debuted this month on Max. In this latest iteration, Lewis Pullman stars as Ben Mears, the Soul/Lowe character, a novelist who returns to his sleepy (and potentially doomed) home town of Jerusalem’s Lot to work on a new novel and finds that this hamlet has been taken over by filthy vampires. Tim Burton isn’t looking to go down any dark holes on the World Wide Web anytime soon.
Ahead of the opening of his new The World of Tim Burton exhibition in London, the legendary filmmaker revealed to BBC News that “anybody who knows me knows I’m a bit of a technophobe.”
“If I look at the Internet, I found that I got quite depressed. It scared me because I started to go down a dark hole. So I try to avoid it because it doesn’t make me feel good,” Burton explained. “I get depressed very quickly, maybe more quickly than other people. But it doesn’t take me much to start to click and start to short circuit.”

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ producer Tommy Harper has teased "the door is open" for another sequel with director Tim Burton. The 66-year-old filmmaker returned to the franchise 36 years after the 1988 original with the new comedy-fantasy flick and the film's producer has revealed it's possible there could be more entries in the series with the 'Corpse Bride' director at the helm.Speaking to Deadline, Harper said: "I think with Tim's love for the title and the characters, the door is open, but we'll see what happens next."However, Burton had previously dismissed ideas of another sequel after ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’.Speaking on a panel at the Venice Film Festival recently, he said: "Let’s do the math. It took 35 years to do this one."For another, I’d be over 100 [years old]. It could be possible thanks to medical science. But I don’t think so."The film sees Michael Keaton, 72, reprise his role as the titular ghost,...

Tim Burton is known for making odd movies but the central plot of Batman is on another level. The movie has the last type of plot you would expect from a film about the Caped Crusader. What’s even more unusual is that nobody seems to talk about this artistic choice.
Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’ is a twisted love triangle
We expect superhero stories to revolve around clashes of personality and attempts to save the world. Burton’s Batman is, in essence, a love triangle. Bruce Wayne loves a reporter named Vicki Vale who becomes the object of the Joker’s affections. Vicki is apparently fine with guys who wear bat costumes but not guys in clown costumes, so she goes for the Caped Crusader. Of course, the Joker has a habit of taking everything too far, so the film’s climax revolves around him kidnapping Vicki and Batman trying to save her.

When you watch a movie called Batman, you’d expect the Caped Crusader to take center stage. Tim Burton’s Batman took things in a different direction. It might not have been the best idea, but it was certainly an entertaining idea.
Why Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’ is swallowed whole by the Joker
If Burton loves one thing, it’s monsters. Sometimes, his main characters are monsters, sometimes, monsters take a side role, and sometimes, he takes the conventional route and has his monsters be villains. Regardless, Burton’s monsters steal the show.
The monster in Burton’s Batman is, of course, Jack Nicholson’s Joker. The movie alludes to The Phantom of the Opera multiple times as if to say that the Joker is a Universal Studios creature for the 1980s. Nicholson steals the show — perhaps a little too much.

Beetlejuice is one of Tim Burton’s most beloved movies. However, Burton made a mistake or two with the original film that could have been corrected in the sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Instead, he doubled down on some material that was problematic in the first place. Here’s a look at what was going through the Batman director’s head when he returned to the afterlife for one more go-around.
‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ takes a Looney Tunes influence too far
The original film has aged well in a lot of ways. The current revival of the Goth subculture shines a favorable light on it, as well as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and Corpse Bride. All of the performances in Beetlejuice are pitch-perfect. In addition, a lot of the jokes in the film are just as funny as they were in 1988. But not all of them work that well. For example,...

“It’s showtime!”…well more like HBO and Max eventually after this brand spankin’ (careful) new sequel to a much-beloved iconic 1980s cinema classic enjoys a healthy stint at the ole’ multiplex. Yup, it’s now been 36 years since that original comedy/fantasy firmly announced the quirky storytelling style of a former animator (though he’d keep a hand in the medium) after hinting at what to come with that “big adventure” with a much-missed movie hero. But can he, along with a new movie generation and fans of the “first”, really “go home” again (and the “great beyond”)? Now all it’ll take is a theatre ticket, along with proclaiming the main character’s name three times, though to be safe the formal title only repeats it twice with Beetljuice Beetlejuice. Of the many honors and recognitions he’s received over his more than 40-year career, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is not one that Tim Burton ever expected. But his reaction to the news perfectly matches the playful, macabre sensibility that has driven his 20 films to almost $4.5 billion in worldwide box office receipts and made a household name out of a filmmaker who has constantly been perceived as an outsider.
“I remember, I first thought they were gravestones before I knew what they were,” Burton tells Variety. “I grew up in California where it’s all flat tombstones, so that’s why I mistook it for those. But I realized fairly early on that Desi Arnaz and John Wayne were not buried underneath [Hollywood Boulevard].”
With films like “Sleepy Hollow,” “Corpse Bride,” Dark Shadows” and “Frankenweenie” under his belt, the director knows a thing or two about the living and the dead.

Without Tim Burton’s groundbreaking Batman movies, there might be no Marvel Cinematic Universe or DC Extended Universe. Burton’s dark, gothic aesthetic and Michael Keaton’s iconic portrayal of the Dark Knight redefined superhero storytelling, setting the stage for the complex, character-driven narratives that have captivated audiences for decades.

