This television package includes every sound Hal Roach-produced Our Gang comedy, except for Big Ears (1931), which was censored for sensitive subject matter (divorce), and the following shorts, which were all censored for sensitive racial content/ subject matter: Lazy Days (1929) Moan & Groan, Inc. (1929) A Tough Winter (1930) Little Daddy (1931) A Lad an' a Lamp (1932) The Kid from Borneo (1933) Numerous other shorts in the series, while added to this broadcast package, were edited down to up to half of their original length for content.
These shorts did not get called LITTLE RASCALS until they were packaged for syndication and show on TV; starting in 1955. Before that they were called Hal Roaches' Our Gang.
The shorts from the 1920s were sold to television under the names "Those Lovable Scallawags With Their Gang" and "Mischief Makers".
"Our Gang" in the 1950's TV series "The Little Rascals" originated from the series "Hal Roach's Rascals" of 1929-1931.
When Hal Roach sold the series to MGM in 1938 he also sold rights to the name Our Gang. In 1950 Hal Roach bought back the Our Gang films that he produced but MGM would not sell back the name Our Gang as they had produced their own Our Gang shorts in the 1940's. For their 1950 theatrical re-issue and their 1955 Television Syndication, Hal Roach referred back to his original title card credit "Hal Roach Presents His Rascals in..." and re-christened the series "THE LITTLE RASCALS". In the 1940's some sound shorts were sold for home use by ERKO Films under the auspicious name "Kids 'N Pets Series", likely not authorized. "Hook and Ladder" is the most common title found in this series, but strangely the end gag is missing. For the Home Movie Market release in 1950 by Official Films, Hal Roach didn't want to confuse those prints with their theatrical run and had the series called "Famous Kids" for the home market. Fortunately when Blackhawk films got the rights to sell Home Movie prints in the late 1960's they also got the rights to use their new name "THE LITTLE RASCALS".
