About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. The finished film was given a theatrical release on September 20th (you can read our review Here)… and it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. It has only earned $21 million worldwide. Now it’s time for the movie to receive a PVOD release, so maybe it will be more successful when people are able to watch it in the comfort of their own homes. Lionsgate has announced they will be giving Never Let Go a Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through release on October 11th. A press release notes that the film “will be available to buy for $24.99 and to rent...

Following a years-long development process, Apple will officially make a TV series based on William Gibson’s acclaimed sci-fi novel Neuromancer.
The tech giant and streamer has handed out a 10-episode series order to the drama based on the 1984 cyberpunk novel that launched Gibson’s career and the so-called Sprawl trilogy that also includes novels Count Zero (1986) and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988).
Dark Winds creator Graham Roland and J.D. Dillard (The Twilight Zone) created the series for television. The series, a co-production between Skydance Television and Anonymous Content, will see Roland serve as showrunner with Dillard on board to direct the pilot.
Apple says Neuromancer revolves around a “damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.”

It’s an old canard in the movie business: Never underestimate a Holocaust movie when it comes to Oscar attention. From Hungary’s Best Foreign Language winner “Son of Saul” (2016) and Oscar-winners “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961), “Cabaret” (1973), “Sophie’s Choice” (1983), and “The Pianist” (2004) to Steven Spielberg’s Best Picture winner “Schindler’s List” (1994), many Holocaust subjects, especially shorts and documentary features, have won Oscars. Documentaries like “Anne Frank Remembered” won for 1995, “The Long Way Home” for 1997, “The Last Days” for 1998, and “Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport” for 2000, and more recently, the nonfiction short “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life” won for 2014 — just one week after its subject, Alice Herz-Sommer, the world’s oldest Holocaust survivor, passed away.
This season’s most decorated Holocaust film, “The Zone of Interest” (Metascore: 91) has multiple Oscar advantages. First, the film, which British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer adapted from the Martin Amis novel of the same name,...

Five years ago seems aeons in an era so disrupted by Covid. So it comes as a surprise to realize that the original screen “Bird Box” arrived a full 14 months or so in advance of pandemic restrictions — becoming an early Netflix pop-culture phenomenon before lockdown made that sort of thing a regular occurrence. Susanne Bier’s film of Josh Malerman’s sci-fi horror novel was intriguing and suspenseful enough, even if its emphasis on psychological drama over thrills made for a somewhat unlikely breakout hit.
Inevitably, if belatedly, there’s now a follow-up — but not an adaptation of Malerman’s own print sequel, which continued the travails of the character played by Sandra Bullock. Instead, “Bird Box Barcelona” is a “parallel story” set on another continent entirely. Written and directed by Alex and David Pastor, whose prior genre efforts “The Last Days” (2013) and “Carriers” (2009) both had similar basic premises, it...

Every month brings a new slate of entertainment to streaming services everywhere, but each turn of the calendar also brings the tragic removal of a list of movies and television shows. While Netflix is debuting a bevy of releases in May 2023, the streaming service is losing some treasured titles. Good thing you have this guide to make sure you catch everything that may have been sitting in your Netflix queue before they mysteriously disappear.
Unfortunately, juggling distribution rights in the ongoing proliferation of streaming services makes it a headache to keep up with who owns what. HBO Max is the biggest offender of losing its own original content, as the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery and the induction of CEO David Zaslav has wiped a chunk of HBO Max exclusives from the platform. Jessica Chastain is the latest A-lister to score her own show at Apple.
The Oscar-winning The Eyes of Tammy Faye actress will star in The Savant, an eight-episode limited series based on a true story published by Cosmopolitan.
While Apple is remaining mum on details, Andrea Stanley — who is attached as a consultant on the Chastain show — penned a Cosmo story in August 2019 under the headline “Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?” that detailed a woman known as “The Savant,” an investigator whose job is to take down the country’s most violent men before they can carry out large-scale attacks.
Melissa James Gibson (Anatomy of a Scandal, The Americans) is on board to serve as showrunner on the series, which is a co-production between Fifth Season (formerly known as Endeavor Content) and Anonymous Content. Gibson is based at Fifth Season with an overall deal.

Justin Lin may be the foremost director of the "Fast and Furious" franchise, but he's taking a break from the Hollywood big leagues for his next film: an indie movie about the misguided missionary John Allen Chau. Before helming half of the entries in one of the most successful blockbuster series in modern times, Lin directed indie movies that centered on the Asian-American communities of Southern California, including the quirky comedy "Shopping for Fangs" and the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-nominated "Better Luck Tomorrow."
Lin directed "Shopping for Fangs" with Quentin Lee when they were both students in UCLA's film school in 1997. The film marks the acting debut of John Cho, who would go on to work with Lin on his follow-up feature, "Better Luck Tomorrow," as well as years later on "Star Trek Beyond." Exclusive: After spending the past decade plus-directing some of the biggest tentpoles in town, Justin Lin is returning to his indie roots. Sources tell Deadline he is set to direct The Last Days of John Allen Chau as his next film. Ben Ripley is penning the script, with filming to begin this spring across the globe.
Lin has spent the past 15 years helping turn the Fast & Furious series into one of the biggest franchises in the industry while also stepping in to direct the tentpole Star Trek Beyond in that period as well. Even as he rose in the ranks of A-list directors, he would let it be known to be people in his inner circle that he always wanted to get back to his indie roots, and once the project landed financing the opportunity to direct the film was too hard to pass up.

