The show was based on the Japanese anime series Sei jûshi Bisumaruku (1984) (Star Musketeer Bismarck) that was produced by Studio Pierrot, which achieved moderate success in Japan. After World Events Productions secured the distribution rights for the anime, the episodes were heavily altered to appeal the Western market. With a combination of complex editing, rewritten stories and revised character backgrounds, "Bismarck" was changed from a mature anime into a lighter show much in the vein of BraveStarr (1987). Additionally, six new episodes were produced by World Events Productions, as a way to extend and explain their vision of the world of Saber Rider.
In the English dub, Peter Cullen is doing an impersonation of John Wayne.
