As confirmed by Deadline, Richard Roundtree, the groundbreaking star of the original "Shaft" franchise has died as a result of pancreatic cancer. He was 81. Roundtree was a gifted athlete who played for New Rochelle High School's nationally-ranked and undefeated football team but later dropped out of college after he was scouted by Ebony Fashion Fair founder Eunice W. Johnson and began modeling for companies like Duke hair products and Salem cigarettes. A few years later, he joined the Negro Ensemble Company theater group in New York City, where he became a fast leading man. This led to a successful career in front of the camera, where Roundtree would become colloquially known as the "first Black action hero."
He appeared in a number of Blaxploitation films in the 1970s, but he became a cinematic icon as detective John Shaft in the films "Shaft," "Shaft's Big Score!," "Shaft in Africa," and the short-lived series adaptation.

So many movies intended for the big screen are having to forgo it these days, it seems odd when something as apt for home viewing as “Half Brothers” makes the Covid-defying move of opening on 1,200-plus American screens. Those looking for undemanding entertainment may give it a passing grade, but or the collective viewing experience. Nor does writer-producer Eduardo Cisernos’ concept add much to culture-clash politics beyond contrivance and reinforced stereotypes. It’s a slick film that’s forgettable at best, annoyingly broad and unfunny at worst.
A 1994 prologue has engineer Flavio (Juan Pablo Espinosa) enjoying a close, playful relationship with only child Renato (Ian Inigo) in their native San Miguel de Allende. But a steep economic downturn forces dad to leave his wife (Bianca Marroquin) and son behind in order to seek work up north, along with many others. While he promises he’ll soon return, that promise is broken.

Movie posters are an important advertising element for a film. But what happens when they don't do such a great job in promoting their film?
Movie posters are supposed to be the first and most prominent promotional tool of a film. Many times movie posters may be the first official material released for a film production as well as the first opportunity that the film has to reach its potential audience. That makes them very important. Like trailers, they are meant to capture your attention. Unlike trailers, they are not supposed to give too much away. There are various techniques that have been used over the years to accomplish this task including bright colors, eye-catching fonts, and the prominent inclusion of big name stars’ faces. Graphic design as well as a general nod to the production design of the film are important components for every movie poster. Before the advent of computers,...

Dancing With the Stars better secure the rights to Haddaway's "What Is Love" for new contestant Chris Kattan. E! Chris Kattan has been officially charged with driving under the influence of drugs following his arrest on February 10, with the maximum penalty for the first offense of DUI being six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, plus penalty assessments.
Earlier this month, Kattan, 43, reportedly crashed his car into a Department of Transportation maintenance truck on the 101 Freeway that was parked on the shoulder for maintenance work around 2 a.m., CBS Los Angeles reports.

The California Highway Patrol report also said that a woman had apparently called 911 to report that the comedian's Mercedes was "weaving all over the roadway at slow speeds."
Kattan was reportedly not injured in the crash, and was able to exit his car.
According to the Chp, he appeared to be impaired and was then taken into custody for driving under the influence and booked at Van Nuys Jail.

He cracked fans up as a wannabe party animal in “A Night at the Roxbury,” and now Chris Kattan may have taken things too far in real life.
The “Corky Romano” actor was arrested in Los Angeles early this morning (February 10) after he crashed into another vehicle while.
According to the Lapd, neither Kattan’s car nor the other ride was damaged, but Chris was in fact arrested for driving under the influence of prescription medication.
A concerned citizen called 911 after observing that Kattan’s Mercedes Benz was “weaving all over the 101 Freeway at slow speeds” around 2am.

Rounding out a long day of promotions for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 yesterday, Robert Pattinson visited Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and got wet. Soaked, even. Yep, Pattinson went on the show to discuss a few things about his life - like the fact that he unknowingly dissed country superstar Brad Paisley in Nashville recently and he peed his pants watching Corky Romano - and the movie before playing a little game of "Water War." View slideshow: 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2' Kristen Stewart, who'd appeared on the show the night before, was challenged to a harmless game of giant quarters, but Pattinson's game involved a simple deck of cards, a few cups of water and one giant super soaker water gun. Honestly, do you even need us to write words here? Probably, we should just shut up and let you watch Robert Pattinson get drenched, even as he wins his Water War game with Jimmy Fallon on Late Night. But maybe after you enjoy the above clip a few times, you will also want to entertain yourself with the many funny things we learned from his appearance on the show. Things such as the fact that Rob is a Corky Romano superfan.
“I love that movie; I would say that’s one of my top five favorite movies,” he said of the Chris Kattan comedy. “That’s the only time I’ve ever genuinely peed my pants … from watching a movie.”
And while Fallon and the rest of us recognize Rob as a really funny guy, he said that if he ever did a comedy, he’d like a little help.

