Amazon MGM Studios and producer Scott Stuber have teamed up to acquire the film adaptation rights to an adult mystery thriller novel proposal by bestselling author Lauren Oliver, and Deadline reports that Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson has boarded the project with the intention of producing it alongside Stuber… and, if she likes the script, she’ll also sign on to play the title character of The Girl in the Lake.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the story has been described as being along the lines of “What Lies Beneath meets The Sixth Sense.” So it sounds like there might be something supernatural going on with the girl in the lake.
Oliver is currently writing the screenplay. Johansson and Jonathan Lia will be producing the film through Johansson’s company These Pictures, while Marc Resteghini produces through Jack Tar Pictures. In addition to Scott Stuber, another producer...

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber have acquired The Girl in the Lake, a proposal for an adult mystery thriller novel by New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver. Oliver will write the script for a film that will be developed for United Artists. Scarlett Johansson is eyeing this to star as the title character, subject to script, Deadline hears.
Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce along with Johansson and Jonathan Lia, through These Pictures, and Marc Resteghini (Young Sherlock) through Jack Tar Pictures. Oliver will also serve as executive producer.
The logline is being kept under wraps but when Verve held the auction, the novel was being described as What Lies Beneath meets The Sixth Sense. This was a high-end screen deal and a publishing auction is in the offing. Oliver’s making the jump to an adult thriller after writing YA novels that include Panic; the Delirium trilogy Delirium,...

Not Him, a short film directed by Sarah Young has made a huge splash at the festival circuit. While Young’s film puts the extremely sensitive subject of domestic violence in focus, it approaches the story with an exciting, genre-film making style. The result of that is a very entertaining short film start to finish, which is also very relevant if we go by the context. We sat down with director Young and had quite a chat about how she conceived the film, what inspired her and her future plans about turning Not Him into a full-length feature. Here’s what she shared with us.
Congratulations on making ‘Not Him.‘ Can you tell me how you conceived the film? What was the motivation behind it?
Thank you! I have been a director for a long time but with Not Him, it was my first time when I decided to direct my own script.

At the very start of the noughties, the horror genre was churning out some decent, if unspectacular movies. We saw the re-emergence of the spoof with the first entry in the Scary Movie franchise, Pinhead and co. continued to wreak spiky havoc in Hellraiser: Inferno, while the werewolf genre would get revived with the fun and well received Ginger Snaps. We also got a pretty poor Blair Witch sequel, and let’s face it, the first movie in that series only got traction due to an ingenious marketing campaign, and the media spouting bollocks about people being sick in the cinema from shock. Not the incredibly shaky camera work. Requiem for a Dream provided some messed up thrills, as did the similarly perverted Hollow Man. However, for every decent horror movie that was released, we also got howlers like Da Hip Hop Witch with Eminem. My point is, what the...

Spooky season is nearly here.
And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.

When the end of Yellowstone was officially announced last year, Paramount Network had set the wheels in motion for two more spinoffs. Now, that sequel series is very much beginning to take shape.

Directed by Greg Berlanti and produced by star Scarlett Johansson, the romantic dramedy Fly Me to the Moon was originally meant to be released directly to the Apple TV+ streaming service, but strong test screenings inspired Sony to give the film a theatrical release first. The movie isn’t setting the box office on fire, having pulled in just $20 million worldwide during its first week of release, but it will be heading to Apple TV+ soon anyway – and Berlanti and Johansson were able to establish a strong working relationship during the making of the film. That’s a working relationship they’re now set to continue with a psychological thriller called Sasha, and Deadline reports that Amazon MGM Studios has come out the winner of a five-way auction to land the rights to the project.

The darkness enveloped me, and despite the summer heat outside, the air in the building was cool. I sat in silence, intently focused, anticipating what happened next, but not quite prepared. I tensed up upon seeing the spectral woman directly ahead of me. She silently floated, translucent and seemingly unaware — until at last facing me and lunging with a guttural growl as her face distorted into some horrific entity.

