After a nearly 5-decade run in Hollywood, Tom Cruise has become one of the industry’s most bankable stars. The actor has become known for his dedication, physical stunts, and larger-than-life roles. However, some of his roles have required a more immersive style of method acting. While the actor has always gone all-out for his films, he revealed that drawing from his own life experience was not something he believed in.

The legacy of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt can almost be considered predestined in Hollywood – so powerful is their impact on the industry today. However, the problem with legends is that there can only be one of them at a time. And the world will never settle for knocking either Pitt or Cruise off the pedestal to raise the other.

Blurry. If you know Dash Shaw’s films but haven’t read his books, you might be unsure what to expect when picking up his newest graphic novel, Blurry. My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea (2016) is a high-school melodrama that dovetails with a disaster plot: soon after a student discovers that the school building is not up to code, an earthquake sends the building into the sea. The characters, rendered with thick lines, are often tinted and filled in by expressive bursts of color. The animation style in Cryptozoo (2021) is more detailed, the colors more lush; the story seems more straightforward at first—the stewards of the titular enclosure attempt to capture another mythical beast for their menagerie and protect it from the humans who want to exploit it—but it raises questions which are meant to encourage deeper thinking from the audience.Ever since his first graphic novel,...

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood, thanks to his recent string of hits such as the Mission: Impossible and Top Gun sequels. However, Cruise made a name for himself in the 1990s and early 2000s by working with several visionary directors, including the likes of Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese.

Despite critical acclaim for his collaborations with auteurs, Cruise has distanced himself from them. Instead, the actor has stuck to the tried and tested action formula, which mostly resulted in box office success for him. However, there is a surprising reason why Cruise no longer works with directors like Spielberg and Scorsese, and here is everything you need to know about it.

The pandemic and Hollywood strikes battered box office for independent cinema is turning a corner, distribution execs told a panel at the Zurich Summit industry conflab on Saturday.
“We’ve been in a trench trying to get out,” said Rebecca Kearey, Head of International at Searchlight Pictures, which enjoyed box office success with Poor Things late last year and into 2024.
“Last fall was the beginning of our business coming back with some of those phenomenal award season movies that really delivered for audiences. I feel we’re coming out of this trench, internationally and domestically, in the U.S.”
Kearey was joined on stage by Neon CEO Tom Quinn, Film4 Head of Distribution & Sales Stefanie Fahrion and Nathanaël Karmitz, chairman of French independent film powerhouse MK2.

Actor Tom Cruise is known for his utmost dedication to the cinematic experience. In 2022, he ‘saved cinema’ by releasing the air-force action film Top Gun: Maverick, which earned more than a billion at the box office and is credited with bringing back audiences to theaters. He has supported good cinema since the beginning of his career.
Even before he revived the exhibition industry after the pandemic with Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise reportedly helped out budding filmmakers he saw potential in. His endorsement for 1998’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels reportedly saved the producers from retiring before they even started and launched the careers of Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie.

Bob Yerkes, the acrobatic stunt performer who slid down a clock tower cable for Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future and hung around the Statue of Liberty under repair for Fred Ward in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, has died. He was 92.
Yerkes died Tuesday of natural causes in Northridge, Darlene Ava Williams, a stunt performer and one of his many mentees, announced.
The amiable Yerkes, who started out in the circus and was a skilled trapeze aerialist and tightrope walker, also plummeted from a helicopter through a roof in Breakout (1975), starring Charles Bronson.
“I was getting ready for the stunt and the guy said, ‘Break a Leg!,” and I broke them both,” he recalled in a 2017 interview. He said he also broke legs while working on Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and Her Alibi (1989), but, in a career that spanned eight decades, that was the extent of his serious injuries.

Indie distributors are fretting about the current marketplace, specifically a glut of films vying for precious theater space and hard-to-snare audiences who, with exceptions of course, still seems mostly willing to come out for big ticket films.
While there are fewer wide studio releases than pre-Covid, theaters are giving them more space, up to 60%-70% of their real estate, a few indies execs said.
Meanwhile, it’s become cheaper to distribute films, which may be why new firms keep popping up to test the waters and in some cases open their movies on hundreds of screens, perhaps without a commensurate marketing effort.
“There is a lot of stuff being released, but nothing is performing,” says one indie distribution executive. Films like Deadpool or Beetlejuice Beetlejuice work, “but everything else is a crapshoot.
“Whether consumers are going to movies other than the big ones has been the question, and still is.

Here at JoBlo, we love physical media – Especially 4K discs. To a lot of us, the 4K revolution has really given some of our favourite movies new life, with the format allowing us to see pristine versions of classic films that come the closest to presenting them in a way that allows us to experience them the way first run audiences did when they came out. While DVD and Blu-ray were both great for their time, 4K is miraculous, with movies like The Crow looking better in this format than they have since their original theatrical runs. One of the reasons is that the people doing the 4K restorations usually go back to a movie’s negative to make it look as good as it can, and the people restoring these films are passionate (even if some efforts have been controversial).
Yet, some of our favorite movies still aren’t available in 4K.

