Lynda Obst and Paula Weinstein will posthumously receive the Producers Guild of America’s (PGA) Trailblazer Award at the Guild’s 2025 ceremony next month.

The Producers Guild of America will posthumously honor late producers Lynda Obst and Paula Weinstein with the Trailblazer Award, the guild announced on Friday. Their tributes will take place at the Producers Guild Awards, to be held Feb. 8 in Los Angeles.

Obst and Weinstein, who both died in 2024, will receive the awards for “their shared commitment to paving the way for female producers and championing women’s voices in Hollywood.”

“Lynda Obst and Paula Weinstein have made a lasting impact on the industry with their trailblazing work and steadfast commitment to amplifying women’s voices,” Producers Guild of America presidents Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line said in a statement.

“Lynda and Paula embody the spirit of women who have broken barriers and paved the way for future generations of producers. Their visionary work includes iconic films that have defined eras, alongside their unwavering commitment to championing underrepresented stories,” they continued.

Weinstein, who died March 25, won a pair of Emmys for the HBO telefilms Too Big to Fail and Truman and nominated for Recount and Citizen Cohn. She also worked on films including The Perfect Storm, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Analyze This and its sequel Analyze That.

But a mob boss who suffers from panic attacks?

A don who's forced to contend with the usual headaches of fatherhood and suburbia?

A protagonist who operates out of a strip club and has no qualms about snuffing out inconvenient colleagues with the old extension cord around the throat?

Sure, the ironic juxtaposition of the two worlds -- the mundane and the murderous, the humdrum and the homicidal -- sounds like a great idea for a 90-minute comedy.

Paula Weinstein, the veteran studio executive, two-time Emmy winner and producer on such projects as The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Perfect Storm, Analyze This and Grace and Frankie, died Monday. She was 78.

Weinstein died at her home in New York, her daughter, Hannah Rosenberg, told The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death was revealed.

“The world is a lesser place without my mother,” Rosenberg said in a statement. “She was a masterful producer and a force of nature for the things she believed in, including the many projects that spanned her illustrious career, the stories she fought to tell and the social justice causes she championed.”

In September, Weinstein exited Tribeca Enterprises, which she joined as executive vp in 2013, to work on political campaigns. She earlier was a vp at Warner Bros., an executive vp at 20th Century Fox and president of United Artists.

Netflix's new chart of top English-language movies lists Crossroads at No. 10 with 3.7 million viewers. The 2002 Britney Spears movie is poorly reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie's newfound popularity may be due to it being prominently featured in Spears' memoir.

Crossroads has become a global streaming hit. The 2002 coming-of-age dramedy starred Britney Spears opposite a star-studded ensemble cast that included Zoe Saldaña, Taryn Manning, Anson Mount, Kim Cattrall, and Dan Aykroyd. It was not well-received critically and at the time of writing holds a 15% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a similarly rotten 40% score from audiences.

Exclusive: Another show is pausing production until the WGA strike is over. This time it’s Before, the Apple TV+ limited series headlined by Billy Crystal, which hails from Paramount Television Studios.

The show (aka Winston), which has been filming in New Jersey, was temporarily shut down by picketing, including on June 1, per a tweet by Wgae vp Lisa Takeuchi Cullen (you can see it below). The series is believed to have completed about five episodes.

In Before, Crystal plays Eli, a child psychiatrist who recently lost his wife when he encounters a troubled young boy. Pat Cooper, an acerbic stand-up comedian who later had a career acting in films and TV series including Analyze This, Seinfeld and the original Charlie’s Angels and was a favorite of Howard Stern, died Tuesday at his home in Las Vegas. He was 93.

His wife, Emily Connor, announced the news.

Born Pasquale Caputo on July 31, 1929, in Brooklyn, he tried to join multiple branches of the U.S. Armed Forces but was rejected and turned to comedy. He adopted his stage name during an early-’60s stint doing stand-up, which further angered the Italian family he often roasted in his act.

