Helicon Arts Cooperative, a cinematic arts foundation and production company dedicated to innovative storytelling, is pleased to announce ‘Star Trek: Picard’ actress Olivia Youngers has been cast in the mystery thriller ‘Contre-Coup’ feature film, due to begin filming in 2025. Youngers will star with actresses Rekha Sharma (Battlestar Galactica, Transplant, Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Nicola Bryant (Doctor Who). Actor Rico E. Anderson (Truth Be Told, Swat) is also attached.

Written by James Kerwin (Yesterday Was a Lie), who will also direct, ‘Contre-Coup’ tells the story of a brilliant but troubled particle theorist desperately searching for answers as to why the only life he knows — and the only woman he’s ever loved — are disappearing before his eyes.

“I’d been kicking around the idea for a spiritual successor to my last feature,‘ Yesterday Was a Lie, ’for a few years. ‘Contre-Coup’ is a sci-fi-leaning film that deals with some weighty and timely social issues.

Deadpool's meta abilities are surpassed by Cameo in X-Factor #1, with the new hero's shape-shifting power. X-Factor team, sponsored by the government, faces public skepticism as mutants return to society. Controversial EC Comics, which warped young minds with tales of horror and suspense and spawned spinoffs in film and TV, has returned with original stories in a new anthology series.

Oni Press has licensed the EC Comics banner and last month released its first issue, Epitaphs From the Abyss. The second, Cruel Universe, arrives this month with a focus on science fiction stories.

The EC Comics brand has a fabled history.

EC Comics stopped publishing all but its humor magazine, Mad, in 1956 because of government censorship pressures and accusations of fomenting juvenile delinquency. As a result, the Comics Code Authority was created to regulate the industry.

The new series is a partnership between Oni Press and the family of William M. Gaines, the original publisher of EC Comics, who died in1992.

Sharon Osbourne exited Celebrity Big Brother after spending eight days in the most famous house in the UK.

Osbourne was a “lodger” and wasn’t an official housemate, having agreed to appear in the reality competition for only one week. The former The Talk co-host was not evicted from the house and didn’t face the public vote.

“It’s been a great party. I have loved it,” Osbourne said after Big Brother announced her time had ended.

Big Brother asked Osbourne to name the housemates who impacted her most, saying it was Nikita Kuzmin.

“He’s beautiful inside and outside,” Osbourne said about the Strictly Come Dancing dancer.

Exclusive: Star Trek icon Jonathan Frakes is to direct a 10-part series based on novel and audio book Deathlands.

The series comes from NextCypher, the indie that crypto pioneer Jeff Garzik launched last year, and is set to begin shooting in Sofia, Bulgaria, this spring. When we first told about the show in August 2022, Garzik described it as “Mad Max: Fury Road meets Yellowjackets in an epic post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure.”

Mark A. Altman as the showrunner and executive producer. Thomas P. Vitale and Garzik are also executive producers. Christine Sheaks is handling global casting efforts.

The writers strike caused a lot of films and TV shows to shut down production a couple months ago – and a lot more that were able to continue filming without writers have since been shut down by the Screen Actors Guild strike. But if a production happens to be independent, it can receive a waiver that will allow it to continue filming and its actors will continue working, even if they’re SAG members. Deadline and Variety report that some of the projects that have received SAG waivers include the Sam Raimi-produced horror film Don’t Move, the Mel Gibson / Mark Wahlberg thriller Flight Risk, the thriller The Watchers, and Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller’s Dust Bunny, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver.

Hollywood’s historic double strike has shut down the vast majority of productions across the country but not all of them.

On Tuesday, SAG-AFTRA approved certain productions that aren’t affiliated with any of the struck studios or streamers to keep filming. The list includes David Lowery’s Mother Mary and Rebel Wilson comedy Bride Hard.

Independent productions not affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers members can apply for waivers from SAG-AFTRA to continue production, the union stated. The waivers mostly apply to independent projects, though Biblical project The Chosen was granted one to finish filming its fourth season even though Lionsgate has distribution rights. Members can work on these shoots without being in violation of the strike order.

To be granted a waiver, a production must sign an interim agreement that “would largely be conformed to the AMPTP agreement on a going-forward basis once the membership ratifies successor agreements,...

Guild publishes list less than one week into strike.

SAG-AFTRA on Tuesday published its first list of independent films which have signed an interim agreement allowing production to resume and it includes several titles from A24 and Lionsgate.

Among the 39-strong roster is A24’s Mother Mary, which sees David Lowery direct Anne Hathaway and Hunter Schafer in the tale of the relationship between a fictional musician and a fashion designer.

A24 also has the Paul Rudd and Jenny Ortega project Death Of A Unicorn scheduled to shoot in Hungary.

The fourth season of Angel Studios’ independent Christian series “The Chosen” was among the list of 39 productions approved by SAG-AFTRA to continue filming during its ongoing actors strike.