In the business of older white male character actors getting jobs, we’ve got two this afternoon. First up, with production beginning on the drama thriller Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Keith Carradine has been added to the impressive ensemble already including Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster and Nate Parker.
Newcomer David Lowery will make his debut here, in the tale of an escaped convict in the ’70s named Bob Muldoon (Affleck) who must confront a dark past in order to reunite with his wife (Mara) and daughter. There’s no news on who Carradine will play, but the actor is always a welcome addition. Here’s hoping that Lowery can succeed off the bat, as he’s surely already got the cast to back him up.
We’ve also got news from Variety that Fred Ward has joined the ensemble of the actioner 2 Guns, set to be directed by Contraband‘s Baltasar Kormákur,...

Kristen Wiig made her final regular appearance on Saturday Night Live last week with a moving send-off that was grander and more heartfelt than the sketch show has given a cast member in quite some time. With half a dozen film projects in the works, Wiig is poised to launch into a long, successful career on the A-list. But then again so was David Spade, Jimmy Fallon, and Tina Fey. While those SNL vets have all flourished in television, Wiig has made no move toward the small screen, and it’s harder to become a bankable star on the level of Will Ferrell,...

Us actor whose success as the scruffy TV detective Columbo was complemented by a wide range of stage and screen roles
Show-business history records that the American actor Peter Falk, who has died aged 83, made his stage debut the year before he left high school, presciently cast as a detective. Despite the 17-year-old's fleeting success, he had no thoughts of pursuing acting as a career – if only because tough kids from the Bronx considered it an unsuitable job for a man. Just 24 years later, Falk made his first television appearance as the scruffy detective, Columbo, not only becoming the highest paid actor on television – commanding $500,000 an episode during the 1970s – but also the most famous.
Inevitably the lieutenant dedicated to unravelling the villainy of the wealthy and glamorous dominated his career, although – unlike some actors – he escaped the straitjacket, or in his case shabby raincoat, of typecasting. In addition to stage work,...

Well, maybe it’s not the board game… but Liam Neeson has signed on to play the role of Admiral Shane in Universal Pictures new film Battleship. Also joining the cast will be Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights), Brooklyn Decker (Ugly Betty), Rihanna, and Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood). I don’t know how I feel about this mash up, but my fingers are crossed!
The premise of the film is that the planet is up against some sort of powerful force and Admiral Shane and his crew are out to win the battle. (Simple enough, right?) Directed by Peter Berg (Hancock, Smoking Aces, Corky Romano), it is scheduled to come out on May 18th, 2012.

The fun part about watching Kevin Smith's hockey tweets is that that he's actually a fan of the sport in general, as opposed to just the New Jersey Devils. Jeremy Piven and Dave Coulier, meanwhile were a little more explicit with their praise last night when the Chicago Blackhawks took home the Stanley Cup.

Some country music performers took home some accolades last night, too, over at the Cmt Music Awards. David Spade and Snooki saw some friends while they were there from the looks of their tweets. Hip-hop and jazz innovator Guru, who was best known as half of the duo Gang Starr, shocked a noticeable contingent in Twitter-Wood today as news of his death at the age of 43 traveled around. Ice-t, Andy Milonakis and Mark Webber were among those posting condolences.
Kevin Spacey had some good fortune to tweet about though. Apparently he's been waiting out travel delays over the last week caused by the volcano in Iceland, but finally got mobile again. You can check out what he had to say after the jump along with how "Toy Story 3" won't be like the next iPhone and what Chris Kattan thinks Al-Qaeda's favorite movie is in Twitter-Wood for April 20th, 2010.

The passing of former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren saddened some Twitter-Wood posts today, and Edgar Wright was among those thinking about a proper tribute to him. Elsewhere, David Lynch called out one of his own life's accomplishments, pointing out the 20th anniversary of "Twin Peaks" premiering on TV.
Lloyd Kaufman, meanwhile, stepped up in defense of a remake of one of his classics, "The Toxic Avenger," which is being backed by Akiva Goldsman. You can find those retweets after the jump along with John Cusack's fighting words for Internet trolls and Chris Kattan's thoughts on Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy's breakup in Twitter-Wood for April 8th, 2010.

Some of the "Hot Tube Time Machine" cast members want to see it trending more often on Twitter, while others, like Rob Corddry, just want to see rank in some more dough -- though I think he may be joking about his expectations. Nevertheless, however well the show does this weekend, they do appear to have sold a ticket to Damon Lindelof.
The recent burst of spring weather has prompted plenty outdoor activities in Twitter-Wood as well. A great movie poster can, clearly, really help sell a movie. But there's still a list of things that should never, ever find their way to the final version...
The art of the movie poster is a delicate one. Get the right poster, and you bring in the casual moviegoer, catch the eye and even get people wanting to buy it and put it on their walls. Get it wrong, and it can cost you hard cash at the box office.
For, whether you like it or not, the poster is the key deciding factor for many cinemagoers when choosing what to see at their local multiplex. And it got us thinking: what are the things that people put on their posters that serve no logical purpose whatsoever? What are, frankly, the most redundant things your poster can say?
Here are our top 10 choices..

