Music composer Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, not only as a celebration of his musical prowess, but also in acknowledgment of his role in defining the golden era of Hindi film music.
The octogenarian learnt the basics of music from his father, the renowned trumpeteer of his time, Ramprasad ‘Babaji’ Sharma. He then aced the violin under the guidance of the Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves, whom he went on to immortalise in the song ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’, which was picturised on Amitabh Bachchan (who also contributed to the vocals) in the 1977 film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.
Pyarelal teamed up with Laxmikant Kudalkar and they worked in more than 750 Hindi films between 1963 to 1998. They collaborated with the biggest names of the industry, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra.

"Bhagne ki koshish mat karna. Humne tumhe chaaron taraf se gher liya hai. Bhalai isi mein hai ke tum apne aap ko kanoon ke hawaale kar do," or its near variants, became the template for the denouement of scores of action Hindi films from the 1950s to the 1980s, as a pistol-toting Iftekhar, usually accompanied by a squad of policemen, reached the spot to rescue the hero and heroine and/or round up the villains.
While his near-contemporary Jagdish Raj (Khurana) holds the record of maximum outings as a police officer in Hindi films (144), Iftekhar was not far behind with 75-odd such roles, playing an Inspector/Dsp/Sp/Commissioner in top films like "Ab Dilli Dur Nahin" (1957), "Guide" (1965), "Teesri Manzil" (1966), "Do Dooni Char" (1968), "Ittefaq" (1969), "Johny Mera Naam" (1970), "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" (1971), "Zanjeer" (1973), "Majboor" (1974), "Fakira" (1976), "Don" (1978) and "Krodhi" (1981), among others.

While it is known that everyone has a time, nothing prepares us for losing those who are family and those who we have come to admire. While he may have been a bigger name even before I was born the name of Rishi Kapoor was an inheritance from my parents, who they themselves grew up in cinema halls watching his films and passing those memories onto me by showing me those films in whatever the technology of the time. For me, Rishi Kapoor was not the first dancing star, but he was the first to make it important for the hero to be able to dance.

She made him jive bare-torsoed to the sound of 'Dard-e-Disco' in Om Shanti Om. Shah Rukh will dance like never before for and in Farah Khan's Happy New Year. And not just him, the entire cast will be dancing for a major part of the film.
According to a source close to the project, as per the script the cast has to dance for a stage show while pulling off a daring heist.
"So it's basically a dance and action script where all the protagonists have to look convincing as professional dancers on stage. Shah Rukh has never danced so much before," says the source.
Apparently, the dance competition that forms the narrative's grand finale stretches into a good 20 minutes.
"All the main players Shah Rukh, Deepika, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah and Boman Irani would be seen on stage dancing for a long stretch. Shah Rukh will...

Once upon a time there lived a showman. He delivered films on larger than life canvases with heroic characters, melodramatic situations, grandiose dialogues and soul stirring music. We fondly recall the man who gave us iconic films like Karz, Ram-Lakhan, Saudagar, Pardes and many more! Sadly the showman never quite understood the evolution that happened to Indian cinema. He struggled to appeal to the changing tastes, the new generation’s demands and new age storytelling that Indian cinema had adopted. Today he continues to force the audiences to re-visit the style of cinema that once landed him with blockbusters however time and time again he gets rejected. Last Friday he tried again. And sadly last Friday, he failed again.

If it was Subhash Ghai who made Rishi Kapoor an iconic romantic hero in Karz, trust him to shatter that image in his latest film, Kaanchi. Rishi is swinging away with a bevy of beautiful girls in this song, titled Thumka. The versatile artist Sonu Nigam and Suzanne D’mello have sung the peppy song.

After working together in Karz in 1980, Rishi Kapoor and Subhash Ghai have come together again for Kaanchi which releases next month.
When asked why it took 33 years to work with Subhash Ghai, Kapoor said, “Only Subhash would be able to tell. I was 27 when he shot the Om Shanti Om song with me for Karz. Today I’m 61, and he’s shooting a song in Kaanchi with me, which seems to have the same energy.”
Rishi Kapoor plays a negative role, styled on Vijay Mallya in Kaanchi. “It’s a negative character. The kind of over-the-top character that Subhash Ghai creates. It is inspired by Vijay Mallya; it’s been styled on him. But it’s not the story of his life,” says Kapoor.
Subhash Ghai says about Rishi Kapoor, “He will play a khalnaayak in my film. While he’s always been the romantic lover boy, lately, Rishi has discovered his mean bone.

In celebration of Lord Shiva’s Maha Shivratri, one of the most prominent festivals of the Hindu calendar, we bring you some of our favourite Lord Shiva related Bollywood songs.
As we explore a few of the different shades that Bollywood has celebrated Lord Shiva through, we take you on a very quick journey beginning in 1950, with the song “Bhole nath se nirala” to end with Koyla’s (1997) mischievous “Bhang Ke Nashe Mein”.
Known by at least 1008 different names, including “Kailas” (One who bestows Peace), “Shambu” (Source of everything) and “Hari” (Sustainer and Destroyer), Lord Shiva is said to have married Parvarti on Maha Shivratri. Other readings of Hinduism state that Maha Shivratri is the night on which Shiva performed “Tandava” – the dance that led to the creation, conservation and destruction of the Universe.

Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai had made inroads in the music industry way back when he launched his film Kisna's music under his banner Mukta Music. Apparently, Ghai, who is known for his film's music, is all set to re- launch his music label with his next directorial venture Kaanchi.
Mukta Music after successfully backing the music distribution of films like Kisna, Jogger's Park and Iqbal went silent and is now geared up to create a stir in the music market again. "My film's music has always been a hit. Our films - Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak, Taal and Yaadein had very successful music. People told me long ago, when I first got into production, that I should launch a music arm for my company. But my focus was different then," said Ghai.
He further added, "The music industry has evolved a great deal since the '70s and '80s.

Music from Mukta films i.e Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak, Taal and Yaadein has always topped the charts. Mukta Music was launched in partnership with Sony music for kisna after Ghai realized that music was a valuable aspect of the film and it had to be exploited to the fullest.
But Kisna didn’t do as expected and Ghai didn’t want to take risk on his next hence when T-series offered a good price for his next big budget film Yuvvraj he was happy to de-risk it.
Ghai plans to relaunch the label with his maiden venture Kaanchi which is a big musical thriller by going all out by ramping up the distribution, exhibition and production business a great deal. Rishi Kapoor has become a leading face of character driven roles that have negative shades. It started with the menacing Rauf Lala in Agneepath, led to the role of a gangster in D-day and now he plays the role of a flamboyant business tycoon who is the villain in Subhash Ghai’s next film, Kaanchi.
Subhash Ghai and Rishi Kapoor have come together after a span of 32 years. Their first film together was Karz. Even though Karz did not do well at the box office, it’s now considered a cult film.
Kaanchi will see Rishi Kapoor play a businessman who likes the 3 Gs – Girls, Guns, Guitar.
Subhash Ghai says “We are having so much fun on the sets shooting with Rishi Kapoor and it is a pleasure to work with one of the best actors in the industry. I am sure the audience is going to love his look and character in the film.

Subhash Ghai has a tradition of building memorable characters on screen, from Ajit in Kalicharan to Anupam Kher in Karma to Simi Garewal in Karz. This stems from one of the core beliefs of Subhash Ghai, which is every character is important and no role is big or small.
One of the main reasons for the success of the characters in Subhash Ghai films is the excellent casting. “Saara shehar mujhe Lion ke naam se jaanta hai” is a line that one cannot imagine coming anyone else but Ajit . “Is thappad ki goonj suni tumne?” has been immortalized by Anupam Kher and has been repeated every time there has been a slap. Gulshan Grover who was an upcoming actor saw his career’s breakthrough performance as Kesariya Vilayati in Ram Lakhan and came to be known as the “Bad Man” in Bollywood after his lines from the film.

Ranbir Kapoor who will be seen playing a thief in his upcoming film Besharam, will also be seen sporting a retro style. Apparently, Ranbir will draw inspiration from Rishi Kapoor's song 'Om Shanti Om' from Karz for a song in his film which will be choreographed by Remo D'Souza. While Abhinav does agree that the resemblance between the two looks is uncanny, he assures that this wasn't planned and that it was just a mere coincidence. Besharam stars Ranbir and his parents Rishi - Neetu Kapoor along with Pallavi Sharda and is directed by Abhinav Kashyap. The film is set to release on October 2.

Mumbai, April 9: Given the fact that Subhash Ghai had last directed Rishi Kapoor in the role of a pop star for "Karz" 32 years ago, it was tough for the filmmaker to direct the veteran actor in the role of a villain in his upcoming film "Kaanchi".
Ghai has been busy shooting for "Kaanchi" these days, and he recently shot a scene with Rishi.
"It was a crazy experience for me to work with Rishi Kapoor after 32 years. It was tough to make him a powerful and interesting villain after presenting him as a pop star in 'Karz'. In 'Kaanchi', he plays a business tycoon with guns, girls and guitars around him. It was fun," said Ghai.
Rishi even played the trademark "Karz" tune on the guitar for "Kaanchi",.

“To be in love with the idea of being in love” goes a famous quote. Bollywood cinema has only made the concept of this ‘love’ and ‘romance’ a lot more extravagant in its various character relationships and stories. Subhash Ghai, the Showman as he is fondly called, has brought together onscreen couples, who have romanticized this everlasting emotional state of being even more in his films.
From the earliest onscreen jodi’s of Shatrugan Sinha and Reena Roy, Rishi Kapoor and Tina Munim, Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Shehsadri to Shahrukh Khan and Mahima Chaudhary, Subhash Ghai has always been fascinated with love and delivered it to the hilt in the stories of these classic films spanning 30 years. The masses have connected to the emotions portrayed in movies like Karz, Hero, Karma, Ram Lakhan, Pardes and should expect the same from his new upcoming projects.

Yes, you read right – Sonakshi was indeed inspired by yesteryear actresses, Sridevi and Parveen Babi for her latest appearance in the song ‘Thank God It’s Friday’ for Ajay Devgn and South’s Tamannaah (Bhatia)’s remake of 80’s hit Himmatwala.
