Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev is calling for state funding of the Haifa International Film Festival (Haiff) to be re-appraised, raising objections about films in its upcoming 34th edition that she considers could “harm Israel”.
According to a letter obtained by Israeli media, Regev wrote to Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, demanding his ministry re-examine state funding for Haifa, saying it had broken the law by programming films that undermined “Israeli values and symbols”.

Creepy sets, gore, a sweary Emile Hirsch and lots of gallows humour. We visited the set of indie horror, The Autopsy Of Jane Doe...

Half an hour out east on the Hammersmith & City Line, across a busy dual carriage way, just down from a branch of Tesco’s and tucked away in an old warehouse, about 200 people are making a horror film.
The warehouse interior is now, thanks to the ingenuity of production designer Matt Gant and a few dozen set builders, a basement mortuary in Virginia. There are long corridors. Low lighting that picks out the Victorian wallpaper but leaves corners shrouded in deep shadow. With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Anomalisa (Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson)
Charlie Kaufman, the writer behind Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, teams up with animator Duke Johnson to create a complex emotional drama starring lifelike puppets. The premise is riddled with existential dread of modern-day life, presented uniquely through Kaufman’s idiosyncratic point-of-view. For protagonist and self-help author Michael Stone (voiced soulfully by David Thewlis), everyone around him has the same voice (thanks to...

Families who cut open cadavers together stay together. That, at least, is the vibe given off by “The Autopsy of Jane Doe,” a thriller starring Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch as a team of father-son coroners whose latest corpse provides more questions than answers. Watch the film’s first teaser trailer below.

“The Autopsy of Jane Doe” marks the English-language debut of Norwegian filmmaker André Øvredal, who previously directed “Trollhunter.” The minute-long ad doesn’t show Cox and Hirsch performing what are typically thought of as the standard duties of a mortician, but the two of them do seem rather afraid of whatever’s on the other side of the door they’ve barricaded themselves behind. (Spoiler: It’s probably Jane Doe).

“Spuggy and Plod weren’t runners. They just didn’t see the point”. And thus the hero of the BBC's Geordie Racer and his dog were endeared to a generation of biscuit-eating 1980s schoolchildren.
Part of the long-running Look And Read series of television programming for schools, Geordie Racer was written by The Bill’s Christopher Russell and first aired in 1988. Its ten episodes told a continuing crime story interspersed with factual spots about the North-East and appearances by Wordy, a floating Henry Hoover/Scrabble set who played songs about gerunds. The 22-year-old rapper was shot and killed on Dec. 27, just as his career was beginning to take off. But now HollywoodLife.com has learned that this wasn’t the first time his life came close to ending.
Doe B died tragically in his hometown of Montgomery, Ala., in a horrific night club shoot out. But it turns out that Doe’s trademark eyepatch was not just for show, his eye had actually been wounded in a previous shooting, where he was shot in the face.

The sudden death of the 22-year-old rapper is sad enough, but examining his final actions on Twitter on Dec. 27 just further highlights the tragic fact that his career was only beginning to take off.
Doe B, a 22-year-old rapper who was shot and killed in Montgomery, Ala. on Dec. 27, was only just beginning to taste success — and nothing highlights that sad truth more than his last tweet before being gunned down.
Doe B’s Tragic Final Tweet
Things were going so well for Doe B, and he was feeling it. And on the same night he was shot and killed, he re-tweeted a very confident, very celebratory message:
Don’t ask me how I’m doing bitch I’m Great @Cbmdoeb
— BadGal Lexx❤ (@HotDayyummLexx_) December 28, 2013
The self-assured tone of Doe’s re-tweet really lets you get sense of his state of mind, and you can feel how bright his future was.

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week:
"Monster's University"
What's It About? This prequel to the Disney-Pixar favorite "Monster's Inc." takes us back in time to when Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) weren't the best of friends. Before the two became big Scarers, they were freshman at Monster's University and quickly became competitive rivals.
Why We're In: Crystal's Mike and Goodman's Sully are undoubtedly one of the funniest and most beloved onscreen animated duos. Unlike most prequels, "Monster's University" is packed with fresh humor, fun and charming moments, and will keep the whole family entertained. The prequel was also ranked one of Moviefone's Best Movies of 2013 (So Far).
Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week:
"La Notte" (Criterion Collection)
What's It About? Michelangelo Antonioni's 1961 classic, "La Notte," stars Jeanne Moreau and Marcello Mastroianni as a deteriorating married couple. The two re-examine their relationship over the course of an evening,...

Michael Dougherty gave us something good to eat with his feature directorial debut, Trick 'r Treat. While several horror movies have been situated on or around the holiday of Halloween (John Carpenter's Halloween itself of course...