Stag Night
Stars: Kip Pardue, Breckin Meyer, Scott Adkins, Vinessa Shaw | Written and Directed by Peter A. Dowling
Three New Yorkers out on a stag night hit on a couple of girls on the subway. When one gets too forceful he gets pepper-sprayed and in the ensuing confusion, they all accidentally get off at the wrong station – an abandoned stop that’s been closed since the 1970s. Stranded, they make their way down the subway tunnel to find an exit – and witness a clan of primitive subway dwellers brutally killing a train guard. Spotted, the party try everything to escape to the world above, all the while being hunted by whatever ‘they’ are…
Stag Night is the directorial debut of writer Peter A. Dowling, the writer behind 2005’s Jodie Foster flick Flightplan. If you’ve ever seen the classic Donald Pleasance movie Deathline, or Chris Smith’s more recent Creep,...

Mystery Team Directed by Dan Eckman After Derrick Comedy won America's heart a few years back with their breakout youtube sensation, Bro Rape: A Newsline Investigative Report [1], the troupe could have easily faded into obscurity. They didn't, as fans of funny online videos can attest, and instead they convinced somebody to bankroll a film in which they star as emotionally stunted teenagers solving playground mysteries. And they made it funny. Derrick Comedy, if you're unfamiliar, is far from a one-hit wonder: since Bro Rape, the group has amassed an impressive catalog of absurd, violently impolitic youtubes that have a tendency to get passed around the internet. Much can be debated about the quality or tastefullness of these sketches, but it stands as fact that Derrick can execute a very, very silly idea with admirable dedication--for a quick reference, see apparent fan favorite (13 million views!) Blowjob Girl [2]. With Mystery Team, the...

It doesn't happen every day, but this week, you can see Chris Kattan doing something a little different. Known as one of the goofier Saturday Night Live alums, his gigs don't stretch much farther than head-swinging nights at the Roxbury and stints as Corky Romano. But now he's getting slightly more serious for IFC. See, Kattan's starring in a 3-part miniseries called Bollywood Hero, which kicks off on the 6th. He plays a fictionalized version of himself, sick of being skipped over for leading man gigs, so he heads to Bollywood to get a starring role in a film called Peculiar Dancing Boy. Sounds apt. There is, of course, comedy, but not the sort we're used to when Kattan's name popped up.
Speaking with the Fresno Bee, Kattan said: "The part about the heroic film lead is not true. I did want to be Indiana Jones when I was young.

Little is known about Bollywood -- India's counterpart to Hollywood -- by the vast majority of Americans. But Belisa Balaban and Ted Skillman, the executive producers behind IFC's "Bollywood Hero" three-night musical miniseries that debuts at 10 p.m. on August 6, are betting on the goodwill generated by best picture winner "Slumdog Millionaire" will intrigue viewers.
"There's an assumption amongst TV buyers, primarily, that Americans aren't interested in shows that take place outside of the States," Skillman says. "We've always wanted to tell stories that are more outward looking, that focus more on the world. And Bollywood, in particular, was interesting to us because it's simultaneously exotic and outward looking and yet has kind of a familiarity to it."
With this notion in mind, Balaban and Skillman came up with "Bollywood Hero," the journey of an actor who is having difficulty landing a lead "heroic" role in Hollywood. After being offered...

They make us laugh. They make us cry. Okay, maybe not so much. But they sure make us laugh. In honor of Judd Apatow’s latest film about stand-up comedians, we felt it was time to come up with our top 10 list of comedians turned actors. Some of them have found more success in one area over the other. Others have done a fine job walking the line between the two. Regardless of how the success is dispersed, each individual on this list has reached it at some point in their career.
10. Chris Farley
One of the most successful SNL stars to branch out into the film world, Chris Farley is a legend in the comedy world. Imagine if he had survived longer than his 33 years. One of the most iconic images in the last 20 years of SNL is Farley dressed as a Chippendale’s dancer along with Patrick Swayze.

DreamWorks does it 'One More Time' for Black comedy
In a pre-emptive buy, DreamWorks Pictures has paid mid-six figures for the comedy pitch Do That to Me One More Time from writing team David Garrett and Jason Ward with Jack Black attached to star as well as produce along with Bob Simonds. The project reteams Black with DreamWorks after the actor recently wrapped a starring role opposite Ben Stiller in the studio's comedy Envy. Garrett and Ward, who penned the 2001 Chris Kattan starrer Corky Romano for Simonds, will now pen the screenplay, about a Sonny and Cher-style couple who hate each other and have a War of the Roses-type relationship.
