Every car seen in the movie (with the exception of the opening sequence) is either a lime green or black new Volkswagen Beetle. The cars in the opening sequence are all classic VW Beetles.
This movie is based on the popular recurring Saturday Night Live (1975) character that Molly Shannon had portrayed throughout her time as a cast member on the show. Shannon performed the character on 17 SNL sketches before the film's release. She would only reprise the role three times after the movie premiered in theaters: twice on SNL, and once on Saturday Night Live: 40th Anniversary Special (2015).
During filming, director Bruce McCulloch asked that Karyn Dwyer, who played Summer, remove her belly piercing, as McCulloch believed that Catholic school girls shouldn't be pierced. Coincidently, Dwyer did, in fact, attend a Catholic school during her school years.
The name of the town in which they live is called Besamee Heights (pronounced bessa-mee). Besame (bessa-may) means "Kiss me" in Spanish.