Paul Knight is not the sort of person you'd take for a fall guy. A youthful-looking but physically imposing 45-year-old, Knight makes no secret of his colourful past. People are sometimes defined by a single instinctive gesture, made off the cuff. In the late 70s, I was recording a TV drama at London Weekend's headquarters on the South Bank in the bleak midwinter. We were working on a scene that required me to be in shirtsleeves.
Suddenly a voice announced over the loud speaker system: "Clear the building immediately!" It was a bomb-scare. Out we all trooped into a dank street on a freezing night. A large figure appeared behind me and draped something over my shoulders. It was Jim Goddard, the director, with a broad smile on his face – it was his coat. Perhaps his need was not as pressing as one of his actors in the middle of a recording that would be resumed asap – nevertheless the moment has stayed with me.

Prolific television and film director whose output included the internationally successful 1983 drama Kennedy
Jim Goddard, who has died aged 77, was among the most prolific and distinguished television drama directors of his generation. Bleak and violent atmosphere and vivid characterisation were the hallmarks of his more than 200 distinctive works over the course of four decades. His Kennedy (1983) was shown simultaneously on Us network television, in the UK and Germany, and achieved the highest recorded viewing figures to that date for a televised drama.
Goddard's work included the 13-part drama Fox (1980), Reilly: Ace of Spies (1983) and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (1982), the early Channel 4 version of the RSC production. The power and visual immediacy of his directorial style owed as much to arthouse film as it did to his abilities as a painter. Indeed, he never forsook painting, which he studied at the Slade in London, or his love of set design,...

We’ve made it through another election season, and it was quite a nasty one ( at least here in Missouri ). After we’ve cleaned up all the mud that was slung and before it starts all over again for the big national elections ( with the conventions and debates ) let’s have a few laughs at the whole process. That’s just what The Campaign aims for. What’s interesting about this late Summer satire is that it brings together talents from several different comedy film camps ( much as The Expendables teamed up several action stars ). Helming the hysterics is Jay Roach, perhaps best known for Meet The Parents and its first sequel along with the Austin Powers trilogy ( he’s made two acclaimed real-life political films for HBO: ” Game Change” and ” Recount ” ). One of this film’s candidates is played by Will Farrell, a member of the media-dubbed” frat pack...

When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center. At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about.
As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other, in this mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy from “Meet the Parents” director Jay Roach that takes today’s political circus to its logical next level. March is going to be a marvelous month for fans of British TV as Acorn Media and Athena release something old, something new and something that has elements that people once regarded as being … well a little blue!
Out Acorn Media
Originally broadcast in 1978, Out is a Thames TV drama about a convict named Frank Ross (Tom Bell) who emerges from jail after serving an eight year stretch for his role in a heist. Out has elements that you find in shows such as The Sweeney, Minder and dare I even say Life on Mars only this show is rather more serious than those classics. Ross is a cold customer who is intent on finding the rat who caused his arrest.

In a life that could have stepped straight from the pages of his beloved Dickens, albeit a 20th century and queer version, Peter William Burton was a boy of humble Hackney origins, born as the Second World War staggered to a close, who by dint of an extraordinary passion for books blazed a fascinating trail. His father was homosexual. Common of many of his kind, then persecuted, he married as a means of disguise. Like father like son, but their shared sexuality gave them nothing in common. What it created was an unhappy backdrop for growing up, and a desire to leave home and school as soon as possible. When he read the eulogy at his father's funeral, he stated, "George Burton was an old bugger!" Most of those gathered assumed he was being affectionately ribald. He was in fact being bluntly truthful. It is a great shame that he...

J.J. Abrams has found a new cast member for his highly anticipated Star Trek sequel. Variety reports that Alice Eve has been cast in a part that is believed to be new to the canon. The She’s Out of My League star beat out Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) for the role. Paramount declined to comment on this news, but her deal is expected to be locked down soon. She will hopefully star opposite Benicio del Toro, who’s deal is also pending to play the role of the villain in the sequel. They will join most fo the cast from the first film, including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.
Abrams is directing based on the script by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof. The sequel will be produced by Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci, Lindelof, Bryan Burk, and David Ellison...

"Roland Emmerich's Anonymous is a well-polished cowpat that will confuse and bore those who know nothing about Shakespeare and incense those who know almost anything," declares David Edelstein in New York. The film begins with Derek Jacobi announcing on a contemporary Broadway stage that the plays we attribute to Shakespeare are, in fact, the work of "Edward de Vere, seventeenth Earl of Oxford, who could not, by virtue of his rank, have anything to do with the theater and so handed over his masterworks — many of which were not performed until well after his death — to a boobish actor named Will Shakespeare, who incidentally was the one who stabbed Christopher Marlowe in the eye. Less improbably, De Vere screwed Queen Elizabeth, as well as (accidentally) his own mum…. Apart from its ineptitude, Anonymous is peculiarly beside the point. Shakespeare's succession of masterpieces, near masterpieces, and thrilling misses is a...

