Polly Adams played Jane Bennet in the series. Her daughter Susannah Harker later played the same character in Pride and Prejudice (1995), another BBC adaptation.
Lucy Fleming, playing Lydia, wore the same costumes worn by her mother Celia Johnson, who played Elizabeth in a 1936 stage production.
Only four of the five Bennet sisters are in this adaptation. The 'serious' sister, Mary, does not appear.
In the screenplay for this adaptation, screenwriter Nemone Lethbridge suggested Wilton House, home of the Earl of Pembroke, for the exterior of Rosings Park, and Chawton Cottage, the home Jane Austen shared during her later years with her mother and sister, for the exterior of Longbourn.
Produced to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen, it was the first colour adaptation.
