Conjured through black magic by the Nazis near the end of World War II, a baby demon is rescued by Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm (John Hurt). Broom raises the little red creature like a son and names him Hellboy. Now an adult, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) is a member of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) where he and other "freaks" like him work to defend humanity against the forces of darkness. When the evil Russian monk Grigori Rasputin (Karel Roden), Hellboy's summoner, shows up with a plan to get Hellboy to open the gates of hell and release the Seven Gods of Chaos by using his "Right Hand of Doom", Hellboy must pair up with young, naïve FBI agent John Myers (Rupert Evans), who Hellboy sees as a rival for Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), the love of his life.
Hellboy is based on the Dark Horse comic book mini-series Hellboy: Seed of Destruction (1994) by Mike Mignola. The comic was adapted for the movie by Mexican film-maker Guillermo del Toro. A sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) was released in 2008. Hellboy (2019) is on the books but no release date has been set.
This is called a flipped shot. They filmed the shot with Ron wearing the RHoD on his right, but for whatever reason they decided to flip the shot during post-production making it look like the RHoD was on Ron's left.
They are the Seven Who Are One: Amon, Nergal, Iira, Beuu, Nunn, Namrat, and Abad, together known as Ogdru Jahad. In creating them, Mike Mignola was very much influenced by the gods and monsters of pulp fiction, specifically those of H.P. Lovecraft (Cthulhu mythos) and Robert E. Howard (Conan The Cimmerian). The look of the dragon is highly Lovecraftian while its fictional birth place, Hyperborea, is a key location in the Conan universe.
Myers' reminder that Broom gave him a choice to be what he wants to be stops Hellboy from opening the final lock. He breaks off his horns and stabs Rasputin with one of them. As Rasputin dies, his chest bursts open revealing a behemoth that rapidly grows to mammoth size. It kills Rasputin and his loyal girlfriend and then goes after Myers and Hellboy, who is carrying Liz's body from the chamber. Myers gives Hellboy a grenade belt, and Hellboy returns to fight the behemoth. After a difficult fight, Hellboy manages to get himself swallowed by the behemoth, then sets off the grenades and blows up the monster. When Hellboy returns to Myers and Liz, Myers tells him that Liz has no pulse. Hellboy whispers into her ear, and Liz begins to stir. Hellboy takes her into his arms. She remembers hearing his voice in the dark but can't remember what he said. "I said..." Hellboy tells her, ""hey you on the other side..let her go because, for her, I'll cross over and then you'll be sorry"." Hellboy and Liz kiss, Liz's fire enveloping but not hurting them. In a voiceover, Myers repeats Broom's words spoken earlier: What makes a man a man? A friend of mine once wondered. Is it his origins? The way he comes to life? I don't think so. It's the choices he makes, not how he starts things but how he decides to end them.
While it was originally planned for the aquatic emphath Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) to be in the final act of the movie, budget constraints forced Guillermo to write him out of the end. It would have cost another million dollars to keep him in.
No, but during them, Manning (Jeffrey Tambor) is shown still in Kroenen's lair radioing to ask where everyone is and telling them to hurry up because it's spooky in there. Sounds of the hell hounds can be heard in the background. Manning appears in the sequel as well. Thus, he lived.
Unfortunately, no. While not blatantly stated in the movie, Guillermo del Toro has stated that Clay didn't survive the night.
Though DHP agreed to do the voice of Abe, he refused to take credit for the role since he felt that the role truly belonged to Doug Jones who actually played Abe. Doug also had provided the voice, but was dubbed afterwards because the studios wanted a celebrity 'name' to voice the character. David actually based Abe's voice on Doug's own, as he heard it on-screen in the looping session.
You get a little more than 10 minutes of extra footage. A more detailed description of what's been added and changed is noted here.