How would you define “locked in”? Sure, we know it’s a matter of staying focused on the task and letting nothing get in your way. But how would we describe that in movies and TV? What examples would you give? Well, in a recent social media trend, fans are putting their money on some of the biggest names in the history of entertainment.
Last week, X user jayjjalen asked followers to “define ‘locked in’”, resulting in millions of views and thousands of replies. The real catch here is that the “locked in” phase must have been consecutive and uninterrupted. In other words, if there was one slip-up via a box office bomb or creative flop, it doesn’t count – that is, they weren’t truly “locked in.”

Indie filmmaker Azazel Jacobs makes a true New York movie with “His Three Daughters,” his profound and moving drama about a trio of sisters hemorrhaging emotions about their father, who is dying in the next room. Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen deliver career-class performances as Katie, Rachel, and Christina, respectively, who stress over how to write their father’s obituary and how to come together despite years of spite between them. And tensions bubble up in a monologue-driven, theatrical directing style where Jacobs holds on the performances in long takes where other directors might want to cut to a reaction shot or somewhere else.
“I wrote it to a cutting rhythm. I tried to write the script so it would move exactly how I wanted it to film,” Jacobs, who has explored New York stories before, from “French Exit” to “The Lovers” and his breakout, “Momma’s Man,” said in a recent IndieWire interview.

As the Toronto International Film Festival gets underway, The Hollywood Reporter’s critics weigh in on this year’s crop of titles, from biopics to documentaries, sweeping epics to intimate character studies, tear-jerking dramas to laugh-out-loud comedies.

The movie star career of Tom Cruise exists on a multitude unachievable by any who came before him and can never be replicated again even if one tried. Therein lies the audience’s fanatical fascination with Cruise.

Disney's "A Whole New Sound" has been delivering banger after banger leading up to its release and this week fans got to hear We The Kings' reimagining of "Go the Distance" from the animated classic Hercules.
Another rock band from the early 2000s, We The Kings rose to prominence in 2007 with the self-titled album containing the platinum single "Check Yes Juliet." And now they are taking a swing at one of Disney's most inspirational songs.

Tom Cruise, the generational movie star of the postmodern Hollywood era, has been stuck in his good guy reputation for far too long. Unlike some characters who were born to play the hero or the archnemesis, Cruise toes the line between the two just as he keeps his audience increasingly fascinated with an over-the-top show of what he is actually capable of.

In a world where Homelander is a clear villain because he dares to spill blood to preserve the sanctity of his own beliefs, Tom Cruise is a clear hero because he dares to risk his own neck to protect the sanctity of the theatrical experience. And although the comparison may be too far-reaching, the point stands that Cruise is only a modern-day hero whose sole mission in life is to leave behind a legacy that is unparalleled and unquestionable in its own right.

For over 35 years of his acting career, Will Smith has been the quintessential likable character, whether donning a multi-colored silk shirt or a well-tailored suit. Indeed, the actor has racked up chart-topping hits, playing serious historical figures, and seamlessly shifting between action, comedy, and drama.
Remember his charm in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? Or how about box-office juggernauts like Independence Day, Men in Black, and Bad Boys? With each role, he has solidified his place as a Hollywood heavyweight, proving that versatility is his middle name.

But the actor once humorously lamented his failure to be a superstar like Tom Cruise. However, there’s one arena where the former can beat Cruise hands down, and that’s in the art of “rizzology”—a term coined by social media to describe his unparalleled charm. Need proof? Tom Cruise is currently one of the most celebrated action heroes that continues to push boundaries in action filmmaking. Unlike most actors, he doesn’t employ stuntmen for physically challenging action sequences or stunts. His work in The Mission Impossible franchise proved that he is ready to take risks that even stuntmen would think twice before committing to.

Tom Cruise likes to take risks with the stunt sequences in his recent films, but there was a time when he took a big acting risk in a role. Cruise landed the role of Frank T.J. Mackey in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia after approaching the director for a role. He had become a fan of Anderson’s work after watching Boogie Nights.

Anderson sent him the script, which included the character of a motivational speaker and pickup artist. Anderson based the role on the real-life character Ross Jeffries, whom he had only heard about from a secondary source. It turned out that Jeffries was reportedly just a persona created by another man.

This year’s slate of 21 documentaries from 24 countries at the Toronto International Film Festival (September 5 – 15) is a melange of newsy subjects, rising directors, and potential Oscar contenders. Sixteen are sales titles, up from last year’s eight. Two high-profile celebrity docs are playing in the gala section of the fest, R. J. Cutler’s “Elton John: Never Too Late” and Thom Zimmy’s “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.”
The TIFF Documentary Selection will open with “Vice Is Broke,” in which “Huang’s World” journalist Eddie Huang investigates his former employer’s rise and fall into bankruptcy. “It’s an insider’s look at a media company that gave many people opportunities and did things in sloppy ways,” TIFF documentary programmer Thom Powers told IndieWire via Zoom. “It soared up to a value of $5.7 billion and won the attention of moguls like David Zaslav and Rupert Murdoch.