When the documentary film The Last Days screened at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival in 1999, Steven Spielberg, its executive producer, kept a relatively low profile. Although he attended the fest in support of the project, his hope was that the film would speak for itself.
The Last Days, directed by James Moll, was produced by the Shoah Foundation, which Spielberg founded in 1994 to collect and preserve the testimony of survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides. (In 2006, the foundation partnered with the University of Southern California and is now known as the USC Shoah Foundation.)
The film recounts the experiences of five Hungarian Jews who lived through Germany’s occupation of Hungary and the concentration camps, before then following them as they revisit their hometowns and the sites of the camps. It won an Academy Award for best feature documentary and, in 2021, was remastered and rereleased on Netflix.

Abel, The Northerners, The Last Days of Emma Blank, Schneider vs. Bax, and his new re-edit of Grimm are now on Film Movement Plus. We said in our review of Schneider vs. Bax, “Hitman films tend to be action-packed and heavy with tropes familiar to that particular sub-genre of thrillers. Yet Dutch filmmaker Alex van Warmerdam hopes to subvert those expectations by crafting an almost absurdist, Beckett-style drama between two contract killers hired to take out the other.”

Bird Box's surprising success apparently prompted Netflix and the producers Dylan Clark the Chris Morgan to consider starting a franchise that adapts the premise of the original film to different parts of the world, in films shot in the languages ??of each country and with local teams and casts. Barcelona has been the city chosen to make the first score under the captain...

What a great character Ptolemy Grey is for a marvelous actor like Samuel L. Jackson. Make that characters. Because in Apple‘s The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Walter Mosley‘s emotionally thrilling six-part adaptation of his 2010 novel, we meet many versions of Ptolemy. At first, this old man is a lost soul, living amid filth and clutter in a fearful haze of dementia, surrounded by ghosts from his turbulent past. When his great-nephew Reggie (The Unicorn‘s Omar Miller), the only relative who cares for him with any compassion, is suddenly murdered, we fear Ptolemy will be forgotten forever. (Credit: Apple TV+) Don’t let the oppressively downbeat tone of the opening chapter mislead you. Soon enough, two events change everything in old Ptolemy’s world: First, the arrival of plucky teenage orphan Robyn (tough yet tender Dominique Fishback), who takes charge of cleaning up his infested apartment so...

In a first teaser trailer for The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, the titular character (played by Samuel L. Jackson) is reminded to be careful what you wish for, as he seeks out a miraculous memory cure.
Jackson stars as Ptolemy Grey, an ailing man tossed aside by his family and friends so cruelly, even he begins to neglect himself and his cluttered and crumbling home. Lonely and struggling with dementia, Ptolemy suddenly finds himself in the trusted care of an orphaned teenager named Robyn, (The Deuce’s Dominique Fishback), who starts out as a glorified babysitter but becomes almost a surrogate grandchild.

Steven Spielberg Does What He Wants: 6 Things Every Fan Must Know About Hollywood’s Biggest Director
We all know that Steven Spielberg floats at the top of the Hollywood food chain. He’s Hollywood’s most reliable director brand, and can get movies made that would never get a greenlight anywhere else — like Oscar-winning historical drama “Lincoln.” His next move? A high-profile Pentagon Papers film rumored to star Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep that Variety reports will open on December 22, and will inevitably be an Oscar contender.
How does he keep his enviable status, even at age 70?
1. Steven does what Steven wants.
Spielberg is a moving target, even for those at Amblin Entertainment who work closely with him every day. While he’s worth some $3 billion and likes to make money, his directing choices are driven by a complicated set of variables. He seeks to avoid any risk of failure. It all depends on where his confidence — and artistic drive — takes him. Is he ready to...

A horror movie set in space? Mark reckons you might find some of the various components of The Last Days On Mars a little familiar...
It wouldn't have been hard to slap a “The Thing Meets Gravity” or a “28 Days Later in space” strapline on the marketing campaign for The Last Days Of Mars, but it's arrived with markedly less fanfare than most mainstream horror movies released this year, pushed back from its intended release last September.
The film is a nuts-and-bolts sci-fi horror flick that played out of competition at last year's Cannes film festival, during directors' fortnight, but it's the interesting way in which it's been executed that marks it for such distinction, more than any real sort of innovation or unpredictability.
Based on The Animators, a 1975 short story by Sydney J. Bounds, the film takes place over the last 19 hours of...