You can’t teach someone to be an artist; as Steven Soderbergh once noted, if you could “we’d all be Stanley Kubrick.” Yet you can teach the craft necessary for artists to express themselves, and in the case of many of the books that follow, you can provide the inspiration necessary to unlock an artist’s best and most exciting ideas. Here are 13 must-read volumes for any aspiring director, books that examine the job from a variety of technical, artistic, and logistical angles. Some are more nuts-and-bolts manuals on how to use the camera, others — the ones written by working directors like Bethany Rooney, Mary Lou Belli, and Ken Kwapis — survival guides for anyone who wants to sustain a career in the industry. It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

In the early days of January, Universal Pictures closed the first major Hollywood deal of 2024 by pre-emptively purchasing the short story package Long Lost, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners producing alongside Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon of Genre Pictures, as well as Scott Glassgold of Ground Control Entertainment. Colin Bannon, who previously wrote and directed the 2009 comedy Love Conquers Paul, is on board to write the screenplay adaptation of his own 50 page short story, which is said to be “in the vein of What Lies Beneath and Rosemary’s Baby“. Now Deadline reports that Universal has scored another Colin Bannon deal, pre-emptively purchasing his short story thriller package Don’t Look, with Janelle Monáe in talks to star and M3GAN, Malignant, and The Nun 2 writer Akela Cooper writing the screenplay, based on an unpublished Bannon short story.

The 2000 survival drama Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt, was one of the best movies of not just the actor’s career but also Robert Zemeckis, who produced and directed the movie. The movie won Hanks an Academy Award nomination, and Zemeckis was praised for his artistry and vision.
The film, though not shot in a linear chronology, managed to capture the essence of the story perfectly, and most of it was thanks to Hanks’ dedication to his performance.

The family begins to witness supernatural entities throughout the house, going so far as to conduct a seance to try and get to the bottom of the hauntings. However, things take a turn for the damned when Catherine realizes that the true horror in her home is still among the land of the living.

Every moment in The Lesson’s early going seemingly exists to illustrate pulp novelist Jim Thompson’s famous saying: “There is only one plot—things are not what they seem.” We see eminent novelist J.M. Sinclair (Richard E. Grant) languidly remarking to an interviewer that “average writers attempt originality…the great writers steal.” Then up-and-coming writer Liam Sommers (Daryl McCormack) is seen studying videos of J.M. with a mysterious intensity before he then shows up at J.M.’s luxurious home to tutor the man’s son, Bertie (Stephen McMillan). Throughout, the close-ups of the algae-covered pond behind the home make it seem as if a better name for the film would have been What Lies Beneath.

Legendary actor Harrison Ford’s storied filmography includes eighty five acting credits. Do you know how many of those eighty five performances came from horror films? Two. For the sake of comparison, he’ll be playing Indiana Jones for the Fifth time this week! One of these horror rarities came in 2000’s What Lies Beneath starring Ford opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and directed by Robert Zemeckis. The other? A made for TV, The Exorcist inspired 1977 film called The Possessed. The last film Ford would make before Star Wars, which would of course turn him into one of the world’s biggest movie stars that very same year.
Available on DVD, The Possessed isn’t terribly difficult to locate for a forty something year old TV movie. The quality is a little shaky and grainy but it only serves to add to the whole “church with carpets haunted by cigarette smoke” vibe...

Harrison Ford was moved to tears amid a rapturous standing ovation following the global world premiere of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” The film just had its first-ever screening at the Cannes Film Festival, and everyone was clearly happy to see him back in action. If Ford’s overwhelmed reaction to their reaction is anything to go by, the feeling was mutual.
The actor, turning 81 in just under two months, was moved amid the seemingly positive response to the fifth and allegedly final “Indiana Jones” movie. Released by Walt Disney, Lucasfilm’s latest actioner comes courtesy of not Steven Spielberg but director James Mangold, who has some experience helming acclaimed “one last ride” franchise installments like Hugh Jackman’s “Logan.”

The technology of cinematography has undergone some of the most seismic shifts in film history this century, with what began in the 2000s as an almost entirely photochemical process transforming into the digitally captured, manipulated, and projected images of today.
