Emile Couzinet's works are so abysmal it's a guilty pleasure to watch them. They represent French cinema in its most basic form, pathetic in the extreme. To write it's not to be taken literally is to state the obvious.
"Mon Curé" is a character, who ,like Don Camillo, is featured in several movies from the thirties ,the fifties and even the naughties -there was a "Mon Curé Chez Les Bidasses" (=My vicar visits the privates) in 2007).
"Mon Curé " (my vicar) is a shy priest ,whose goal is to help the poor .As one of the privates , an aristocrat ,went over the wall, the vicar is asked to replace him in the barracks : as this naughty soldier is to fight in a boxing match, after a cock and bull story of warrant officers, corporals (corporal Tiroir (=drawer) is played by Jean Carmet),military slang (which the vicar learns by singing with his mates!),umbrellas and toothaches ,the vicar winds up on a ring .
How a weak priest ,armed up with love ,a hat ,an umbrella and a breviary became the regiment's champ! A guilty pleasure!Indeed!