Conan the Barbarian, Colombiana, Fright Night, and Final Destination 5 will be rounding the rest of the summer, but the last big blockbuster left in my opinion is Rupert Wyatt‘s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Opinions have generally been back-and-forth, but 20th Century has been pushing it as a technical marvel, with Weta Digital’s unprecedented work.
The trailers have ranged from impressive to a bit silly, but the first international press screenings have just let out and we have rounded up all the early impressions. Check them out below, partially thanks to BoM. James Franco stars alongside John Lithgow, Freida Pinto, Brian Cox, Tom Felton, and Andy Serkis in the blockbuster.
Update: Bleeding Cool has the first official review up. Check out an excerpt below:
The lead character of Rise is Caesar the chimpanzee, and it’s his evolution that drives the narrative changes, the action stepping up as he does.

Film director whose career took him from gritty television plays to Hollywood thrillers
People who talk wistfully of the "golden age of British television drama" are often accused of viewing the past through the rosy lens of nostalgia. But a clear-eyed examination of the era proves that such slots as the BBC's The Wednesday Play (1964-70) and Play for Today (1970-84) were unsurpassed as breeding grounds for talented directors such as John Mackenzie, who has died after a stroke aged 83. Like most of his contemporaries who gained their experience by working in television – Philip Saville, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Ken Loach, Mike Newell, Michael Apted and Mike Leigh – Mackenzie went on to make feature films, notably his superb London-based gangster picture, The Long Good Friday (1980).
The television background trained Mackenzie to work quickly on taut and realistic narratives, within a tight budget and on schedule. One of his first jobs was as...

Bin Laden's Young Wife Identified
Related story on The Daily Beast: Britain's Crush on Obama
By the time Osama bin Laden was killed, he was down to only one of his five wives: Amal Ahmed Abdul Fatah, the youngest and his rumored favorite. By the time he moved into his Pakistan mansion, Bin Laden had divorced one of his wives and three others had moved to Syria, according to ABC News, but Amal had remained with him. She had been given to him as a gift when she was still a teenager, and eventually had three children with bin Laden-a daughter and two sons, who lived with them in the compound.
On the night of the raid, Amal was in the bedroom with Bin Laden, and apparently reacted with fury to the Navy SEALs who had come to kill her husband.

Civilisation
Blu-ray, 2 Entertain
Out on 9 May
Historian Kenneth Clark introduces this landmark documentary series with a quote from John Ruskin about how the key to understanding a great nation is to look at their deeds, words and art, the last being "the only trustworthy one".
So begins an epic voyage around the historical culture of western civilisation, taking in the greats such as Da Vinci, Mozart, Dante, Shakespeare, etc, working backwards from their art to discover how it was formed by their lives. Overseen by David Attenborough (when he was head of BBC2) and still as bright and informative as it was when first transmitted in 1969, Civilisation has yet to be bettered. Shot on film (the remastered Blu-ray looks stunning) and in colour (when most TV sets were still black and white), it's a precursor to many of the great shows from the golden era of factual TV such as Life On Earth,...

Thor (12A)
(Kenneth Branagh, 2011, Us) Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Kat Dennings, Idris Elba. 114 mins
Let the silly season commence with this expensive comic-book movie, which takes full advantage of its second-tier superhero, free casting rein and Asgard-sized budget to deliver some premium disposable spectacle. Hemsworth's beefy, impetuous thunder god is literally brought down to earth, where thanks to mortal hotties like Portman, he learns there's more to life than swinging a hammer around, but not much more.
Cedar Rapids (15)
(Miguel Arteta, 2011, Us) Ed Helms, John C Reilly, Anne Heche. 87 mins
The corruption of Helms's naive smalltown nerd via a debauched midwest insurance convention is as broadly amusing as you'd expect, striking a filthy-sweet tone somewhere between the Us Office and The Hangover.
Tracker (12A)
(Ian Sharp, 2010, Nz) Ray Winstone, Temuera Morrison, Andy Anderson. 102 mins
Credit to Ray for straying off home turf, as a Boer veteran...

Well, folks, 2010 is officially in the can, and unlike 2009 horror movie fans took it in the can a lot less this year. Don't just read along, though ... give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you regarding what we nailed and what we dropped the ball on, so let the games begin!

The combined resumes of the cast of Red is staggeringly impressive, and having Bruce Willis lead a crew not particularly known for lighter fare drives the feel and flavor of a film that might easily have had no ability to find footing. Yet another graphic novel translation, this one brings us an older collection of action heroes, branded Retired Extremely Dangerous, and the mix of “changing of the guard” and “distaste for the new guard,” gives us a broader landscape than most action-oriented bits of fun.
Frank Moses (Willis) is getting on in years, at least from a spy game perspective if no other, and the best he’s managed in the normal life department is a relationship over the phone with Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker), who he calls repeatedly at work just for the chance to chat. When a Black Ops squad shows up at his door, he’s suddenly...
