Jackie Chan taking the mic and performing a rendition of Elvis Presley’s hit song Can’t Help Falling in Love was something the studio audiences of Howie Mandel never imagined. Most interestingly, he didn’t fumble words while singing as he did with his lines in the English language films. Even years after this soulful rendition, fans keep discovering Chan’s secret talent.

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

20 years ago today, Teddy Chan’s The Accidental Spy hit theaters. Within star Jackie Chan’s illustrious filmography, the film is usually considered a minor entry, but it’s momentous for an entirely different reason: it marks the film debut of English martial artist and actor Scott Adkins. Although Adkins’ role is of the in-the-background, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it variety, this early instance of getting-one’s-foot-in-the-door proved to be historic, as it kicked off the film career of one of contemporary cinema’s greatest screen fighters. In the years immediately following this debut, the actor slowly but surely worked his way into the spotlight, demonstrating his physical prowess on the sidelines until his role...

Like so many 2020 films, Double World was slated for a major theatrical release this summer. But due to the pandemic, it has become one of the first big films to jump online in some hopes of recouping its costs. It’s a shame because Double World is the kind of film that was made for the big screen. It opens a spectacular new fantasy world, brimming with ravishing visuals. Haven’t heard of it? Don’t feel bad. It’s from China. Had 2020 gone as planned, Double World might have had a limited North American theatrical release at best, but now we can see it on Netflix.
Double World is based on a popular Mmorpg called Zhengtu, which is the movie’s original title in Chinese. Zhengtu means ‘way to conquer’. China’s massive population has the world’s largest online gaming community and Zhengtu is one of China’s top five online games,...

"Nobody spoke about the war. So I didn't either." Kino Lorber has unveiled the official trailer for an indie documentary titled Chichinette: The Accidental Spy, made by German doc filmmaker/cinematographer Nicolas Hens. She tells the story of how Marthe Cohn, a 99 year old Jewish woman born in France, became a spy in Nazi Germany. For decades after the war ended she never spoke about the experience, but now she travels the globe to share her story as "The Accidental Spy". This truly seems like a remarkably fascinating story, not your usual war story, with a few good insight about life and survival and everything else in France. She almost seems as spunky and outspoken as the late Agnes Varda. Another new doc that is worth a watch. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Nicola Hens' doc Chichinette: The Accidental Spy, on YouTube: Marthe Cohn, a 99 year old Jewish woman born in France,...