Cooper became estranged from his parents while focusing on his insult-heavy comedy career. His angry onstage persona led to multiple firings from stints opening for the likes of Frank Sinatra and Paul Anka. By the mid-’60s, he was being booked on many of the era’s most popular variety...

Pat Cooper, the famously fast-talking and angry stand-up comedian who often appeared on Ed Sullivan and Howard Stern’s shows, died Tuesday in Las Vegas. He was 93.

Cooper appeared on “Seinfeld” in the Friars Club episode, playing himself. He also appeared with Robert DeNiro in the 1999 film “Analyze This” as Salvatore Masiello and reprised his role in “Analyze That.”

He was a frequent guest host on the Mike Douglas Show in the 1970s, and appeared many times on the Howard Stern show throughout the 1990s and 2000s, where he was known for his cranky persona.

Pat Cooper, the brash Italian-American stand-up from Brooklyn whose anger real and imagined provided fuel for a long career in comedy, has died. He was 93.

Cooper died Tuesday night at his home in Las Vegas, his wife, Emily Conner, announced.

A mainstay in nightclubs from Atlantic City to Las Vegas, Cooper opened for Ginger Rogers at the Desert Inn and Frank Sinatra at the Sands. He said he once refused to take out a joke about an upside-down St. Anthony statue that Sinatra wanted excised and never worked with the singer again.

Also known for his nonstop, rapid-fire delivery, Cooper appeared as himself on the 1996 Seinfeld episode “The Friars Club” — he participated in many a roast at that famed comedic establishment in midtown Manhattan — and made regular appearances on late-night talk shows, for Ed Sullivan and, starting in the 1980s, on Howard Stern’s radio program.

Paul Herman, the character actor best known for his role as club owner Peter “Beansie” Gaeta in “The Sopranos,” died Tuesday. His “Sopranos” co-star Michael Imperioli confirmed the news in an Instagram. He was 76. A cause of death has not been announced.

Len Amato, the former President of HBO Films, Miniseries and Cinemax, has been named chief content officer at MasterClass. He will head the content organization and help lead content innovation, strategy and development of class launches for the educational streaming platform.

During Amato’s tenure at the helm, HBO Films won the Emmy for Outstanding Made For Television Movie five times in six years from 2009-15. The Liberace pic Behind the Candelabra was its most-honored program, with 11 wins and 15 nominations at the 2013 Emmys.

Before becoming president, Amato — who left HBO a year ago — served as HBO program executive and executive producer on 2008’s multiple Emmy-winning film Recount. The film began Amato’s association with director Jay Roach and writer Danny Strong who would later repeat their creative collaboration on Game Change.

Amato joined HBO in March 2007 as SVP HBO Films.

FX has ordered a new comedy pilot from Peter Tolan, Variety has learned exclusively.

Titled “Belated,” the half-hour project is about an unexpected intergenerational friendship between Owen, a recently out man in his 40s, and Clay, a 17-year-old trans teen, as Owen and his ex-wife and children attempt to find their new normal. Tolan will write, direct, and executive produce the pilot via The Cloudland Company. Nick Alford of Cloudland will also executive produce. FX Productions will produce.

The pilot brings Tolan back into the FX fold. He previously co-created the hit FX series “Rescue Me” with Denis Leary. The show, in which Leary also starred as New York firefighter Tommy Gavin, ran for seven seasons and 93 episodes at the cabler. Tolan received three Emmy nominations for his work on the series, including one for directing the pilot.

Finance firm Orogen Entertainment is partnering with sales agency The Exchange to create a stand-alone development and movie production company Next Prods., which has a slate of projects in development.

The partnership, which will have a three-year term, will develop at least 15 film projects. It will be headed by Caddy Vanasirikul of The Exchange.

Among the projects in development are “The Independent,” with a screenplay by Evan Parter (Amazon’s untitled Chris Pine Watergate project), and to be directed by Amy Rice (“By the People: The Election of Barack Obama”). It is being produced with Anonymous Content and Park Pictures.

