We have a look at some of the more obscure comic book movie ideas which nearly made it to the big screen…
We've recently been investigating the pile of nearly-made-its in the ever-growing world of cinematic comic book adaptations. You could be forgiven for thinking Hollywood will strap wads of cash to any old comic book writer who stumbles past their door, but so far we’ve written approximately 5,000 words that say otherwise.
First, we delved into DC’s chequered past and found heaps of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman projects that we’ll sadly never get to see (and some other projects we’re quite glad we’ll never have to sit through). We then did the same for Marvel, unearthing plans for a Paul McCartney Silver Surfer rock opera, James Cameron’s bizarre Spider-Man script ideas and an amazingly-cast Dazzler animation from the 1980s.

A True Story of True American Grit
The incredible true story of the roughly 554 fighting men of the United States 77th Division who were lost in the Argonne Forest and held off overwhelming German forces in October 1918 was so inspirational that it inspired one of the first movies about Wwi, the 1919 movie The Lost Battalion. Tonight's MovieMovie is Highlander director Russell MulCahy's 2001 remake of the movie which, while it can't boast a cast that includes several of the actual soldiers from the 77th like the first movie, is a historically accurate depiction of the event that includes intense action, a solid cast and Emmy-nominated sound, sound editing and picture editing. Rick Schroder stars as Maj. Charles W. Whittlesey, the real-life Medal of Honor recipient who held the line against the German army. Michael Brandon (The Red Badge of Courage) and Jamie Harris (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) also star.

The comics community saw an outpouring of condolences today as news broke that fantasy illustrator and painter Jeffrey Catherine Jones passed away at the age of 67. Billy Tucci, Jock, J.M. DeMatteis and Ron Marz were among those tweeting about her legacy, and there are scores of similar posts where those came from.
In lighter thoughts, Edgar Wright caught "Bridesmaids," and he had good things to say about both the film and Kristen Wiig. With any luck, the rumored upcoming Rapture will hold off long enough that they can eventually work together. Some speculators have pegged the event for Saturday. Brian Lynch, meanwhile, thinks it will inspire a new mega-crossover.

David Gerber, a seminal figure in American and international television for a half-century as a producer, studio executive, industry statesman and philanthropist, died Saturday at Los Angeles County-usc Medical Center. He was 86.
Gerber earned an Emmy (and six other Emmy noms), a Golden Globe, a Peabody award and a Christopher award -- not to mention honors from the American Film Institute, the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors and others -- by taking on serious, often controversial subjects.
He was a pioneer of multiracial programming and an industry innovator with such series as "Police Woman," "Batman," "Room 222," "thirtysomething," "In the Heat of the Night," "Medical Story" and dozens of TV movies, including his last longform effort, the critically acclaimed "Flight 93" in 2006.
His miniseries included "George Washington," winner of a Peabody award; "The Lindberg Kidnapping Case"; "Nothing Lasts Forever"; and "Beulah Land."

I had heard that the Horatio Hornblower films and the Shackleton mini-series were great and now I’ll get to check it out for myself. This neatly packaged (it looks like a book) 14 DVD set brings together the entirety of those two programs along with The Lost Battalion, Benedict Arnold A Question of Honor, Napoleon, The Duel, The Fire Ships, Longitude, The Wrong War, The Duchess and The Devil. As historical dramatizations go you don’t do much better than A&E. They tend to avoid sappy presentations in favor of genuine drama and character development and historical accuracy. And the stable of actors they’ve used (John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons, Isabella Rossellini, Gerard Depardieu etc.) are more than up to the task of keeping things from getting too melodramatic. The extras alone here would be worth another whole box set. I won’t list them here because I’m...