Projects that are not being produced by a Hollywood studio that is a member of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers may apply to sign an interim agreement that would allow production to continue and for SAG-AFTRA members to perform without being in violation of the strike order. More productions are expected to be approved in the coming weeks.

While past seasons have been licensed out to streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix, “The Chosen” gets its budget entirely from crowdfunding, as millions have contributed to the production starring Jonathan Roumie as Jesus of Nazareth. Alexandra Burke, singer, song-writer and British X-Factor winner, has signed on to play the villainess in this year’s London Palladium pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk.

Burke joins already announced stars Dawn French, Julian Clary, Paul Zerdin, Nigel Havers and Gary Wilmot. The panto runs at the Palladium from December 10 through January 15.

The Brits love their pantos at Christmas. Michael Harrison, who heads Crossroads Pantomimes, has turned the Palladium panto into a must-see event with spectacular sets and costumes, plenty of song and dance coupled with over-the-top jokes.

Last season Burke played Scheherazade — the Spirit of the Ring in Aladdin at the Opera House, Manchester.

”This year I’ve got Dawn as Jack’s mum and Alexandra as Mrs. Blunderbore, the giant’s wife. She’s the villainess and she’ll be terrorizing Dawn,” Harrison told Deadline.

Harrison revealed that Burke sees Mrs. Blunderbore as having “a Cruella flavour about her.

Big-budget non-fiction series from Will Smith, Darren Aronofsky, Jon Favreau, James Cameron and David Blaine make up Nat Geo’s latest slate for Disney+.

The factual giant has ordered 12 new series as part of its latest streaming lineup.

Following Welcome To Earth and One Strange Rock, Smith is returning to Nat Geo with Pole to Pole, a series that will see the King Richard star cover 26,000 miles from the South Pole to the North Pole. It comes from Smith’s Westbrook Studios, Jane Root’s Nutopia and Aronofsky’s Protoza.

The company has set eight new natural history series: Great Migrations, Home, Lion, Secrets Of The Elephants, Secrets Of The Octopus, Sentient, Super/Natural and The Biggest Little Farm Series.

Underscoring the robustness of a fast evolving Latin American TV market, U.K. production-distribution giant Fremantle and the Larraín brothers’ Fabula have in development a third season of gender abuse thriller “La Jauría” and second season of “Señorita 89.”

The moves comes as Fremantle is firing up both its premium scripted series and entertainment format business in Latin America, which is fast emerging as a key growth market for platforms and heavyweight independent production-distribution companies such as Fremantle.

Total Fremantle revenues from Latin America increased by 25% from 2019 to 2021 with production revenues in the region rising by nearly a third in the same period, said Jens Richter, Fremantle CEO, international.

Both series come from Lucía Puenzo, fast consolidating as one of the foremost showrunners in high-end Latin America drama. “La Jauría” season two was co-produced by Amazon which took rights to Latin America and Spain. It was sold to HBO Max for the U.

Mexico City-based Endemol Shine Boomdog (Esb), the Spanish-language division of Banijay Americas, has tapped veteran Latin American TV producer-executive Frank Scheuermann for the position of senior VP and head of unscripted.

Scheuermann was most recently head of Mexico for Alibi Films where he oversaw production and served as co-executive producer on hit local adaptations of reality series. These included “Bake Off Mexico” for HBO Max, “Inseparables” (“Power Couple”) for Televisa and “Quien es la Mascara?” (“The Masked Singer”) for Canal Rcn, Colombia.

Prior to that, he built solid experience in unscripted production as head of non-scripted formats for Televisa (Mexico) and Teleset/Sony (Colombia). He was also head of development and production in Latin America for Keshet International.

X-Factor debuted in 1986 from the creative team of Bob Layton and Jackson Guice as a way for Marvel to profit from fan nostalgia to reunite the original X-Men once again.

That team had one purpose: to find scared mutants and saved them from humans who wanted to hurt them. That changed over the years, with Havok's team becoming a new government mutant task force and then becoming a group that helped investigate deaths and other mutant crimes in Krakoa.

Nicole Scherzinger has joined the cast of NBC’s upcoming Annie Live! musical event, the network announced. She’ll play the role of Grace Farrell, assistant of Daddy Warbucks and champion of the little red-haired orphan.

“Musical theater has always made my heart soar, so I’m over the moon to join this amazing cast for such a great classic,” Scherzinger said.

Casting for the title character has not been announced, but the musical – set for Thursday, Dec. 2 – will feature Taraji P. Henson as Miss Hannigan and Harry Connick Jr. as Daddy Warbucks.

Chick Vennera, a voice actor in numerous Warner Bros. animated projects like “Animaniacs” and “Batman: the Animated Series,” and actor in “Thank God It’s Friday” and “The Golden Girls,” died Wednesday in Burbank, Calif. He was 74.
