Washington is known for his great body of film work. And if he was to look back on his filmography, he’d have every reason to be proud of his contributions to cinema. Many of his films have drawn hundreds of millions of dollars and enjoyed numerous praise and accolades. But he’s always asserted that he never rewatches his past work. When Rsng once asked Washington what his favorite movie was, he simply responded it was always the next movie he hadn’t done yet.

“That is my answer to that,” Washington said. “I’m interested in the choosing, I’m interested in finding the character, I’m interested in the process.

As someone who has never punched somebody in this lifetime, I do love to watch movies about boxing. Yes, it’s a pretty nonsensical sport, but when every punch, jab, and hook is injected with complex emotions and whatnot, it does make for an enjoyable viewing experience. I grew up watching the Rocky movies, and the sequel franchise, Creed, is pretty damn good. Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull is a masterpiece, and there’s no doubt about that. Cinderella Man, The Fighter, and Southpaw are some other amazing examples. Veering away from the traditional “hero’s journey” format, there’s The Harder They Fall, The Hurricane, Million Dollar Baby, and, dare I say, Real Steel. Following the success of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1991, Hollywood released an eight-year-long tidal wave of serial killer thrillers, each one pulpier than the last. This was the era of "Seven," "Copycat," "Along Came a Spider," "Jennifer 8," "See No Evil," "Eye of the Beholder," "Sliver," "Knight Moves," and any number of others. Right at the end of the decade came Phillip Noyce's 1999 thriller "The Bone Collector," based on the airport novel by Jeffery Deaver. Deaver's original novel was the first of the long-running Lincoln Rhyme series, a series that saw its 16th installment published in 2023. Lincoln Rhyme, thanks to a spinal accident, could not move his body below his neck, and fought crime from his bed, deducting details, looking at pictures, and relying on his team. 

In the film adaptation, Denzel Washington played Lincoln Rhyme and Angelina Jolie played his plucky crime fighting partner Amelia Donaghy.

Since the establishment of the Academy Awards in 1929, exactly 60 films have achieved lone lead male acting nominations, meaning they were each recognized in the Best Actor category and nowhere else. The last such instance occurred in 2023 and involved “Aftersun” star Paul Mescal, who, at 26, stood out as the youngest member of a lineup consisting only of first-time Oscar contenders. Dan Gordon, the screenwriter of “The Hurricane” and “Wyatt Earp,” resigned from the Writers Guild of America on Tuesday over the guild’s silence on the Hamas attacks on Israel.

A 56-year member of the union, Gordon is also a veteran of the Israel Defense Forces. He grew up in Israel and the U.S., and holds citizenship in both countries and in Canada.

He wrote a letter to WGA West leadership on Tuesday saying he will elect “financial core” status. In an interview, he noted that the guild had previously taken stands in support of Black Lives Matter and the #MeToo movement, and that its refusal to condemn the Hamas attacks is “appalling.”

In the face of criticism, the Writers Guild of America West is explaining why it has so far not issued a statement on Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel — and decrying the “atrocities committed by Hamas.”

“The Guild’s decision not to issue a statement on the events of October 7th has caused pain within our membership that we did not intend,” top guild officers, including president Meredith Stiehm, vice president Michele Mulroney and secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, wrote WGA West members in an email on Tuesday. “We believe it is important to both explain our process and to attempt to rectify the situation, as well as to unequivocally state that antisemitism and Islamophobia have no place in this Guild.”

The officers explained that in the early days following the attacks, leaders were “horrified” but felt it was “outside the purview of a U.S. labor union representing writers to comment on it.

Dan Gordon, a 56-year member of the Writers Guild of America and reserve captain for the Israeli Defense Forces, published an open letter on Tuesday resigning from the union over its failure to condemn the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

“The failure of the Guild’s leadership to issue even the mildest condemnation of the worst massacre of a religious minority in the Middle East since Isis carried out similar atrocities against the Yezidis is appalling,” Gordon said in his letter. “It is corrosive to me as a writer and repugnant to every fiber of my being as a person of conscience.”

Betty Ann Bruno, Bay Area local news reporter and a Munchkin in the classic film “The Wizard of Oz,” has died at the age of 91, according to San Francisco Fox affiliate Ktvu.

Bruno was born on in Hawaii but grew up in Hollywood, where she got bit roles in films like John Ford’s “The Hurricane” as a young child. At the age of 7, she was one of the children cast alongside the 124 little people picked to play the Munchkins in “The Wizard of Oz,” and was one of the last surviving members of the production.

After graduating from Stanford, Bruno got her start in broadcast journalism as a political talk show producer before stepping in front of the camera as a general assignment reporter for Ktvu in the 1970s.

She would become a mainstay of the local network news team over the next two decades and win three Emmys for her work,...

Rob Mitchell, chief financial officer of Bold Films who earlier worked at Beacon Pictures, the Samuel Goldwyn Company and Hyde Park Entertainment, died July 28 of a pulmonary embolism at his home in Thousand Oaks, CA. He was 55. Mitchell was the twin brother of Gregg Mitchell, the WGA West’s events manager.

Since 2008, he was the CFO at Bold Films, where he oversaw finance activities for the indie outfit, responsible for its operations and production slate.

There, Mitchell worked on the Jake Gyllenhaal starrers Nightcrawler (2014), Stronger (2017) and The Guilty (2021), plus Legion (2010), Drive (2011), Whiplash (2014), No Escape (2015), The Neon Demon (2016), Shot Caller (2017), Colette (2018) and Vox Lux (2018).

The Billboard Music Awards announced most of their 2022 winners via social media before tonight’s main ceremony airs on NBC at 8:00pm/5:00pm Pacific. Drake, Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, The Kid Laroi, and Olivia Rodrigo were among the most awarded artists. Check out the complete updating list of winners here.

Curiously, the BBMAs didn’t save the best for last. Top Artist, the biggest category of the night, has already been presented to Drake. It’s the Canadian rapper’s third victory in the category, setting a new record for the most wins. He had previously been tied with 50 Cent, Adele, Destiny’s Child, Swift, and Usher at two wins apiece. Drake also claimed four other prizes: Top Male Artist, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Male Artist, and Top Rap Album (“Certified Lover Boy”).

“American Idol’s” Disney Night turned out to be the end of the road for three talented contestants: country crooner Mike Parker, pop artist Emyrson Flora and soul singer Lady K. In our recent poll, we asked “Idol” viewers to tell us which of three eliminees was most robbed of a spot in next week’s Top 7, and the poll results are in. Mike led with 35 of the vote, compared to Emyrson at 27 and Lady K at 24; the other 14 of respondents chose the “None of them” option.

In our comments section, “American Idol” watcher Donna A Gerken said, “Mike got robbed … love his voice.” Fellow fan Elaine Hamilton chimed in, “I am so so sorry Mike Parker was eliminated.
