Very good drama
An absorbing drama adapted from Catherine Cookson novel is about a rebellious teenage daughter (Emilia Fox) of a successful businessman and his devoted wife, whose disenchantment with her privileged upbringing ultimately provokes a scandal in their small town.
An excellent cast, a sharp script and finely-etched characters make this very enjoyable. It's a story about power, class, honour and scandal in the 1950's.

"Dont Shout"!
In honesty I cant tell you why, but theres lots and lots of shouting in this one - mainly the Ben Miles Character. A 17 year old gets pregnant after a 1 night stand with her uncle. She keeps quiet who "father is" for quite a time, but is married to Ben Miles. He then spends the rest of the film shouting at lots of folks in his own house, which for me I didnt enjoy. The toffs (mill owner and wife) are portrayed as vile and inhumane, they are far superior to anyone else on planet earth despite (as likely as not) being Church goers. I found this quite hard going and there are better ones in drama form than this was. Equally, the levels of "blasphemy" are quite high in this - if you like that then it will probably be more enjoyable for you!

Splendid adaptation of the Catherine Cookson novel!
This is a splendid adaptation of Catherine Cookson's 1950s-era novel.
It centers around rich, strong-willed Vanessa Ratcliffe (Emilia Fox) and poor, ambitious Angus Cotton (Ben Miles). Vanessa and Angus are good friends despite her snobbish parents' objections. When Vanessa becomes pregnant, Angus is wrongfully accused and Vanessa's life begins to fall apart. Angus comes to her rescue but the events that bring them together also threaten to tear them apart. It is a wonderful, heartwarming story of love, revenge, ambition and the determination to succeed against the odds. A must see!!

Beautiful!!
This series was not easy to find . I found it on dailymotion in three parts . However the search was worth it . It was a beautiful watch. What I loved about it is, it wasn't too fairytale like. Not everything is happily ever, they will be trials etc. Most importantly though in the end the couple chose to focus on themselves and stopped seeking validation from the bitter parents of the wife .l recommend this one . It's real nice