In his 40-year career, Tim Burton has carved out a niche for himself making quirky, eccentric films that are often box office bonanzas. Let’s take a look back at all 19 of his films, ranked from worst to best, in our photo gallery.
Burton began his career as an animator for Walt Disney Studios before making the short films “Vincent” (1982) and “Frankenweenie” (1984). He directed his first feature when he was just 26 years old: “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” (1985). Burton followed that success with the macabre comedy “Beetlejuice” (1988) before entering the world of blockbusters with the dark, ominous superhero adventure “Batman” (1989).
From the beginning, Burton displayed a talent for crafting visually stunning worlds unlike any seen before. Four of his films, in fact — “Batman,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “Alice in Wonderland” — have won Oscars for their art direction.
Burton often returned to his animation roots, first as a producer on “The Nightmare Before Christmas...

Did you know that "Beetlejuice" is rated PG? One can only fathom what demonic force Tim Burton struck a bargain with to secure that rating for his beloved 1988 horror-comedy. In case you had forgotten, this is a movie in which Michael Keaton's Ghost With the Most drops one of the all-time greatest f-bombs before honking his d**k, gleefully mimes jerking off, and loiters around a supernatural strip club titled "Dante's Inferno Room." Meanwhile, Geena Davis rips her own face off and holds Alec Baldwin's bloodied, decapitated head at one point. This was also a few years out from the "stealth horror" of "Gremlins" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" leading to the creation of the PG-13, which makes it that much more impressive just how many gnarly creatures and naughty moments Burton was able to sneak by the infamously uptight, conservative ratings board.

Johnny Depp is continuing to plot his comeback to mainstream Hollywood following his defamation battle with Amber Heard. He returned to the big screen in the French-language period drama ‘Jeanne Du Barry,’ where he played King Louis Xv, produced and directed by Maïwen, who also starred in the movie as King Louis Xv’s lover.

Johnny Depp continues to explore a path to a comeback since his 2022 defamation suit victory against ex-wife Amber Heard. Next up: playing a gibberish-speaking puffin.
No, it’s not a return to Pirates of the Caribbean, the franchise that made him one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. Nor does another spin in Captain Jack Sparrow’s hat look to be in the cards — despite producer Jerry Bruckheimer voicing a desire to reboot the series.
Depp, 61, did headline a 2023 feature — the period drama Jeanne du Barry, in which he played Louis Xv. It premiered at Cannes that year and was met with middling reviews.
Next, Depp returns to feature animation, a format that served him well in films like 2005’s Corpse Bride and 2011’s Rango. In Johnny Puff: Secret Mission, Depp plays a fedora-wearing puffin living in a town in the arctic who goes to battle with the evil Otto von Walrus.

Come se dice “Beetlejuice” in Italiano?
The first of the major fall festivals has announced its opening night film, and, perhaps a bit surprising, the Venice International Film Festival will kick off with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Tim Burton’s “next generation” sequel to his 1988 classic.
The out-of-competition screening will serve as the movie’s world premiere.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” brings back Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Michael Keaton as the titular undead prankster, two-time Oscar nominee Winona Ryder as the gloomy gal who summons him into our realm, and Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara as her artsy mother upset about moving to the sticks. Jenna Ortega, a Burton-world alum after the hit series “Wednesday,” is new to the franchise as Ryder’s daughter, plus Justin Theroux (playing Ryder’s husband), Willem Dafoe, Monica Belluci, and Burn Gorman. Not returning are Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis’s characters or Jeffrey Jones as Ryder’s dad,...

Updated: The 81st Venice Film Festival will open with the world premiere of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci, with Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe.
The Warner Bros sequel will be screened out of competition on Wednesday, August 28 at the Sala Grande, the festival said Tuesday. This will mark a return to the sort of glitzy red carpet with which Venice has become synonymous, after last year’s Lido event had less star-wattage than usual as it took place amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. Warner Bros starts international rollout on Beetlejuice 2 on September 4 with domestic joining September 6.

In an interview, the author openly admitted he loved two Hollywood directors but lost interest in another one. So why are these fated/ill-fated directors? You would be surprised by their popularity.

Johnny Depp is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most transformative actors who is not afraid to experiment with his roles. The actor has played some of the wildest, unique, and wacky characters that audiences loved, cementing his status as a bankable movie star. His collaborations with director Tim Burton have resulted in some of the finest works of his career.

One of Depp’s best films is his first collaboration with Burton in 1990’s Edward Scissorhands. The film and Depp’s titular role made him a household name. Depp, being from the TV world, never thought he would get the part and almost didn’t go for a meeting with Burton.

Despite his imposter syndrome, Johnny Depp beat out some of the biggest names in film (and music) for his breakout role.
The Academy Award nominee revealed he beat out the likes of Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and even Michael Jackson for his eponymous role in Tim Burton’s 1990 gothic fantasy Edward Scissorhands.
He told director Tara Wood that Cruise “was not far away from actually playing Edward Scissorhands — true story” as he reflected on the film for an untitled docuseries about Burton, according to People.
Depp ultimately landed the role of the loving outcast, who was created by a scientist (Vincent Price) with scissors in place of his hands. When his creator dies, a local woman (Dianne Wiest) takes Edward into her suburban home, where he falls in love with her daughter (Winona Ryder) and faces ostracism from the townspeople.

Stating that Tim Burton loves B-movie horror is a little like saying the grass is green and the sky is blue. The director has spent his entire career paying homage to classic Hammer horror pictures and low-budget genre fare, from his blood-drenched, practically black-and-white "Sleepy Hollow" and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" adaptations to his gleefully bizarre alien invasion flick "Mars Attacks!" and his biopic about the grandaddy of cult camp cinema, "Ed Wood."
