Although it was intended to be the first talking film released in Australia, extraordinary problems in production (linked mainly to the new sound technology) meant it took eighteen months to make and missed the chance. The movie was thought to be lost until the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia announced its rediscovery in May 1987.