Amanda Nevill, CEO of the BFI, the UK's lead film agency said: "We join the whole British film industry in congratulating Steve McQueen on the awards for his remarkable and important film, 12 Years A Slave, and Alfonso Cuarón whose astonishing film, Gravity was made right here in the UK. Hard-hitting slavery drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor becomes first film from black director to win top Academy award
• How the night unfolded
• Full list of winners
12 Years a Slave has won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a nine-strong field that included Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle for the headline prize at this year's ceremony. 12 Years a Slave becomes the first film from a black director to take the best picture Oscar.
Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's award-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by among others Brad Pitt's Plan B outfit. Pitt also takes a small but pivotal role as abolitionist carpenter Samuel Bass.

The Oscars took place on Sunday with "12 Years a Slave" ending up being the big winner of the night, with a total of three awards for best picture, best adapted screenplay and best supporting actress. But it was "Gravity" that took home the most prizes, a total of seven. Most of the awards were for achievement in the technical department, except for Alfonso Cuaron, who won in the best director category. Meanwhile, Matthew McConaughey won the best actor award for "Dallas Buyers Club" and Cate Blanchett won the best actress award for "Blue Jasmine." Check out the full list of nominees and winners (marked in red) below. And let us know if you think the academy got it right. The 2014 Oscar Awards have been handed out and it to no real surprise... there were few surprises as 12 Years a Slave took home Best Picture as well as Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley) while Gravity, unsurprisingly, ended up taking home the night's largest number of wins with seven, none bigger than a Best Director win for Alfonso Cuaron. In the acting categories the only category that seemed up for grabs was Supporting Actress, but as I said, that went to Lupita, which may have something to do with Jennifer Lawrence wearing red... I learned on E! that no one wearing red has ever won the Oscar. Yeah, that's hard-hitting journalism right there. Dallas Buyers Club co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Best Actor and Supporting Actor respectively while Cate Blanchett took home her second Oscar, winning Best Actress for Blue Jasmine. In the acting categories, Cate Blanchett won Best Actress, Matthew McConaughey was awarded the Best Actor trophy, while Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong'o received the Supporting Actor and Actress awards, respectively.

The Oscar nominations for the 86th Academy Awards have been announced but who will win and who should win? In a banner year for great movies, 2013 gave us thought-provoking and entertaining experience at the cinema. On Oscar night, Steve McQueen.s .12 Years a Slave. will take home the top prize but Alfonso Cuaron.s .Gravity. will win all the technical awards including Best Director. Quite fitting since one provoked (.12 Years.) and the other entertained (.Gravity.).
And for those who know me, the Academy Awards is my Super Bowl! I.m a nerd when it comes to the Oscars! So I tried to predict the winners to help you with your Oscar pool.
And here's my complete and utterly fearless 2014 Oscar predictions:
Actor in a Leading Role
Christian Bale in .American Hustle.
Bruce Dern in .Nebraska.
Leonardo DiCaprio in .The Wolf of Wall Street.
Chiwetel Ejiofor in .12 Years a Slave.
Matthew McConaughey...

It’s been two weeks since the Oscar nominations were announced and after most of the major guilds have announced their awards, the Oscar race has really taken shape. We’re just a little more than a month out and it’s time to take stock of the race with an Oscar prediction update.
Analysis of a Picture/Director Split
Picking a director/picture split is not a really smart enterprise. 62 out of the 85 winners of Best Picture have won along with their directors and four of those case were when the director of the film wasn’t even nominated. Particularly since the DGA has been giving awards, the winner of that prize nearly always goes on to Best Picture glory (only four winners in the past 25 years has seen their films lose Best Picture). In that same time speak, only two directors have lost...

Oscar has smiled upon Australia this morning, with Academy Awards nominations for Cate Blanchett, Catherine Martin, Beverly Dunn, Michael Wilkinson and Dave Clayton.
If Blanchett wins best actress for Blue Jasmine, she will become the first Australian actor in history with two gold statues. She was named best supporting actress for The Aviator in 2005.
Martin (production design, costume design) and Dunn (costume design) are nominated for their work in The Great Gatsby. .Cm. won twice before, for art direction and costume design for Moulin Rouge! This is Dunn.s first Oscar nod; she won an AFI award for Australia, shared with Martin, Ian Gracie and Karen Murphy.
La-based costume designer Wilkinson scored his first nomination for American Hustle.
Visual effects wizard Dave Clayton was recognised for his work on The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, shared with Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon and Eric Reynolds. Clayton, Letteri and Saindon were nominated...

American Hustle and Gravity lead the nominations for the 86th Annual Academy Awards! Both films received 10 nominations, and both of them deserve it. In fact, I'm pretty happy to see how the nominations turned out this year, a lot of them weren't surprising at all. The one movie I'm happy that got some recognition that I didn't think would was Philomena. It's a small film from Steve Coogan that is an amazing movie that you should all see when you get a chance.
American Hustle and Gravity are going to be the big winners this year at the Oscars. It will be interesting to see who wins what though. The one person I am truly rooting for this year is Leonardo DiCaprio. He's nominated for Best Actor in The Wolf of Wall Street, and if there is one performance he needs to win for, it's for that film. He was freakin' incredible in it!
