Originally there were going to be four teams instead of the three that appeared on the show. The fourth team was going to be called the Dabba Doozies and they were going to be captained by the teen-aged Pebbles and Bamm Bamm and some of the members of that team were to have been Touche Turtle, Lippy the Lion, Judy and Elroy Jetson and their dog Astro, Jabberjaw, Magilla Gorilla, Peter Potomus, Top Cat and Tom and Jerry. However, it was felt that with so many other characters, there was no need for a fourth team.
Mumbley and the Dread Baron were added to the Really Rottens to replace Muttley and Dick Dastardly, who were not owned by Hanna-Barbara. Dastardly and Muttley were owned by Heatter-Quigley productions. Fondu may have been a replacement as well.
Jeannie (1973) from the cartoon as well as Alex and Alexandra Cabot and Melody from Josie and the Pussycats (1970) were originally set to appear on the show as members of the Scoobies. In fact, they were even in some of the early promotional ads for the show. However, the character of Jeannie was owned by Columbia Pictures and Alex, Alexandra and Melody were owned by Archie Comics and because of this they were not allowed to be on the show.
While throughout the years Hanna-Barbara made dozens of crossover cartoons with characters from different cartoon series. This is the only time characters from the four most notable Hanna-Barbara franchises ever (Scooby-Doo, The Yogi Bear Show, The Huckleberry Hound Show and The Flintstones) interact with each other.
Snagglepuss and Mildew Wolf, who served as Sideline Reporters/Color Commentators were seen wearing bright yellow colored jackets, similar to those worn by ABC Sports on-air personnel, as ABC broadcast the series.
