During a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, the “Mother” singer was asked what he thought of Elvis’ ’68 Comeback Special. “I remember watching it as a kid and thinking, ‘Wow. This is pretty cool,'” he recalled. “He basically hadn’t done any live performing.

“He came back from the Army and was just doing movies,” he said. “Then all this stuff was happening like the British Invasion and the Mod thing and hippies. I think he was like, ‘Where’s my place?’ So he went, ‘I’m Elvis. This is my place.

In a fascinating example of one classic rock star paying tribute to another, Bono of U2 once wrote an essay about Elvis Presley’s greatness and influence. In that essay, he said watching Elvis’ ’68 Comeback Special when he was a child was an incredible experience. The U2 star would later cite one of the King of Rock’ n’ Roll’s songs as having a huge impact on him.

It's hard to believe it's been nearly 50 years since Elvis Presley's live television performance of the "68 Comeback Special," and this summer, fans will get an inside look at the iconic event in theaters across the country. The special will screen in more than 500 movie theaters on both Aug. 16 and Aug. 20, but that's not all: It will also include an exclusive look at the making of the television special and even more new content about Elvis's influence.

"The '68 Comeback Special' embodies the spirit and talent of one of the most legendary artists in music history," Steve Binder, director and producer of the special, said in a press release. "I hope that Elvis fans and music lovers everywhere will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of the King through a unique yet personal lens captured in this content."