Have you ever witnessed a performance so riveting that it made Tom Cruise’s death-defying stunts in Mission Impossible seem like child’s play?
Before his big-screen legacy was synonymous with high-octane action, the actor, now 62, flexed his dramatic muscles, as evidenced by his transitions from the battlefield in Born on the Fourth of July to the courtroom in A Few Good Men, and from the sports arena in Jerry Maguire to the mysterious allure in Eyes Wide Shut.

Each role, a stepping stone, has cemented him as a chameleon among the stars. But did you know there’s a side of Cruise that outshines even his most iconic spy? His performance in Mission Impossible is, believe it or not, nothing compared to what he did in a deleted scene of Magnolia, wherein he humanizes the enigmatic Frank Tj Mackey with a rawness seldom seen in modern cinema.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Beast (Bertrand Bonello)
Where to begin with Bertrand Bonello’s wonderful The Beast? It’s been so gratifying to see the initial reaction to the French filmmaker’s tenth feature, after several decades of increasingly remarkable work––the majority of it dark, beautiful, and sleazy. In fact, for what a discomforting and despairing experience much of The Beast is, when I’ve thought back its moments of real, uncomplicated cinematic pleasure, its verve and sense of joyousness, are what mark my memories. It’s romantic, without a capital-r. – David K. (full review)

Challengers (Luca Guadagnino)
Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers opens in an intentionally disorienting manner: We are in New Rochelle, New York for a tennis challenger.

Ah, it’s Hollywood—where the big screen becomes a needlepoint of dreams and the Oscars are the golden yardstick of excellence. But it is actually sad when Tom Cruise’s fans clamor for the actor to flex his dramatic chops more often, yet they can’t help but recall how the Academy Awards passed him by to adorn Michael Caine with the honorary statuette.
Cruise, a powerhouse with four Oscar nominations under his belt, for stellar roles in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and the box office juggernaut Top Gun: Maverick, hasn’t yet bagged an Oscar.
Tom Cruise in Magnolia | New Line Cinema
As blockbusters and critical darlings rock through his filmography, it’s quite an Oscar tale to tell—of nominations without culmination. And notably, Cruise’s star turn in Magnolia lost in a twist of Oscar fate to Michael Caine’s performance in The Cider House Rules.

On a humid and muggy evening in New York City’s Soho neighborhood, filmmaker and genre maestro M. Night Shyamalan seems particularly giddy while standing in front of a room of assorted press. A major reason is probably that tonight is also the birthday of his leading man and collaborator, Josh Hartnett. The pair apparently have plans for a nice dinner upstairs. However, he also seems genuinely curious to see what a group of journalists are going to think about his and Hartnett’s latest movie, Trap—a serial killer thriller told from the point-of-view of the killer.
According to Shyamalan, it felt just like the type of movies he and his contemporaries made in the 1990s, although we can attest there has never quite been a serial killer movie like this. Not only is Hartnett’s deceptively affable Cooper a predatory wolf in sheep’s clothing, but he’s...

Tom Cruise, with his amazing plethora of blockbuster movies, has etched his name in Hollywood. But despite having an illustrious cinematic career, the actor has never won an Oscar. Vindication for critics who thought Kevin Costner’s epic “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1″ (Warner Bros.) felt more like a TV drama: It was an immediate #1 on VOD top 10 lists.
The first of a planned four-film series, with the second already completed (and now delayed after the postponement of its August release), it showed poorly in theaters with $28.5 million in U.S./Canada after its fourth weekend. Its rapid transition to home viewing after 18 days (standard for Universal beyond its biggest hits) looks like a smart move: It suggests there is an audience, although perhaps not one eager to watch the 181-minute epic in a theater.
This could help the troubled project gain traction, get it out of the red, and increase interest for “Chapter 2,” wherever/whenever it plays.

For a sitcom with a premise and characters so basic they could be completely summed up in a minute-long (and absurdly catchy) theme song, "Gilligan's Island" was a real bear to get off the ground.
To start off, creator Sherwood Schwartz was in a world of pain while writing the show's pilot (although that had nothing to do with his creative process and everything to do with the 40-something Schwartz -- as 40-something men are wont to do -- overestimating his ability to lift stacks of fresh timber unassisted). Then there were the brutal reactions from his agent and network execs, who practically laughed him out of the building when Schwartz proposed a comedy series about seven people being stranded on the same island, week after week. And then there was the pilot shoot in Hawaii, with the showrunner waking up one morning to find himself surveying what appeared to...

The Criterion Channel’s August lineup pays tribute to auteurs of all kinds: directors, actors, and photographers, fictional or otherwise. In a notable act of preservation and advocacy, they’ll stream 20 titles by the Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine, here introduced by the great Richard Peña. Stanley Kubrick’s final film opened 25 years ago today to largely befuddled disinterest. Even in more recent years its champions (Martin Scorsese most notable among them) seemed quixotic claiming it would someday receive appreciation à la 2001, Barry Lyndon, or The Shining. 25 years hence, Eyes Wide Shut seems nearly incontestable as one of the director’s supreme achievements––something that still feels unresolved and irreconcilable, every viewing the opportunity to glance at incomprehensible horrors among your community and within yourself.