Also on the slate is “Middle Man,” being written by Peter Steinfeld, and produced with Red Hour, Votiv Films and Needle’s Eye Prods.

HBO Max is serving up a lot of great new movies this October. Fittingly for the spooky season, the Warner Bros. streaming service is adding a fair few classic horrors to its library next month, but there’s really something for everyone going up – from comedies to romances to sci-fi to superhero films.

Speaking of that last genre, DC lovers will be pleased to note that 2013’s Man of Steel, the movie that kicked off the Dceu, is among the titles arriving on October 1st. Len Amato, President of HBO Films, Miniseries and Cinemax, is leaving the premium cable network after thirteen years.

His exit comes amid a wave of layoffs across HBO parent WarnerMedia, which has impacted a number of veteran, high-level executives. It also continues a consolidation on the longform side at HBO over the past 18 months as that part of the TV business has been evolving.

Longtime HBO Films President Amato added miniseries and Cinemax oversight in April 2019 when 25-year HBO veteran Kary Antholis stepped down as President, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming.

At the time, Cinemax already had started to wind down original programming, a process that is now in its final stages. On the film side, HBO has been moving away from original productions, like the Emmy-winning Recount and The Normal Heart toward acquisitions, like this year’s Emmy hopeful Bad Education.

The half-hour project hails from writers and executive producers Whitney Cummings and Lee Daniels. It centers on three generations of women working in the Ombusdmans office of a college navigate the current cultural climate, the concept of feminism across different generations, and the struggle to reconcile socially constructed ideas with current ethical views regarding complex issues such as sex, race, class, and gender.

Kudrow will play Lynn Steele, The University Ombudsman. She is described as a tired, mercurial force of nature who finds herself being seen as out of touch by millennials, even though she has been a champion of women her entire career.

Vinny Vella, known for his roles in the 1995 film Casino and HBO’s The Sopranos, among others, has died. His family shared the news on Vella’s Facebook page. Vella died Wednesday from liver cancer. He was 72.

“We are saddened to report that Vinny Vella has passed and I’m sure that no one more saddened than himself,” the Facebook statement read. “Vinny loved life from his family to his friends and fans he was easily one of the funniest, endearing actors to have ever graced the screen. Vinny also had integrity and pride rarely seen.”

Hulu has confirmed that several of its original series will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in August, including more installments in the first season of the critically acclaimed Stephen King thriller “Castle Rock” as well as more of season 2 of the costume drama “Harlots” and season 4 of the comedy “Casual.” And there will also be new to Hulu seasons of some of your favorites from other networks, including season 3 of “Insecure” and season 4 of “Ballers.”

Likewise, there will be plenty of movies making their first Hulu appearances including the Oscar-winning “Leaving Las Vegas” and “Lost in Translation” and the recent nominee “Baby Driver.”

Hulu is ringing in the summer with plenty of new titles to keep you occupied during your air conditioned TV binges next month.

The Stephen King multiverse series “Castle Rock” finally makes its debut on July 25, and the final season of Hulu’s original series “Casual” will land on July 31.

Meanwhile, the second season of Hulu’s “Harlots” premieres on July 11, and Season 4 of “You’re the Worst” is available on July 6. The third season of Lifetime’s “UnReal” is available on July 2.

While some of the biggest writers in Hollywood typically populate the best original screenplay and best adapted screenplay categories, it’s not uncommon for Broadway vets to pop up as well. This year is no different as some folks from the Great White Way are up for the biggest honor in Tinseltown: a golden Oscar statuette. Let’s take a closer look at these great talents, shall we?

All of the playwrights we’ll be looking at in this story are considered frontrunners in the 2017 Oscars race by this site’s namesake, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, in his most recent evaluation of the landscape. The first is Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea) in the best original screenplay category with August Wilson (Fences) and Robert Schenkkan (Hacksaw Ridge) sitting atop the best adapted screenplay category.

It’s almost October and that means Netflix is about to refresh their content with some new titles and by removing some others. Some of the notable titles leaving include: The Big Lebowski and A Nightmare on Elm Street. So if you haven’t seen some of these titles, plan your nights accordingly. We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in October 2018.

You may or may have not noticed it but HBO's horror options have gotten pretty grim. Not grim as in scary but grim as in incredibly sparse.

Thankfully the cavalry is arriving in HBO New Releases for October 2018. This is a company that wisely realizes the importance of scary movies around Halloween time. 18 scary movies are coming to HBO Now and HBO Go streams this October. Cool! The catch is that they'll all be gone by month's end. Not cool! Oh well, it's better than nothing. The Descent will also be arriving at the beginning of the month for a much longer stay.

The Writers Guild of America, West has chosen late screenwriter-director-actor-producer Harold Ramis to receive its Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, awarded to a Writers Guild member who has advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter. Erica Mann Ramis and family will accept the award on Ramis’ behalf at the Writers Guild Awards ceremony on Saturday, February 14. Harold Ramis passed away on February 24, 2014 at the age of 69. Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin are slated to star together on Broadway in Kenneth Lonergan’s play This Is Our Youth, a comedy about the high times and aimless lives of two disaffected young men.

Lonergan said Tuesday that Cera, whose credits include Arrested Development, Juno and Superbad, and Culkin, of Igby Goes Down and Cider House Rules, will bring the play to Broadway in the fall after a stop this summer at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Billy Crystal is coming back to the small screen, and not just via his upcoming HBO special. Crystal's new comedy pilot, "The Comedians," has received a series order from FX, according to Deadline. The premise finds Crystal's veteran comic character teaming up with Josh Gad's young up-and-comer for a sketch show. The pilot was written and directed by Larry Charles ("The Dictator," "Curb Your Enthusiasm"), who also serves as the show's executive producer along with Crystal, Matt Nix ("Burn Notice") and Ben Wexler ("Community"). Based off the Swedish series "Ulveson and Herngren," "The Comedians" is a half-hour, single camera comedy that will certainly bring in an older demographic than FX usually attracts with shows like "Archer" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." The writer, director and actor Harold Ramis, who has died aged 69 from complications of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, was responsible for one masterpiece and several influential smash-hits. In each of his creative capacities, he was the eternal quiet man. In front of the camera, his blithe and undemanding presence often disguised his comic skill or made it appear effortless; he seemed happy to hang back and surrender the limelight to more demonstrative and dynamic collaborators, such as his Ghostbusters co-stars Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. In his writing and directing he was adept at capitalising on an audience's love of coarseness without resorting to cruelty or sacrificing his compassion.

Harold Ramis passed away today at the age of 69.

The veteran director and actor was known for films including Groundhog Day, Caddyshack, Analyze This and Analyze That, all four of which he wrote and directed, and notably for his role as Dr Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters.

Following the news, tributes have poured in from Ramis's friends and colleagues across Hollywood.

The actor, writer and director Harold Ramis, star of Ghostbusters, has died at the age of 69 from complications of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis.

Ramis played Dr Egon Spengler, collector of spores, molds and fungus, in Ghostbusters, which he also co-wrote. His other credits as screenwriter include Groundhog Day, Caddyshack, Animal House and Analyze That. He also produced and directed several films, and even recorded songs for film soundtracks.

Starting out in Chicago, he spent time as a teacher and mental health worker, writing plays on the side before securing a job as a joke writer at Playboy. He went on to join the likes of Bill Murray, John Belushi and Christopher Guest on the National Lampoon radio show and revue before moving into film.

Ramis first became ill four years ago with the rare condition, in which the body's own immune system attacks blood vessels, causing inflammation that can.

It was announced today that Grindstone Entertainment has acquired North American rights in all media to the gritty thriller Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn (formally titled Goat) and will be released by Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
